Important Safeguards

When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed, including the following:

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS.

Safety Features

Polarized Plug (120V models only)

This appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). To reduce the risk of electric shock, this plug is intended to fit into a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully into the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician. Do not attempt to modify the plug in any way.

Tamper-Resistant Screw

Warning: This appliance is equipped with a tamper-resistant screw to prevent removal of the outer cover. To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not attempt to remove the outer cover. There are no user-serviceable parts inside. Repair should be done only by authorized service personnel.

Electrical Cord

  1. A short power-supply cord is provided to reduce the risk resulting from becoming entangled in or tripping over a longer cord.
  2. Extension cords may be used if care is exercised in their use.
  3. If a long detachable extension cord is used:
    • The marked electrical rating of the power cord or extension cord should be at least as great as the electrical rating of the appliance.
    • If the appliance is of the grounded type, the extension cord should be a grounding-type 3-wire cord.
    • The cord should be arranged so that it will not drape over the countertop or tabletop where it can be pulled on by children or tripped over.

Note: This appliance has important markings on the plug blade. The attachment plug or entire cord set (if the plug is molded onto the cord) is not suitable for replacement. If damaged, the appliance shall be replaced.

Getting to Know Your Coffee Maker

Diagram Description: The coffee maker is depicted from the front-left. It is a black appliance with a carafe on a warming plate. The lid is open, revealing the brew basket. A water reservoir is visible on the right side with level markings. The control panel is located on the front base.

Product may vary slightly from what is illustrated.

Instructions for Use

Getting Started

  1. Remove all packing material, any stickers, and the plastic band around the power plug.
  2. Please go to www.prodprotect.com/powerxl to register your warranty.
  3. Wash any removable parts as instructed in the “Care and Cleaning” section.
  4. Clean the inside of your appliance by running two full brewing cycles with water only (no coffee).
    • Pour fresh, cold water into the Water Reservoir up to the 10-cup mark. Then, place the Carafe on the Carafe Plate:
    • Plug the power cord into a standard electrical outlet.
    • Push the Brew Button to immediately flush water through the appliance.
    • Once the cycle is finished, discard the water.
    • Turn off the appliance, unplug it, and let it cool for 15 minutes before repeating the process.

Programming Your Coffee Maker

Setting the Digital Clock

  1. Plug the appliance into a standard electrical outlet.
  2. The numbers and colon on the digital clock display will flash "12:00."
  3. Press the HR and MIN Buttons until the correct time is shown on the display. The colon will continue to flash even after the time is set.
  4. In the afternoon, the light next to "PM" on the Control Panel's display will illuminate on the display. If the light next to "PM" is not illuminated, the time is set to AM.
  5. To change the time after it has been set, press either the HR or MIN Button once to enter the time-setting mode and follow the steps above.

Note: If the appliance is unplugged or power is interrupted even momentarily, the time may need to be reset.

Brewing Hot Coffee

  1. Open the cover. Fill the Water Reservoir with your desired amount of water. The "12" line on the side of the Water Reservoir represents a full carafe of coffee; do not fill past this line.

Note: Use spring water or filtered water. Distilled water lacks the minerals necessary to bind to the elements of coffee. Filtered water will limit impurities and excessive minerals that can detrimentally impact coffee flavor and machine performance.

  2. Insert a basket-type paper filter into the Brew Basket.
  3. Add your desired amount of ground coffee to the filter. Close the Lid, ensuring that it clicks into place.
  4. Ensure that the Carafe's lid is properly attached to the empty Carafe. Close the Carafe's lid.

Note: Coffee may overflow if the Carafe's lid is not placed properly.

  5. Place the empty Carafe on the Carafe Plate.
  6. If the appliance is not already plugged in, plug the power cord into a standard electrical outlet.
  7. If you want to brew strong coffee, press the Strong Button once. The light next to "STRONG” on the Control Panel's display will illuminate. To brew regular-strength coffee again, press the Strong Button again to darken the “STRONG” indicator on the display.

Note: We recommend using the Strong setting to ensure the best flavor whenever brewing 4 cups of coffee or fewer.

  8. Press the Brew Button to begin brewing coffee. The light on the Brew Button will illuminate once pressed. You can cancel the brewing process at any time by pressing the Brew Button again.
  9. The appliance will keep coffee hot for 4 hours before turning off automatically. The light on the Brew Button will remain illuminated while the appliance is keeping your coffee warm.
  10. Once the coffee grounds have cooled, carefully open the Lid and discard the grounds. Afterward, close the Lid.

Sneak-a-Cup Feature

If you remove the Carafe during the brewing process, the brewing process will pause. Return the Carafe to the appliance within 30 seconds to prevent overflow. When the Carafe is returned to the appliance, brewing will resume.

