Bumper Removal
- Open the rear boot and remove boot interior trim. Remove the inner light cluster trim on the outside of the boot shut area to reveal two light cluster fixings. Remove the two fixings along with one inside the boot to remove each light cluster. This will reveal one bumper fixing either side to remove.
- Remove nine fixings along the bumper lower edge and four from each wheel arch. Carefully remove the bumper from the vehicle body, starting at the tips, carefully releasing each clip, then pull rearward.
- Remove the plastic trim fitted to the rear impact beam; this will be refitted later using its original fixings.
- Remove the exhaust bracket from the rear impact beam; support the exhaust to prevent damage.
- Remove the rear impact beam but retain fixings. (This is not refitted with the Towbar assembly).
- Cut the under tray to the pre-marked area. Some models may allow you to snap the pre-cut part to remove.
Towbar Installation
- Using the original fixings X and Items N, fit Item A to the rear panel.
- Using Items G with Items L, attach Items B1 and B2 to Item A (See Fig 1). Rehang the exhaust bracket to Items B1 and B2 using Items G with Items L. (Some models may require the exhaust rubbers inverting before fitment).
- Using Items F with Items K, attach Items C1 or C2 depending on model to Item A on the correct setting (See Fig 2 and Fig 3).
- Fully tighten all fixings, ensuring the Towbar is rigid, square, and secure.
- Using the original fixings, fit the inner plastic bumper support to the support brackets.
- Refit the rear bumper.
- Fix Item D to Item A using Items H with Items M and Item J with Items M, ensuring Item T1 is fitted between the lower mounting point.
- Using Item E, fix your desired ball bracket and wiring plate (not supplied in this kit) to Item D.
- Fully tighten all remaining fixings.
Diagram Descriptions
The main diagram illustrates the towbar assembly components, including the crossmember (A), left and right exhaust brackets (B1, B2), inner bumper support brackets (C1 for 3 & 4 Series, C2 for 5, 6 & 7 Series), and an extension (D). These parts are shown being attached to the rear of a BMW vehicle using various bolts, nuts, and washers. The diagram also indicates areas on the vehicle's under tray that may require cutting.
Figure 1 shows the attachment of the exhaust brackets (B1, B2) to the crossmember (A) using M8 bolts (G) and 8 x 25mm flat washers (L).
Figures 2 and 3 illustrate the mounting of the inner bumper support brackets (C1 for 3 & 4 Series, C2 for 5, 6 & 7 Series) to the crossmember (A) using M6 bolts (F) and 6 x 14mm flat washers (K).
The extension (D) is attached to the crossmember (A) using M12 x 45mm bolts (H) and 12 x 25mm flat washers (M), with a 30mm O/D x 60mm long spacer tube (T1) fitted between the mounting points.
The desired ball bracket and wiring plate (not supplied) are attached to the extension (D) using M16 bolts (E).
Specific diagrams show the shapes of the inner bumper support brackets: Part C1 for 3 & 4 Series, Part C2 for 5 & 6 Series, and a separate illustration for the 7 Series.
