Hurricane Rated Device Requirements
For hurricane rated exit device requirements (when used with approved Allegion door applications):
- Sexbolts: Must be used for Wind and Impact-rated hurricane devices (HH). If through-bolting trims are used, they are equivalent in function and used in place of sex bolts.
Application | Device Model | Top Strike | Mullion | Double Door Standard Strike |
---|---|---|---|---|

Device Installation
Step 1: Prepare door for latch mounting brackets.
Drill top and bottom of door for latch cases.
Step 2: Place paper device template on door and prepare door.
For wood doors, refer to pages 13 & 14 for special door preparation instructions.
Step 3: Drill ratchet release hole in door.
Refer to the following dimensions for stop height:
- 11/16" for 1/2" Stop height
- 13/16" for 5/8" Stop height
- 15/16" for 3/4" Stop height
Step 4: Draw horizontal and vertical device center lines (CL).
See "Backset information" on page 9. Ensure the door has a 1/4" undercut (gap) at the bottom to the finished floor once hung.
Step 5: Prepare mounting holes and cut-outs per template.
Templates for metal doors are on pages 11 & 12. Templates for wood doors are on pages 15 & 16.
For HH / Fire device (metal door) and Panic device (metal and wood door), drill and tap #10-24 (metal door) or use 1/8" pilot drill (wood door).
Drill a 1/2" diameter hole on the inside face of the door for the latch.
Step 6: Measure to determine length to cut device.
Ensure a minimum clearance of 1-3/16" is maintained.
Note: If a 5/8" diameter wire access hole has been predrilled in the door, cut the device 5/16" from the center of the hole.
Step 7: Cut device square.
Ensure the device is cut square for proper end cap fit. Remove all burrs after cutting. Remove anti-rattle clip while cutting.
Step 8: Install rods as shown.
Rods are shipped with L-brackets attached. Insert rods with the L-bracket pointing toward the lock stile. Rotate the rod until the L-bracket protrudes through the door cutout. If this is not possible, remove the L-bracket, re-insert the rod, and re-attach the L-brackets.
Note: Fire/HH devices on metal doors use brackets on both sides of latches.
CAUTION: L-brackets must be installed in the orientation shown.
Step 9: Attach rods to Center Case.
Measure top and bottom lengths, subtracting 1-9/16" from each to determine the required rod length. Fine-tune the total length by threading latches in or out of rods.
Note: If a 5/8" diameter wire access hole has been predrilled in the door, cut the device 5/16" from the center of the hole.
Step 10: Install rods as shown.
Attach L-brackets to the rods. Install adjusting screws (G) and retainers, then secure with locking screws (H).
For top latch & rod and bottom latch & rod, ensure brackets are installed correctly. Shims may be used if required for alignment.
Step 11: Install top strike and ratchet release.
Refer to "Frame Preparation" on page 7 for cut-out and holes. Ensure the roller side of the strike is positioned correctly. For ratchet release, use a shim if needed and a spacer when the frame has no door stop.
Step 12: Secure device to door and mount door to frame.
Use #325 Sex bolts or trim (A) to secure the device. Ensure the device is an equal height to the bottom of the door on each end. Mark and prepare 2 mounting bracket holes. Use 1/4" drill inside and 13/32" drill outside.
Step 13: Install bottom strike or prepare threshold.
The 385-A bottom strike has two pieces. Grout the bottom piece into the floor and attach the top piece to the bottom with a screw through the slot.
For flat threshold applications, remove material as necessary to accommodate the 5/8" latch bolt throw. Note: Thresholds are not to be used with 33/3547A-F.
Hurricane applications use a threshold with a 304L bottom strike, grouted into the floor.
Adjust Rods
- Open the door and release the top latch bolt as shown (Figure 1).
- Remove the bottom locking screw and retaining clip (Figure 2).
- Disconnect the bottom vertical rod by removing the bottom adjusting screw.
- Loosen the top locking screw.
- Rotate the top adjusting screw clockwise until the top latch bolt is fully extended (Figure 1).
- Check the top latch bolt for deadlocking (it should not push in).
- Turn the top locking screw in against the flat on the adjusting screw. Do not over-tighten.
- Depress the pushbar and release.
- Ensure the top latch bolt remains retracted as shown (Figure 3).
- Install the bottom adjusting screw through the bottom rod and install the bottom retaining clip and locking screw (Figure 2).
- With the top latch bolt still retracted, adjust the bottom rod so the latch bolt clears the floor and bottom strike (Figure 4).
- Close the door and check the bottom latch bolt for deadlocking.
- After the bottom rod is fully adjusted per steps 11 and 12, turn the bottom locking screw in against the flat on the adjusting screw. Do not over-tighten.
- Check device operation by opening and closing the door several times from the outside.
Redo the adjustment procedure if:
- The top latchbolt is not held retracted.
- The bottom latchbolt does not clear the floor and bottom strike.
Finally, install the end cap and center case covers (C, K).
Frame Preparation
338 Top Strike
For double door applications, ensure the strike, latch bolt, and device are aligned correctly for both RHR and LHR doors. Maintain specified clearances and dimensions.
Ratchet Release
Ensure the plunger goes through the hole in the door and is adjusted so the plunger releases the latch bolt. Reinforcing may be required.
Optional Equipment
CD (Cylinder Dogging)
- Remove the mortise cylinder cam and reinstall it in reverse (Figure 1).
- Insert the key and rotate the cam to install the cylinder to the cover plate (Figure 2).
- Remove the key to slide the cover plate into position in the mechanism case.
Backset Information
Backset is measured from the outer edge of the door. The minimum stile is less than the glass stop. Rectangular glass stop is recommended for Stiles less than 2-1/8".
Special Instructions for 2" Stile Doors: For 2" stile doors ONLY, the latch CL is offset 1/8" from the Device CL as shown.
Door type | Backset | Min. stile | Application |
---|---|---|---|
Wood | 1-5/16" | NA | All |
Metal | 1-1/2" | 2-3/4" - 3-3/4" | Two vertical rod devices (panic) |
1-7/8" | 3-3/4" - 5" | Single door (panic) | |
1-1/2" | 2-1/2" - 3-3/4" | Single door (panic) | |
1-7/8" | 3-3/4" - 5" | Single door (panic) | |
2-3/4" | 3-5/8" to flush | Fire and Hurricane applications |