Brew Later Function

If BREW LATER function has not been previously set:

  1. After the appliance's digital clock has been set (see the “Setting the Digital Clock" section), press the Brew Later Button. The light next to “BREW LATER" on the display will illuminate and flash once per second.
  2. The clock on the display will show the previous Brew Later time that was programmed. If a Brew Later time has never been set on the appliance or the appliance has been unplugged since the last time the Brew Later time was set, the Brew Later time defaults to 12:00 АМ.
  3. While the Brew Later time on the display is blinking, use the HR and MIN Buttons to program the Brew Later time.
  4. Press the Brew Later Button again to confirm the Brew Later time. The time will also be confirmed if no buttons are pressed for 4 seconds.
  5. The appliance will begin brewing coffee at the programmed Brew Later time.

If Brew Later function is already set:

  1. Press the Brew Later Button to check the Brew Later time. The clock will flash once per second and display the Brew Later time for 4 seconds. At this point, you may reset the Brew Later setting if desired.
  2. You can press the Brew Later Button to check the programmed Brew Later time. The clock will flash once per second and display the programmed Brew Later time for 4 seconds. While the clock is flashing, you can use the HR and MIN Buttons to adjust the Brew Later time.
  3. To cancel the Brew Later function, press and hold the Brew Later Button for 3 seconds.
  4. After pressing no buttons for 4 seconds, the clock will revert to the current time.

Note: Even when the Brew Later function is not being used, the Brew Later time will still be stored unless the appliance is unplugged.

Brewing Iced Coffee

  1. Open the Lid.
  2. Fill the Water Reservoir. Refer to the table below for the recommended amount of water for your desired number of servings.

Note: Do not fill the Water Reservoir above the "6 MAX ICED” level.

Note: Filtered water will limit impurities and excessive minerals that can detrimentally impact coffee flavor and machine performance.

  3. Insert a basket-type paper filter into the Brew Basket.
  4. Add your desired amount of pre-ground coffee to the Brew Basket. Refer to the table below for the recommended amount of ground coffee. Close the Lid, making sure it clicks.
  5. Make sure the Carafe's lid is properly attached to the empty Carafe.

Note: Coffee may overflow if the Carafe's lid is not placed properly.

  6. If the appliance is not yet plugged in, plug its power cord into a standard electrical outlet.
  7. You can add additional grounds for a stronger coffee or adjust the amount of water provided you do not fill the Water Reservoir above the "6 MAX ICED" level.
  8. Add ice to the desired line in the Carafe. Refer to the table below for recommended amounts of ice cubes.
  9. Place the Carafe on the Carafe Plate.
  10. Press the Iced Coffee Button to begin brewing. The light on the Brew Button will illuminate once the Iced Coffee Button has been pressed. You can cancel the brewing process at any time by pressing the Brew Button.
  11. Once the coffee grounds have cooled, carefully open the Lid and discard the grounds. Afterward, close the Lid.

Note: Unlike the Brew function, when using the Iced Coffee function, the Carafe Plate will not heat up.

Care and Cleaning

This product contains no user-serviceable parts. Refer service to qualified service personnel.

Cleaning

  • Be sure the appliance is unplugged and has cooled.
  • Wash the removable parts in the top rack of the dishwasher or wash by hand in hot water with dish detergent.
  • Wipe the appliance's exterior surface, control panel, and Carafe Plate with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleansers or scouring pads. Never immerse the appliance in water.
  • To clean the inside of the Lid, open the Lid and leave in the open position. Wipe surfaces with a damp cloth.

Auto-Clean System

Descaling with the Auto-Clean function

Over time, calcium deposits or "scale" may build up in your brewer. Scale is nontoxic, but if left unattended, it will hinder brewer performance and cause premature failure. Regularly descaling your brewer helps to maintain coffee quality as well as the lifespan of the heating element and other internal parts that come in contact with water throughout the brew process.

To make the descaling process as effortless as possible, an Auto-Clean system has been programmed into your appliance.

When should I use the Auto-Clean function?

You should clean your appliance after every 60 brews (approximately 2 months). This machine will also display the clean warning if it detects scale build-up even if 60 cycles have not elapsed. After 60 brews, the clean warning will be activated and display at the beginning of each brew cycle. "CLEAN" will scroll across the display three times to remind you to clean the appliance. If you would like to clean your appliance prior to 60 brew cycles because of hard water, you may do so.

How do I use the Auto-Clean function?

Follow the simple steps below. Your appliance will take care of the rest.

  1. Combine 6 cups of white vinegar and 4 cups of cold water in the Carafe.
  2. Pour the solution into the Water Reservoir.
  3. Make sure the lid of the Carafe is in place and place the empty Carafe on the Carafe Plate.
  4. Press and hold the Brew Button for 4 seconds.
  5. The light on the Brew Button will illuminate.
  6. "CLEAN” will scroll across the display during the auto-clean cycle.

During the Auto-Clean Cycle Function:

  1. The appliance will brew approximately 5 cups of cleaning solution. Any remaining solution will be held in the appliance for 30 minutes before being brewed.
  2. The appliance will continue brewing the rest of the solution.
  3. When the appliance completes the Auto-Clean cycle (45–60 minutes), the appliance will shut off automatically.
  4. Before using the appliance to brew coffee again, flush water through through the appliance (see the “Getting Started” section).
