Important Safety Information & Warnings
WARNINGS TO ALERT YOU TO POSSIBLE DANGERS
The ultimate safety of your baby depends on the proper installation of the Safety Seat in your vehicle. Proper installation requires reading and understanding this entire manual and your vehicle's owner's manual before placing your baby in the Safety Seat. Do not allow others to install or use this safety seat unless they completely understand its proper use and installation. Improper use can result in death or serious injury from a crash, sharp turn, or sudden stop.
Your baby's safety requires:
- Choosing the best location within your vehicle for the Safety Seat. Seating positions with Active Air Bags must be avoided.
- Adjusting the harness shoulder strap locations to the appropriate height of your baby.
- Adjusting the harness length to be snug around your baby.
- Using this Safety Seat in the rear-facing position only.
- Proper use and routing of the seat belts in your vehicle is essential for proper installation. Not all vehicle seat belts will adequately secure the Safety Seat.
- Proper angle of installation is required for maximum protection of your baby.
SAFETY INFORMATION
1) About Your Baby
This Safety Seat is designed and tested for a specific range of HEIGHT and WEIGHT. Using it outside these limits increases the risk of death or serious injury in a crash. Refer to the warning label on the Safety Seat and this manual for limits. Special needs children, such as pre-term babies, may have difficulties. The recline angle may not be appropriate for them. Consult your pediatrician for advice. Never leave your child unattended. Do not dress your child in bulky clothing that hinders the harness from being snug and properly latched.
2) About Your Vehicle
Proper installation and securing your child are essential. Understand your vehicle's owner's manual regarding child restraint installation. Not all vehicles or seat belt systems are compatible. Some vehicles may not have a safe location or adequate seat belt systems. Never combine this Safety Seat or Base with any other manufacturer's product. This Safety Seat is certified for use in Motor Vehicles and Aircraft and conforms to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
3) About Active Air Bags
NEVER PLACE THIS SAFETY SEAT IN A VEHICLE SEATING LOCATION THAT HAS AN ACTIVE AIR BAG. An inflating Air Bag can cause death or serious injury. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for more information.
4) About an Unoccupied Safety Seat
Never leave the Safety Seat or Base unsecured in your vehicle; it can become a projectile in a crash. When not in use, remove it or secure it. The Safety Seat can become very hot in direct sunlight; always check for hot surfaces before placing your child in it. Cover the seat with a blanket or towel if exposed to direct sunlight. Replace the Safety Seat and Base after any accident, even minor ones, as damage may not be visible. Discontinue use after six (6) years from the date of manufacture; disable it before discarding.
5) About this Safety Seat
The seat is constructed of plastic that can deform over time if left with objects or pressure. Do not store the seat in a car trunk with heavy objects on it. Do not use the safety seat if it is damaged or broken.
6) About Use as a Carrier
Never leave your child unattended, even when asleep. Your child can tip or move the carrier, potentially leading to suffocation or injury. Always place the carrier on a firm, level surface, not on soft or plush surfaces like beds or sofas, as it can tip easily. Keep the carrier away from edges of high surfaces like tables or shelves. Ensure harness straps are snug. Before lifting, check that the handle is firmly locked. When using with a shopping cart, ensure the seat is firmly locked onto the cart or place it inside the cart. Strings and cords can cause strangulation; keep them away from the child's neck and body.
WARNING: NEVER leave child unattended. Suffocation Hazard: Infant carrier can roll over on soft surfaces and suffocate child. NEVER place carrier on beds, sofas, or other soft surfaces. Strangulation Hazard: Child can strangle in loose restraint straps. Never leave child in carrier when straps are loose or undone. Fall Hazard: Child's movement can slide carrier. NEVER place carrier near edges of counter tops, tables, or other elevated surfaces.
Selecting the Best Location for the Safety Seat
Not every location in an automobile is safe. Improper placement increases the risk of death or serious injury. Follow this manual and your vehicle's owner's manual. Contact your vehicle manufacturer if uncertain.
