1 Guide to Using this Manual
This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective operation of your STIHL BG 50 blower. Please read it carefully and keep it in a safe place for future reference.

1.3 Engineering improvements

2 Safety Precautions and Working Techniques
Special safety precautions are mandatory when operating this power tool. Failure to comply with the User Manual can result in serious or fatal injury.
Always observe applicable local safety regulations, including those from trade organizations, social insurance institutions, and labor safety authorities.
If you are a new user, seek guidance from your dealer or an experienced user, or attend a specialist course.
Supervision Requirements:
- Minors must not operate the machine, except for supervised training of individuals over 16 years old.
- Keep children, animals, and bystanders at a safe distance.
- When not in use, store the machine in a secure location inaccessible to unauthorized persons.
User Responsibility:
- The user is responsible for accidents or risks involving third parties or their property.
- Do not lend the machine to unfamiliar users without the manual.
- Be aware of and comply with country-specific regulations regarding noise-emitting power tools.
- Do not use a high-pressure washer to clean the tool, as a solid water jet can damage components.
2.1 Accessories and spare parts
Only use parts and accessories explicitly approved by STIHL or technically identical ones. Consult your dealer if you have questions. Use only high-quality parts and accessories to prevent accidents and damage.
2.2 Physical fitness
Operate the tool only when rested, in good physical and mental condition. Consult a doctor if any condition could be aggravated by strenuous work. Persons with pacemakers should consult their physician and the manufacturer due to the machine's low-intensity electromagnetic field. Do not operate under the influence of alcohol, medication, or drugs.
2.3 Intended Use
The blower is designed for blow-sweeping leaves, grass, paper, and similar materials in gardens, sports stadiums, car parks, and driveways. It is also suitable for blow-sweeping forest paths. Do not use for any other purpose, as this poses an accident risk. Do not operate or store the machine at temperatures below -10°C, as extreme cold can damage components.
2.4 Personal Protective Equipment / Personal Protective Clothing
Wear appropriate protective clothing and equipment. Clothing should be sturdy but allow complete freedom of movement. Wear close-fitting clothes like a boiler suit, not loose jackets. Avoid clothing, scarves, neckties, or jewelry that could enter the air intake. Tie up long hair. Wear sturdy shoes with non-slip soles.
- ⚠️ To prevent eye injuries, wear close-fitting safety glasses compliant with EN 166. Ensure they fit snugly.
- ? Wear personal sound protection, such as ear defenders.
2.5 Transporting the machine
Always stop the engine before transporting. Secure the machine in a vehicle to prevent overturning, damage, and fuel spillage.
2.6 Refueling
Gasoline is highly flammable. Keep it away from open flames, do not spill fuel, and do not smoke. Always shut off the engine before refueling. Never refuel a hot engine, as spilled fuel can ignite. Open the fuel cap slowly to release pressure. Refuel only in a well-ventilated area. Wipe up any spilled fuel immediately. If fuel spills on clothing, change immediately. Never start the engine if there is a fuel leak, as this can cause severe burns. After fueling, tighten the fuel cap securely to prevent it from loosening due to vibrations.
2.7 Before starting
Ensure the power tool is properly assembled and in good condition, referring to relevant chapters. Check the fuel system for leaks, especially the fuel cap, hose connections, and manual fuel pump. Do not start the engine if leaks are present, as this is a fire risk. Have the machine serviced by a dealer before use. Check that the throttle trigger moves freely and springs back to idle. Ensure the stop switch moves easily to '0'. Verify the spark plug boot is secure; a loose boot can cause sparking and ignite fuel vapors. Inspect the blower wheel and housing for damage. Consult a STIHL servicing dealer if any parts are damaged. Never attempt to modify controls or safety devices. Operating the tool when not properly assembled or in good condition increases the risk of accidents and injury.
2.8 Starting the engine
Start the engine at least 3 meters from the fueling spot, outdoors. Operate the tool with one person only and keep others out of the work area. Do not drop-start; follow the manual's procedure. Place the machine on level ground with secure footing and hold it firmly. Be aware that airflow may eject objects like stones once the engine starts.
