Using SMARTLINK® DS with SLATE Fuel/Air Ratio Module

Technical Update

Introduction

This document provides instructions for changing the command input setting on the SMARTLINK DS actuator from the default 4-20mA to serial Modbus. This change is essential for proper communication between the SMARTLINK DS actuator and the SLATE Fuel/Air Ratio Module. This update applies to all SMARTLINK DS configurations, including actuator-only, actuator with valve mounting bracket (DSCA), actuator with butterfly valve (DSCV), and actuator with ball valve (DSBV).

Before connecting to the SLATE Fuel/Air module, the command input setting must be changed to serial Modbus, as this is the only communication method compatible with SLATE. Power must be supplied to the unit before making this change. Reference the user manual for power connection details.

The setting change must be performed directly on the actuator and cannot be done through the SLATE user interface. There are two methods:

  • If the SMARTLINK DS unit has an LCD display, the setting can be changed directly from the unit's display.
  • If the SMARTLINK DS unit does not have a display, the change can be made using a laptop with the PC Configuration software, connected via an RS-485 cable. This software also enables full commissioning of the SMARTLINK DS.

To Change Communications Setting via the Display on the Actuator

To make configuration changes via the display, the unit must be in an "unlocked" state and in Manual Mode.

  • The lock function is disabled upon factory shipment, so unlocking is not typically necessary for initial setup. The SMARTLINK DS powers up in Control Mode.
  • If the unit is "locked" after power-up, user commands will be disabled. Consult the instruction manual's "Lock Configuration" section to unlock the unit.
  • Set the mode to Manual via the user display using Menu 2B or 3B, "Change Mode."
  • Navigate to Menu 10, RS-485 Status using the keypad arrow keys (left/right/up/down).
  • Verify that the Modbus settings in field 10 are set to MODBUS, 19.2k-e (19,200 kbaud, even parity). These are the default factory settings and generally do not require modification.

To Change the Command Input Setting from 4-20mA (Default) to Serial Modbus (via Display)

  1. Use the keypad arrow keys to navigate to Menu 3L, "Command Input".
  2. Press the Enter key to change the selection.
  3. Press the down arrow key to select "SERIAL" (Modbus).
  4. Press the Enter key again to save the new selection.
  5. Navigate to Menu 2B or 3B and press the Enter key to switch the mode back to "CONTROL".

To Change the Communications Setting via a Laptop

If the actuator does not have a display, all commissioning functions, including changing the command input setting from 4-20mA to serial (Modbus), can be accessed using a laptop with an RS-485 cable and the PC Configuration software.

  • The PC Configuration software can be downloaded from the SMARTLINK DS product page on the MAXON website: www.maxoncorp.com.
  • Instructions for downloading the software, selecting the appropriate RS-485 interface cable, wiring to the actuator, and accessing the SMARTLINK DS menus are available on the same website.

After establishing Modbus communications:

  1. Place the unit in Manual mode by selecting "Manual" from the "Operating Mode" dropdown menu.
  2. Click the "Commission Valve Actuator" button.
  3. On the left-hand side of the screen, under the "Command Source" box, select "Digital/Modbus command".
  4. Return to the main screen and switch the unit back to Control mode using the "Operating Mode" dropdown menu.