1) Overall Considerations
Rear seating positions are statistically safer. The center rear seat is recommended. If the driver is alone and requires constant monitoring, the front seat may be used if there is no passenger-side Active Air Bag and specific requirements are met.
2) Check Vehicle Seat Requirements
WARNING: DO NOT place a rear-facing child seat on the front seat with an air bag. DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY can occur. The back seat is the safest place for children 12 and under.
Diagram Description (Fig. 14-1 & 14-2): Illustrates a vehicle interior, showing a rear seat as the recommended location for a child safety seat. It also depicts a front seat with an airbag, highlighting it as an unsafe location for a rear-facing seat.
2.1) Active Air Bags: NEVER place the Safety Seat in a location with an Active Air Bag. An inflating airbag can cause death or serious injury. Refer to your vehicle manual.
2.2) Vehicle Seat Direction: DO NOT place the Safety Seat in any vehicle seat that faces to the rear or to either side.
2.3) Seat Back Stability: DO NOT use a vehicle seat with a back that does not lock into place. A folding seat back must have a latch or locking mechanism to prevent it from flying forward and striking the child.
2.4) Vehicle Manual Review: Review your vehicle owner's manual to determine the best and safest locations for installation. Contact the manufacturer if the manual does not provide this information.
3) Check Vehicle Seat Belt Compatibility
The Safety Seat must be installed tightly. Not all vehicle seat belt systems are safe for use with this Safety Seat. Consult your vehicle owner's manual and heed all warning labels. Your vehicle may require modification or a special seat belt.
WARNING: Carefully analyze vehicle safety belt operation. The ability to thread the belt through the seat is not an indication of safety. Review seat belt systems, your vehicle manual, and warning labels. Modifications or special seat belts may be required.
3.2) Seat Belt Systems NOT Safe for Use:
- 3.2.1) Loose Lap Belts: Do not use lap belts that stay loose and only lock in a crash or sudden stop (Emergency Locking Retractor). These allow the seat to move. Consult your dealer for conversion options.
- 3.2.2) Lap/Shoulder Belts with Separate Retractors: Do not use systems where the lap and shoulder belts each have retractors at one end, as they will not adequately restrain the seat.
- 3.2.3) Door-Connected Seat Belts: Do not use seat belts connected to the door, as they are designed to automatically surround the occupant and will not adequately restrain the Safety Seat.
- 3.2.4) Forward-Anchored Seat Belts: Do not use seat belts anchored more than 2 inches forward of the seat bottom/back crease, as this anchors the seat too far forward.
- 3.2.5) Track-Mounted Shoulder Belts: Do not use shoulder belts that move along a track, as they typically move to surround the occupant and will not adequately restrain the seat.
Diagram Description (Fig. 16-1, 16-2, 17-1, 17-2, 17-3): These diagrams illustrate various unsafe seat belt configurations. Fig. 16-1 shows a loose lap belt with an emergency locking retractor. Fig. 17-3 shows a shoulder belt on a track.
3.3) Seat Belt Systems Adequate for Use:
- 3.3.1) Manually Adjusted Lap Belt: A lap belt that is manually adjusted and remains tight is suitable. The center rear seat belt is often this type.
- 3.3.2) Non-Lengthening Lap Belt: A lap belt that cannot be lengthened once fastened, often with an automatic locking retractor that requires unbuckling to lengthen, is suitable.
- 3.3.3) Lap/Shoulder Combination with Latch Plate: A system with a latch plate that locks the lap belt into position is suitable and does not require a locking clip.
- 3.3.4) Lap/Shoulder Combination with Sliding Latch Plate: Suitable if it includes a lockable retractor or if a locking clip is used to secure the lap belt. Use the provided locking clip as instructed.
Diagram Description (Fig. 18-1, 18-2, 19-1, 19-2, 19-3): These diagrams illustrate safe seat belt configurations. Fig. 18-1 shows a manually adjusted lap belt.