2.9 While working
- Do not direct the air blast at bystanders or animals, as the machine can eject small objects at high speed, posing an injury risk.
- In case of danger or emergency, switch off the engine immediately by moving the stop switch to '0'.
- Keep other persons at least 5 meters away to reduce the risk of injury from thrown objects.
- Never leave a running machine unattended.
- Exercise caution in slippery, wet, icy, or sloped conditions to prevent slipping.
- Watch for obstacles like tree stumps, roots, and ditches that could cause tripping.
- Do not work on a ladder or in unstable locations.
- Be especially alert when wearing hearing protection, as it can impair your ability to hear warnings.
- Take breaks when feeling tired or fatigued to prevent accidents.
- Work calmly and carefully in daylight with good visibility. Do not endanger others.
- When blow-sweeping outdoors, watch for small animals.
- After use, place the machine on a level, non-flammable surface away from flammable materials (wood chips, bark, dry grass, fuel) to prevent fire.
- The engine produces toxic exhaust fumes (odorless, invisible, may contain unburned hydrocarbons and benzene). Never run the engine indoors or in poorly ventilated locations, even with a catalytic converter.
- Ensure proper ventilation when working in trenches or confined spaces to avoid serious or fatal injury from toxic fumes.
- Stop work immediately if you experience nausea, headaches, impaired vision, hearing, dizziness, or concentration issues, as these could indicate excessive exhaust gas exposure.
- Inhaled dust can be harmful; wear a dust mask if dust is generated.
- Do not smoke while operating or standing near the power tool, as combustible fuel vapor may escape.
- If the machine has been subjected to heavy impact or a fall, check its condition before continuing work, paying particular attention to the fuel system for leaks and the safety equipment for proper function.
- Do not continue operating a damaged machine; contact a dealer if in doubt.
2.10 Using the blower
The blower is designed for one-handed operation. The operator must hold the control handle with their right hand and grip the tool firmly. When blow-sweeping, be mindful of small animals. Work slowly and move forward, always observing the discharge area of the blower tube. Do not move backward, as this can cause tripping. ⚠️ Operate the machine only with the blower tube fully mounted to prevent injury.
2.11 Working Technique
- To minimize blowing time, use a rake and broom to loosen dirt particles first.
- If necessary, dampen the surface to reduce dust.
- Do not blow particles towards bystanders, children, pets, or open windows. Exercise caution in these situations.
- Dispose of blow-swept debris in rubbish bins; do not blow it onto neighboring properties.
- Operate the blower at reasonable times, avoiding early mornings, late nights, or midday rest periods when people might be disturbed. Observe local quiet hours.
- Operate at the lowest engine speed necessary for the task.
- Check the blower before starting, paying attention to the muffler, air intakes, and air filter.
2.12 Vibrations
Prolonged use may lead to circulation problems in the hands (whitefinger disease). Usage duration depends on factors like hand protection, work breaks, personal circulation tendencies, outside temperature, and grip force. Monitor hand and finger condition; seek medical advice if symptoms like tingling sensations appear.
2.13 Maintenance and Repairs
Service the machine regularly. Only perform maintenance described in this manual; other repairs must be done by a servicing dealer. STIHL recommends authorized STIHL servicing dealers for all service and repair work. Use only high-quality or original STIHL replacement parts designed for your model to avoid accidents and damage. Always shut off the engine before maintenance or cleaning, except for carburetor and idle speed adjustments. Do not turn the engine over with the spark plug removed unless the stop switch is in the 'STOP' or '0' position to prevent fire from uncontained sparking.
3 Assembling the Blower
3.1 Mounting the Blower Tube
Diagram shows parts 1 (blower tube), 2 (lug), and 3 (fan housing stub). Push the blower tube (1) with lug (2) into the fan housing stub (3) and rotate it in the direction of the arrow to lock it in position.
