Baby Trend EZ Flex-Loc Infant Car Seat Owner's Manual
This manual provides essential information for the safe installation and use of your Baby Trend EZ Flex-Loc Infant Car Seat. Please read it completely and store it for future reference.
Warnings to Alert You to Possible Dangers
The ultimate safety of your baby depends on the proper installation of the Safety Seat in your vehicle. Proper installation requires reading and understanding this entire manual and your vehicle's owner's manual. Never allow others to install or use this safety seat unless they completely understand its proper use and installation. Improper use can result in death or serious injury from a crash, sharp turn, or sudden stop.
Your baby's safety requires:
- Choosing the best location within your vehicle for the Safety Seat. Seating positions with Active Air Bags must be avoided.
- Adjusting the harness shoulder strap locations to the appropriate height of your baby.
- Adjusting the harness length to be snug around your baby.
- Using this Safety Seat in the rear-facing position only.
- Ensuring proper use and routing of the vehicle's seat belts for proper installation. Not all vehicle seat belts will adequately secure the Safety Seat.
- Ensuring proper angle of installation for maximum protection.
Safety Information
1) About Your Baby
This Safety Seat is designed and tested for a specific range of HEIGHT and WEIGHT. Using it outside these limits increases the risk of death or serious injury in a crash. Refer to the warning label on the seat and the manual cover for specific limits. Special needs children, such as pre-term babies, may have difficulties with this seat; consult your pediatrician if your baby has special needs or breathing difficulties. Never leave your child unattended. Do not dress your child in bulky clothing that will hinder the harness from being snug and properly latched.
2) About Your Vehicle
Proper installation and securing your child are essential for safety. Quick turns, sudden stops, or crashes can injure your child if not properly secured or if the seat is not properly installed. Vehicle seat belt systems vary; always read your vehicle's owner's manual regarding child restraint installation. Some vehicles may not have a safe location or adequate seat belt systems for this Safety Seat. Never combine this Safety Seat or Base with any other manufacturer's product. This Safety Seat is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft and conforms to applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
3) About Active Air Bags
NEVER PLACE THIS SAFETY SEAT IN A VEHICLE SEATING LOCATION THAT HAS AN ACTIVE AIR BAG.
An inflating active Air Bag can strike the safety seat with great force, causing death or serious injury. Consult your vehicle owner's manual for information on active air bags and supplemental restraints.
4) About an Unoccupied Safety Seat
Never leave the Safety Seat or Base unsecured in your vehicle. An unsecured seat can fly through the vehicle in a crash, causing injury. When not in use, remove the seat/base or secure it with the vehicle's seat belt. The Safety Seat may become very hot in direct sunlight, potentially burning your child. Always check the seat for hot surfaces before placing your child in it. Covering the seat with a blanket or towel when away from the vehicle is suggested.
5) About this Safety Seat
The seat is constructed of plastic that can deform over time. Do not store heavy objects in the seat or in the trunk of your car with pressure on the seat. Replace the Safety Seat and Base after any accident, as undetectable damage can occur. Discontinue use after six (6) years from the date of manufacture. To discard an old seat, disable it by removing the pad and harness and discarding pieces separately.
6) About Use as a Carrier
Never leave your child unattended, even when asleep. Your child can tip or move the carrier. If the carrier tips over, your child can suffocate from the surface or pressure from the harness. If placed too upright, the child's head can fall forward, hindering breathing.
To avoid suffocation, falls, and other hazards:
- Always place the carrier on a firm and level surface. Never place on soft or plush surfaces like beds or sofas, as the carrier can tip over.
- Fall Hazard: Child's movements can slide the carrier. Never place near edges of high surfaces like tables or shelves. Stay within arm's reach.
- Strangulation Hazard: Child can strangle in loose harness straps. Always use the safety harness as instructed.
- Before lifting, check that the carry handle is firmly locked.
- When using with a shopping cart, ensure the seat is firmly locked. If not, place it inside the cart.
- Strings and cords can cause strangulation: Do not place items with strings around a child's neck, do not suspend strings over the carrier, do not attach strings to toys, and keep the carrier away from windows with cords.
NEVER leave child unattended.
Suffocation Hazard: Infant carrier can roll over on soft surfaces and suffocate child; NEVER place carrier on beds, sofas, or other soft surfaces.
Strangulation Hazard: Child can strangle in loose restraint straps. Never leave child in carrier when straps are loose or undone.
Fall Hazard: Child's movement can slide carrier. NEVER place carrier near edges of counter tops, tables, or other elevated surfaces.
