Rockford Fosgate Punch DVC Woofer Installation and Owner's Manual
Model Series: RFP-1208, RFP-1210, RFP-1212, RFP-1215
Introduction
Congratulations on your purchase of Rockford Fosgate car audio speakers. Rockford Fosgate is dedicated to musical reproduction and has engineered products that deliver clarity and richness. For optimal performance, professional installation by an Authorized Rockford Fosgate Dealer is recommended. Please retain your receipt and original packaging for warranty purposes.
This manual is designed for the owner, salesperson, and installer, providing comprehensive information for installation and use.
PRACTICE SAFE SOUND™: Continuous exposure to sound pressure levels over 100dB can cause permanent hearing loss. High-powered autosound systems can produce levels over 130dB. Use common sense and practice safe sound.
For assistance, please have your serial number, model number, and date of purchase ready when contacting Rockford Fosgate at 1-800-795-2385.

Getting Started
This manual provides information for owners, salespeople, and installers. For quick installation guidance, refer to the Installation Section. Other information can be found using the Table of Contents. Rockford Fosgate continuously strives to improve its products, and information in this manual is subject to change without notice.
INSTALLATION sections include assembly and wiring directions.
Technical Design Features
- Stamped Basket: Constructed from rigid, lightweight, cold-rolled steel with a corrosion-resistant powder coat finish, ensuring durability in automotive applications. Result: A lightweight and rigid woofer.
- PVA Cone: Made from spruce pulp paper treated with a water-resistant PolyVinyl Acetate (PVA) Emulsion. This enhances cone rigidity and reduces distortion. Result: Increases cone rigidity and lowers distortion.
- Santoprene Rubber Surround: Resilient to temperature variations, providing consistent support for linear cone motion and damping sonic disturbances for improved frequency response. Result: Improves speaker's frequency response.
- Flat Spider: Features a proprietary flat spider design for balanced linear compliance and symmetrical voice coil control during excursion, reducing mechanical distortion for better sound quality. Result: Reduces mechanical distortion for better sound quality.
- Powder Coat Finish: An industry-standard durable finish applied electrostatically and baked on, providing a hard, shell-like surface. It is an environmentally friendly process with no toxic chemical release. Result: A durable and "earth friendly" metal finish.
- Inverted Dust Cap: Increases cone rigidity and improves power handling by forcing more air through the voice coil. Result: Increases cone rigidity, smooths frequency response, and prevents distortion.
- Aluminum Voice Coil Former: Features a black, anodized aluminum former for efficient thermal transfer, allowing high-temperature copper wire winding for improved efficiency. Result: Improves power handling by efficiently dissipating heat.
- Hyper-Extended Pole Piece: Provides a more linear magnetic field for the woofer, reducing distortion and improving low-frequency response. Result: Lowers distortion and provides better low frequency response.
- Vented Bumped Back Plate: Stepped deeper to allow greater excursion without bottoming out, enabling use in smaller enclosures. Vented with a radiused aerodynamic back vent for quiet, efficient cooling of the voice coil. Result: More excursion and increased power handling.
- Dual Voice Coils: Allows for various impedance loads (e.g., 2Ω single woofer, 4Ω or 1Ω pair of woofers), enabling compatibility with a wide range of amplifiers. Result: Allows multiple wiring configurations.
Installation
Recommended Enclosures
The following are recommended enclosure volumes for the Punch DVC series:
Punch DVC 8"
- Recommended Sealed: 0.30ft³ (8.50L)
- Recommended Ported: 0.625ft³ (17.70L)
8" Ported Enclosure Details: Fb=35Hz, Pd=2.5" (6.35cm), PI=15.25" (38.73cm)
Punch DVC 10"
- Recommended Sealed: 0.625ft³ (17.70L)
- Recommended Ported: 1.0ft³ (28.32L)
10" Ported Enclosure Details: Fb=35Hz, Pd=3" (7.62cm), PI=13.25" (33.65cm)
Punch DVC 12"
- Recommended Sealed: 1.25ft³ (35.40L)
- Recommended Ported: 2.0ft³ (56.63L)
12" Ported Enclosure Details: Fb=30Hz, Pd=2 x 2.5" (2 x 6.35cm), PI=12" (30.48cm)
Punch DVC 15"
- Recommended Sealed: 1.5ft³ (42.47L)
- Recommended Ported: 2.25ft³ (63.71L)
15" Ported Enclosure Details: Fb=30Hz, Pd=2 x 3" (2 x 7.62cm), PI=15.5" (39.37cm)
Key:
Fb = Tuning Frequency
Pd = Inside Port Diameter
PI = Total Port Length
Building an Enclosure
Enclosure walls should be rigid and not flex under pressure. Use 3/4" MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) with internal bracing. Glue, nail, or screw the enclosure together. Seal exterior walls with polyurethane as MDF is porous.
Calculating Volume
Measure dimensions in inches and use the formula:
Box Volume (cubic feet) = (Height x Width x Depth) / 1728
For uneven sides, average the lengths. Subtract the thickness of the baffle material and the volume displaced by the speaker itself from the gross volume calculation to determine the internal volume.
Subwoofer Crossovers
Two types of crossovers exist: passive (coils/inductors between amplifier and speaker) and active (electronic filter separating signals to different amplifiers). For optimal performance, Rockford Fosgate recommends an active 80-100Hz low-pass crossover at 12dB/octave.
Wiring Configurations
Three wiring configurations are available: Series, Parallel, and Series-Parallel. Determine the best method for your amplifier.
Series Wiring
Formula: RT = R1 + R2 + R3 + etc.
Diagram showing two 4Ω speakers wired in series for an 8Ω load.
Parallel Wiring
Formula: 1/RT = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3 + 1/R4 + etc.
Diagram showing two 4Ω speakers wired in parallel for a 2Ω load.
Series/Parallel Wiring
Diagram showing two pairs of 4Ω speakers wired in series/parallel for a 1Ω load (one pair in series, then the pairs in parallel).
Diagram showing two pairs of 4Ω speakers wired in series/parallel for a 4Ω load (two speakers in series, then two more speakers in series, and the two series pairs wired in parallel).
Key:
• RT indicates the total speaker load.
• R1, R2, etc. indicates each speaker in the system.
• Purple dot indicates the “+” terminal of a 4 ohm speaker.