3.2 Removing the Blower Tube
Diagram shows parts 3 (fan housing stub) and 6 (tab). Use a suitable tool to lift the tab (6) on the fan housing stub (3). Rotate the blower tube in the direction of the arrow and pull it out.
4 Fuel
The engine requires a mixture of gasoline and engine oil. ⚠️ Avoid direct skin contact with fuel and breathing in gasoline fumes.
4.1 STIHL MotoMix
STIHL recommends STIHL MotoMix, a pre-blended fuel free of benzene and lead, with a high octane rating, ensuring the correct mixing ratio. It uses STIHL HP Ultra two-stroke engine oil for optimal engine life. MotoMix is not available in all markets.
4.2 Mixing fuel
ℹ️ NOTICE: Unsuitable fuels or incorrect mixing ratios can cause severe engine damage. Low-quality gasoline or engine oil can damage the engine, seals, fuel lines, and fuel tank.
4.2.1 Gasoline
Use only high-quality gasoline with an octane rating of at least 90 ROC (leaded or unleaded). Gasoline with an alcohol component exceeding 10% may impair engine performance in engines with manually adjustable carburetors. Engines with M-Tronic can use gasoline with up to 27% alcohol (E27).
4.2.2 Engine oil
If mixing fuel yourself, use only STIHL two-stroke engine oil or another high-performance engine oil classified as JASO FB, JASO FC, JASO FD, ISO-L-EGB, ISO-L-EGC, or ISO-L-EGD. STIHL HP Ultra two-stroke engine oil or an equivalent is specified to maintain emission limits.
4.2.3 Mixing ratio
With STIHL two-stroke engine oil: 1:50 (1 part oil + 50 parts gasoline).
4.2.4 Examples
A table provides examples of gasoline quantity (Liters) and corresponding STIHL two-stroke engine oil (1:50 ratio) in Liters (ml): 1L gas / 0.02L (20ml) oil, 5L gas / 0.10L (100ml) oil, 10L gas / 0.20L (200ml) oil, 15L gas / 0.30L (300ml) oil, 20L gas / 0.40L (400ml) oil, 25L gas / 0.50L (500ml) oil. Pour oil into an approved safety fuel canister first, then add gasoline and mix thoroughly.
4.3 Storing fuel mixture
Store fuel mixture in approved safety fuel canisters in a dry, cool, and secure place, protected from light and sunlight. Fuel mixture deteriorates with age; mix only what is needed for a few weeks. Do not store for longer than 30 days, as it can become unusable faster if exposed to light, sunlight, or temperature fluctuations. STIHL MotoMix can be stored for up to 5 years. Shake the canister thoroughly before refueling. ⚠️ Pressure may build up in the canister; open it carefully. Clean the fuel tank and canister periodically. Dispose of residual fuel and cleaning liquid according to regulations.
5 Fueling
5.1 Preparations
Before fueling, clean the filler cap and the surrounding area to prevent dirt from entering the tank.
5.2 Filling Up with Fuel
Position the machine so the tank cap faces up. STIHL recommends using the STIHL filler nozzle (special accessory). Avoid spilling fuel and do not overfill the tank. Open the cap, fill with fuel, and close the cap securely. ⚠️ After fueling, tighten the filler cap securely by hand.
6 Starting / Stopping the Engine
6.1 Starting the Engine
Observe safety precautions before starting.
If the engine is cold:
Diagram shows choke lever (3) and throttle trigger (2). Move the choke lever (3) to the cold position (symbol ❄️ or similar). Pull the throttle trigger (2) and hold it. Crank the engine until it begins to fire. Move the choke lever (3) to the run position (symbol ☀️ or similar). Pull the throttle trigger (2) and hold it. Continue cranking until the engine runs.
If the engine is warm:
This setting is also used if the engine has been running but is still cold. Move the choke lever (3) to the run position. Pull the throttle trigger (2) and hold it. Continue cranking until the engine runs.
Cranking:
Diagram shows pulling the starter rope. Press the fuel pump bulb at least five times, even if it appears filled. Move the stop switch (1) to the run position (I). Place the unit on the ground securely.
6.2 Stopping the Engine
Move the stop switch to '0'.