Selecting the Best Location for the Safety Seat
Not every location within an automobile is safe. Improper placement increases the risk of death or serious injury. Follow this manual and your vehicle's owner's manual carefully. Contact your vehicle manufacturer if uncertain about the proper location.
1) Overall Considerations in Selecting a Location
- Rear seating positions are statistically safer for children than front positions.
- The center rear seat position is recommended as the safest location. If possible, have an adult ride in the rear to monitor the child.
- If the driver is alone and requires constant monitoring, the forward seating position may be used if there is no passenger side Active Air Bag and specific requirements are met.
2) Check that the Vehicle Seat Meets the Following Requirements
DO NOT place rear-facing child seat on front seat with air bag. DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY can occur. The back seat is the safest place for children 12 and under.
Description of Figure 14-1 & 14-2: These figures illustrate vehicle seating positions. Figure 14-1 shows a rear-facing child seat in a vehicle. Figure 14-2 shows a side-facing child seat in a vehicle, indicating it should not be used.
- Never place this Safety Seat in a vehicle seating location with an Active Air Bag. Active Air Bags inflate with great force and can cause death or serious injury. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for more information.
- DO NOT place this Safety Seat in any vehicle seat that faces to the rear or to either side of the vehicle (refer to Figures 14-1 and 14-2).
- DO NOT use this Safety Seat in a vehicle with a seat back that does not lock into place. A seat back that folds forward must have a latch or locking mechanism to prevent it from flying forward and striking the child in a sudden stop or accident.
- Review your vehicle owner's manual to determine the best location or unsafe locations for safety seat installation. Contact the vehicle manufacturer if the manual does not address child safety seat installation.
3) Check that the Vehicle Seat Belts are Adequate
The Safety Seat must be installed tightly at all times. Vehicle seat belt systems vary, and some may not be safe for use with this Safety Seat. Even newer vehicles can have seat belt systems that appear safe but are not. If unsure, contact your vehicle manufacturer.
Carefully analyze the operation of vehicle safety belts. Being able to thread the belt through the seat is not an indication of safety. Read this section, your vehicle owner's manual, and heed all warning labels. Your vehicle may require a modification or special seat belt.
Seat belt systems that are NOT safe for use with the Safety Seat:
- DO NOT use lap belts that stay loose after installation and only lock in a crash or sudden stop. These often have an Emergency Locking Retractor and may allow the seat to move excessively. (See Figure 16-1).
- DO NOT use lap/shoulder belt systems where the lap belt and shoulder belt each have retractors at one end. This type of system will not adequately restrain the Safety Seat. (See Figure 16-2).
- DO NOT use seat belts connected to the door, as they are designed to surround the occupant automatically when the door closes. This type will NOT adequately restrain the Safety Seat. (See Figure 17-1).
- DO NOT use seat belts anchored more than 2 inches forward of the crease between the seat bottom and seat back. This position anchors the seat too far forward for safe restraint. (See Figure 17-2).
- DO NOT use shoulder belts that move along a track, typically found in systems that surround the occupant when the door closes. This type will NOT adequately restrain the Safety Seat. (See Figure 17-3).
If your vehicle has any of these seat belt systems, DO NOT use them. Consult your vehicle's manufacturer about installing an adequate seat belt system.
Seat belt systems that are Adequate for use with the Safety Seat:
- A manually adjusted lap belt that remains tight during motion is suitable. Pulling the belt through the buckle after fastening tightens it. The center rear seat belt is often this type. (See Figure 18-1).
- A lap belt that cannot be lengthened once fastened is suitable. These belts often have an automatic locking retractor that allows lengthening, but once fastened, must be unbuckled and allowed to retract fully before lengthening again. (See Figure 18-2).
- A lap/shoulder combination seat belt with a latch plate that locks the lap belt into position is suitable. The latch plate prevents loosening and does not require a locking clip. (See Figure 19-1).
- A lap/shoulder combination belt system with a latch plate that slides freely along the belt is suitable if it includes a lockable retractor or if a locking clip is used to secure the lap belt and prevent loosening. Use the provided locking clip as instructed on page 45. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for locking information. This style of belt must be locked to prevent movement. (See Figures 19-2 & 19-3).

- 12.2.10 Secure Straps: Before use, pull harness straps from the front to ensure they are securely re-attached.
13) Adjustment of the Crotch Strap Length
The crotch strap length should allow a gap of 1/2" to 1" between the buckle ears (or EZ5 pad bottom) and the top of the baby's thigh. Check buckle height frequently as the baby grows.
