Basic Approach
Mitsubishi Motors recognizes its responsibility as an automaker to promote traffic safety. The company's sustainability efforts include "Delivering products which help prevent traffic accidents." With approximately 1.35 million traffic accident fatalities globally each year, and an increase in vehicle ownership in emerging countries, reducing traffic accidents is a critical global objective. This aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 3.6, which aims to halve global road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. Mitsubishi Motors is committed to a safety philosophy focused on achieving a society with zero traffic accidents, through developing safety technologies and promoting traffic safety education.
Management Structure
Mitsubishi Motors' product development is guided by its safety philosophy and a comprehensive automobile safety framework established by the product safety committee. Key initiatives focus on:
- Technology to help prevent traffic accidents (active safety).
- Technology to mitigate damage from traffic accidents (passive safety).
- Fundamental product safety, addressing hardware and software to avoid dangers.
The company also enhances its safety management structure through R&D personnel education and promoting awareness of its safety philosophy and framework.
Automobile Safety Framework
The framework categorizes safety efforts into Traffic Safety, Accident Prevention, Accident Damage Mitigation, Fundamental Product Safety (Hardware and Software), all contributing to the goal of realizing zero accidents.
Development of Safety Technology
Mitsubishi Motors integrates various safety technologies into its products to ensure customers can drive with peace of mind. The company is actively developing and implementing active safety technologies to preemptively eliminate traffic accidents.
MITSUBISHI MOTORS Safety Sensing [MMSS]
Utilizing millimeter-wave radar and cameras, MMSS helps detect accident risks and mitigate or prevent damage.
Examples of Preventive Safety Features
Function | Description |
---|---|
Forward Collision Mitigation Brake System | Detects vehicles and pedestrians ahead. Alerts the driver or applies brakes to help avoid or mitigate collision damage. |
Forward Collision Prediction Warning | Monitors vehicles ahead, detecting situations difficult for the driver to see and alerting them with an alarm and display. |
Lane Departure Warning System and Lane Departure Prevention Function | Monitors lane markers and alerts the driver if the vehicle deviates from the lane. The prevention function can apply brakes briefly to help keep the vehicle in its lane. |
Adaptive Cruise Control System | Automatically follows the vehicle ahead by adjusting speed, reducing driver burden. |
Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System | Helps prevent unintended acceleration when driving forward or in reverse due to pedal misoperation. |
Automatic High Beam | Automatically switches between low and high beams based on approaching vehicles, ambient light, and other conditions for safer nighttime driving. |
Scope of Support Cars Expanded
Safety Support Cars are vehicles equipped with advanced safety technologies. Mitsubishi Motors is expanding its lineup of "Safety Support Car S Wide Models."
Safety Support Car Models (As of June 2023)
Safety Support Car S Wide Models: OUTLANDER PHEV, ECLIPSE CROSS PHEV, ECLIPSE CROSS gasoline, RVR, DELICA D:5, eK X EV, EK WAGON, Delica Mini, DELICA D:2, TOWN BOX, MINICAB VAN. (Some grades excluded).
Vehicles with Pedal Misapplication Prevention Device: eK WAGON, eK SPACE, DELICA D:5, eK CUSTOM, eK SPACE CUSTOM, DELICA D:5 URBAN GEAR, MIRAGE.
Mitsubishi Motors' forward collision mitigation braking system and pedal misapplication prevention device are certified under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's "Advanced Safety Technology Performance Evaluation Certification System."
Body Structures that "Protect People"
Mitsubishi Motors utilizes the Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body structure to enhance collision safety performance in all directions. This structure is designed to mitigate impact on passengers and provide adequate space. Models like the "OUTLANDER gasoline model" and "OUTLANDER PHEV model" feature a front-to-rear straight frame structure for efficient collision energy absorption. The cabin employs high-tensile-strength steel, including hot-stamped ultrahigh-tensile-strength steel for improved safety and reduced weight. The company also focuses on pedestrian safety by incorporating energy-absorbing structures in areas like the hood, cowl top, windshield wipers, bumper faces, and headlights.