6.3 Other Hints on Starting
- 6.3.1 If the engine stops during warm-up or acceleration: Repeat the starting procedure for a cold engine.
- 6.3.2 If engine does not start: Ensure all settings are correct (choke shutter, stop switch in run position). Repeat the starting procedure.
- 6.3.3 If the engine still does not start: Move the stop switch to '0'. Remove and dry the spark plug. Crank the engine several times with the starter to clear the combustion chamber. Refit the spark plug. Move the stop switch to 'I'. Set the choke lever to the cold position, even if the engine is cold. Pull the throttle trigger (2) and hold it. Start the engine. Press the fuel pump bulb at least five times. Set the choke lever according to engine temperature. Start the engine.
- 6.3.4 If fuel tank has been run completely dry and then refueled: Press the fuel pump bulb at least five times. Set the choke lever according to engine temperature. Start the engine.
7 Cleaning the Air Filter
7.1 If there is a noticeable loss of engine power
Diagram shows filter cover (2) and tabs (1). Move the choke lever to the cold position. Squeeze the tabs (1) together. Swing the filter cover (2) open and remove it. Clean loose dirt from around the filter.
8 Adjusting the Carburetor
8.1 General Information
The carburetor is factory-set for optimum fuel-air mixture under most operating conditions.
8.2 Preparations
Shut off the engine. Check and clean or replace the air filter. Check and clean or replace the spark arresting screen in the muffler (if applicable).
8.3 Standard Setting
Diagram shows H and L adjustment screws. Turn the high speed screw (H) counterclockwise as far as stop (no more than 3/4 turn). Turn the low speed screw (L) clockwise as far as stop, then turn it back 3/4 turn.
8.4 Adjusting Idle Speed
Carry out the standard setting. Start and warm up the engine.
8.4.1 Engine stops while idling
Turn the idle speed screw (LA) clockwise until the engine runs smoothly, then back it off 1/4 turn.
8.4.2 Erratic idling behavior, poor acceleration (despite correction to LA screw)
If the idle setting is too lean: Turn the low speed screw (L) carefully counterclockwise, no further than stop, until the engine runs smoothly and accelerates well.
8.4.3 Erratic idling behavior, engine speed drops when swinging the machine
If the idle setting is too rich: Turn the low speed screw (L) slowly clockwise until the engine runs and accelerates smoothly. It is usually necessary to adjust the idle speed screw (LA) after each correction to the low speed screw (L).
8.5 Fine Tuning for Operation at High Altitude
A slight adjustment may be necessary if the engine does not run satisfactorily. Carry out the standard setting and warm up the engine. Turn the high speed screw (H) slightly clockwise (leaner), but no further than stop. ℹ️ NOTICE: If the setting is too lean, there is a risk of engine damage due to insufficient lubrication and overheating. After returning from high altitude, reset the carburetor to the standard setting.
9 Spark Plug
If the engine has low power, starts poorly, or idles rough, check the spark plug first. Fit a new spark plug after approximately 100 operating hours, or sooner if electrodes are badly eroded. Install only suppressed spark plugs of the type approved by STIHL (see Specifications).
9.1 Removing the Spark Plug
Diagram shows spark plug boot (1). Pull off the spark plug boot (1). Unscrew the spark plug.
9.2 Checking the Spark Plug
Clean dirty spark plugs. Check the electrode gap (A) and readjust if necessary (see Specifications). Rectify problems causing spark plug fouling, such as too much oil in the fuel mix, a dirty air filter, or unfavorable running conditions. ⚠️ Arcing may occur if the adapter nut (1) is loose or missing, potentially causing fire or explosion in combustible atmospheres. Use resistor type spark plugs with a properly tightened adapter nut.
9.3 Installing the Spark Plug
Diagram shows spark plug (3) and boot (2). Screw the spark plug (3) into the cylinder and fit the boot (2) firmly.