- 13.1 Releasing Clip: Lift the crotch strap pad to see the crotch strap anchor clip in its slot. Pull outward on the metal clip while feeding webbing downward until the clip is removed from the slot. DO NOT attempt to completely remove the crotch strap. (See Figure 35-1).
- 13.2 Adjusting Length: Shorten by wrapping additional strap material around the metal clip. Lengthen by unwrapping material. Adjust to desired length. (See Figure 35-2).
- 13.3 Reinserting Clip: Reinsert the metal clip into the slot while pulling upward on the buckle. Ensure the clip is fully seated. (See Figure 35-3).
Securing Your Child in the Safety Seat / Carrier
Failure to properly secure your child increases the risk of death or serious injury from suffocation or falls, or in the event of a sharp turn, sudden stop or crash.
The safety seat provides no protection unless harness straps are properly installed and adjusted. Check harness fit every time.
- 14.1 Check Straps: Ensure harness straps are in proper slots or adjusted to the correct height as described in Section 12.
- 14.2 Clothing: Dress your child in clothing that allows harness straps to latch securely and keeps shoulder straps properly located.
- 14.3 Positioning: Place the Safety Seat on a firm, level surface. Move carry handle to non-rocking position. Loosen harness straps by pulling while pushing the adjuster button. Unfasten chest clip. Unbuckle harness straps and drape them over the seat back or sides. (See Figure 37-1).
- 14.4 Child Placement: Place your child in the Safety Seat so their bottom is against the back and bottom of the seat. (See Figure 37-2).
- 14.5 Tighten Straps: Pull harness straps down over your child. Check that straps are not twisted.
For the EZ5 Harness:
- 14.6.1 Buckle: Buckle harness straps. Ensure you hear a click. Pull straps to confirm they are securely buckled. If not, the seat will NOT provide protection. Call Baby Trend if harness does not securely buckle.
- 14.6.2 Tighten: Pull outward on the Harness Adjuster Strap to tighten. Ensure both straps are flat and snug on your child's shoulders. A snug strap should not allow slack and should lie in a straight line without sagging. It should not press into the child's flesh or push the body into an unnatural position. (See Figure 38-1).
- 14.6.3 Chest Clip: Fasten Harness Chest Clips together. Position the clip level with the child's armpits by sliding it up or down the harness straps. (See Figure 38-2).
For the 5-Point Harness:
- 14.7.1 Buckle: Put the two buckle tongues together and insert into the harness buckle on the crotch strap. Ensure they click and are firmly latched by pulling upward. If not, the seat will NOT provide protection. Call Baby Trend if harness does not securely buckle. (See Figures 39-1 & 39-2).
- 14.7.2 Tighten: Pull outward on the Harness Adjuster Strap to tighten. Ensure both straps are flat and tight on your child's shoulders. You should not be able to insert more than one finger between the harness strap and your child's shoulder. (See Figure 38-1).
- 14.7.3 Chest Clip: Fasten Harness Chest Clips together. Position the clip level with the child's armpits by sliding it up or down the harness straps. (See Figure 38-2).
Securing the Safety Seat or Base in the Vehicle
Accessory products are acceptable if they do not interfere with harness assembly or proper adjustment. Thick, soft materials (over 1/4 inch) should not be placed behind or under the child, or between the child and harness straps.
Please read Section 3 (Check Vehicle Seat Belt Safety) before proceeding. Due to the variety of vehicles and belt systems, this section provides guidance. Combine this with your vehicle manufacturer's information for proper installation.
Failure to properly install and secure the Safety Seat in a rear-facing position increases the risk of death or serious injury. Follow these instructions and your vehicle manufacturer's instructions carefully.
15.1 Preparation
- 15.1.1 Level Surface: Park on a level surface to ensure the level indicator shows the proper recline angle.
- 15.1.2 Location: Ensure you have selected an acceptable location as instructed in Section 'Selecting the Best Location for the Safety Seat' (page 12).
- 15.1.3 Active Air Bags: Check again for Active Air bags. DO NOT use locations adjacent to them. Consult your vehicle owner's manual for warnings.
- 15.1.4 Front Seat Use: If using the front seat, slide the vehicle seat as far back as possible to prevent the safety seat from striking the dash. If using the rear seat, slide the vehicle seat forward enough to prevent the safety seat from striking the seat back.
- 15.1.5 Seat Back Lock: Check that the vehicle seat back is locked in the upright position and will not fold forward onto the Safety Seat. (See Figure 42-1).
15.2 Installation of the Safety Seat / Vehicle Belt Installation of Base

- Locking Buckle: Pull upward on the shoulder portion while pushing down on the seat. If difficult, unbuckle, tighten slightly, re-buckle, and repeat until very tight. (See Figure 45-1).
- Sliding Latch Plate: May require a locking clip. Check your vehicle's manual. To install clip, tighten belt by pulling shoulder portion up while pushing down. Squeeze shoulder belt and lap belt together above the buckle to prevent movement. Unbuckle belt carefully. Secure shoulder belt to lap belt with locking clip 1/2 inch from buckle. (See Figure 46-1). Re-buckle and check tightness.
- 15.2.9 Base Latching: If using the Base, ensure nothing interferes with latching. Place Safety Seat onto Base and push down until it latches securely (hear a click). Pull upward to check secure latching. (See Figure 46-2). If it does not latch securely, the seat will NOT provide protection. Call Baby Trend if it does not latch.
15.3 Installation of the Base using LATCH
The LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) System simplifies installation. By September 1, 2002, vehicles are equipped with lower anchor points. Child safety seats have attachments to connect to these points.
- 15.3.1 Locate Position: Find a LATCH seating position per your vehicle owner's manual.
- 15.3.2 Remove Seat: Remove the Safety Seat from the base by squeezing the base release handle and lifting upward.
- 15.3.3 Release Connectors: Rotate retainer and press red release button of LATCH connector to remove from storage. (See Figures 48-1a & 48-1b).
- 15.3.4 Place Base: Place Base in rear-facing position in a forward-facing vehicle seat (See Figure 48-3). Child must face rear.
- 15.3.5 Connect to Anchors: Locate vehicle LATCH anchors (See Figure 48-2). Snap LATCH connectors onto the steel rod. Listen for a click and check both connectors are firmly attached by pulling outward. (See Figure 48-3).
- 15.3.6 Tighten Webbing: LATCH webbing must be very tight. Push down on the Base while pulling upward on each webbing end. Webbing will lock automatically. Check for slack on both sides; the base must be tightly installed. (See Figures 49-1 & 49-2).
- 15.3.7 Remove Base: To remove the base, squeeze the webbing release button on the LATCH connector to loosen webbing. (See Figure 49-3a). Press the LATCH hook release button on each connector to release from the anchor. (See Figure 49-3b).
15.4 Setting Proper Recline of the Safety Seat / Base
Proper recline is crucial for child safety. The Seat Angle Indicator on the lower portion of the shell assists in achieving the correct angle. (See Figure 50-1).
Failure to properly recline the Safety Seat increases the risk of death or serious injury. An upright seat can cause breathing problems; a reclined seat can exert excessive force on the child's shoulders and neck in a crash. Follow instructions carefully.
15.4.1 Safety Seat with Base:
- Ensure the vehicle is parked on level ground.
- Lock the Safety Seat onto the Base and check side-to-side levelness. (See Figure 51-1).
- Check the Seat Angle Indicator for your child's weight.
- If the indicator shows NO red, the seat is at the proper recline.
- If the indicator shows ANY red (too upright or too reclined):
- Too Upright: Extend the foot one position at a time until no red shows. To extend the foot, pull downward on the hand hold (See Figure 51-2) while holding the base.
- Too Reclined: To retract the foot, press inward on the lock button (See Figure 51-3) and push upward on the foot. Be careful not to pinch fingers.
- If the seat angle adjuster feature does not provide proper recline, place a rolled towel or noodle under the base at the foot end. (See Figure 52-1).
15.4.2 Safety Seat without Base:
- Check side-to-side levelness. Check the level indicator (See Figure 50-1).
- If the indicator shows NO red, the seat is at the proper recline.
- If the indicator shows ANY red (too upright or too reclined):
- Too Reclined: Adjust the Safety Seat as shown in Figure 52-2 until no red shows.
- Too Upright: Place a tightly rolled towel or noodle under the foot end until no red shows. (See Figure 52-3). Re-tighten the vehicle seat belt.
Final Safety Checks
- If your child is in the Safety Seat, check that the harness is properly fitted and tight as instructed in 'Securing your Child in the Safety Seat / Carrier'.
- Ensure the Safety Seat is tightly installed and secure. Firmly push down and side-to-side on the head end. The vehicle seat belt should not loosen and must be fastened very tightly around the Safety Seat/Base. If the belt loosens or the seat moves easily, re-evaluate the location and installation steps. DO NOT use this seating location if the Safety Seat does not remain tightly installed.
- Place the handle in the mid-storage or non-rocking position after installing in the vehicle.
Using the Safety Seat in an Airplane
The Safety Seat can be used without the Base on an airplane, typically in a forward-facing airplane seat. Check with the airline for policies. Follow installation instructions and perform Final Safety Checks.