10 Engine Running Behavior
If engine running behavior is unsatisfactory despite a clean air filter and properly adjusted carburetor, the cause may be the muffler. Have the muffler checked for contamination (carbonization) by your servicing dealer. STIHL recommends authorized STIHL servicing dealers for all service and repair work.
11 Storing the Machine
If the machine is out of use for periods of about 30 days or longer: Drain and clean the fuel tank in a well-ventilated area. Dispose of fuel properly according to local environmental requirements. If a manual fuel pump is fitted, press it at least 5 times. Start the engine and run it at idling speed until it stops. Thoroughly clean the machine, especially the cylinder fins and air filter. Store the machine in a dry and safe location, out of reach of children and unauthorized persons.
12 Maintenance and Care
The following intervals apply to normal operating conditions. Shorten intervals if daily working time is longer or operating conditions are difficult (e.g., very dusty areas).
A table outlines maintenance tasks and intervals:
- Complete machine: Visual inspection (condition, wear, leaks) - before starting, after finishing/daily. Clean - after finishing/daily.
- Control handle: Check operation - before starting, after finishing/daily.
- Air filter: Clean - weekly, monthly. Replace - if damaged.
- Manual fuel pump: Check - before starting. Have repaired by servicing dealer - if damaged.
- Pickup body in fuel tank: Check - monthly. Have replaced by dealer - if damaged.
- Fuel tank: Clean - monthly, every 12 months.
- Carburetor: Check idle setting - after each refueling stop, weekly. Readjust idle - if problem.
- Spark plug: Readjust electrode gap - if problem. Replace after 100 operating hours - as required.
- Cooling inlets: Clean - as required.
- All accessible screws and nuts (not adjusting screws): Retighten - as required.
- Safety labels: Replace - if damaged.

14 Specifications
14.1 Engine
STIHL single cylinder two-stroke engine. Displacement: 27.2 cc. Bore: 34 mm. Stroke: 30 mm. Idle speed: 2,800 rpm.
14.2 Ignition System
Electronic magneto ignition. Spark plug (resistor type): Bosch WSR 6 F, NGK BPMR 7 A. Electrode gap: 0.5 mm.
14.3 Fuel System
All position diaphragm carburetor with integral fuel pump. Fuel tank capacity: 430 cc (0.43 l).
14.4 Blowing performance
Blowing force: 13 N. Air velocity: 60 m/s. Air flow rate: 700 m³/h. Maximum air velocity: 71 m/s.
14.5 Weight
Dry: 3.6 kg.
14.6 Sound and Vibration Levels
Sound and vibration levels are determined at idling and nominal maximum engine speed in a ratio of 1:6. For further details on compliance with Vibration Directive 2002/44/EC, see www.stihl.com/vib.
Sound pressure level Lpeq in accordance with DIN EN 15503 (BG 50): 92 dB(A).
Sound power level Lw in accordance with DIN EN 15503 (BG 50): 105 dB(A).
Vibration level ahv,eq in accordance with DIN EN 15503 (BG 50, Handle, right): 10.5 m/s².
The K-factor for sound pressure and sound power levels is 2.0 dB(A). The K-factor for vibration level is 2.0 m/s².
14.10 REACH
REACH is an EC regulation for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemical substances. For compliance information, see www.stihl.com/reach.
14.11 Exhaust Emissions
The CO2 value measured in EU type approval is specified at www.stihl.com/co2. This value is determined under laboratory conditions and does not guarantee specific engine performance. Exhaust emission requirements are met by intended usage and maintenance as described in this manual. The operating license is void if the engine is modified.
15 Maintenance and Repairs
Users may only perform maintenance and service work described in this user manual. All other repairs must be carried out by a servicing dealer. STIHL recommends authorized STIHL servicing dealers for all work. Use only approved or technically identical replacement parts. Original STIHL parts are identifiable by the STIHL part number, the STIHL logo, and the STIHL parts symbol.
16 Disposal
Contact local authorities or your STIHL servicing dealer for disposal information. Improper disposal can harm health and the environment. ♻️ Take STIHL products and packaging to suitable collection points for recycling according to local regulations. Do not dispose of with domestic waste.
