Outwell Earth 5 Tent: Pitching and Maintenance Guide
This guide provides instructions for setting up, cleaning, and maintaining your Outwell Earth 5 tent.
Pitching Instructions
Follow these steps to pitch your Outwell Earth 5 tent:
- Step 1: Unpack the tent and observe how it is packed to aid in repacking later.
- Step 2: Select a flat, clear campsite free from stones, branches, or sharp objects. Avoid pitching under trees. Position the tent with the door in the desired direction and the rear facing the wind for stability. A trial pitch is recommended before first use.
- Step 3: Insert poles into the sleeves and secure them.
- Step 4: Erect the tent by inserting poles and securing them.
- Step 5: Peg out the tent and guylines.
Important Pitching Notes:
- Do not pitch the tent too tightly, as it needs to adapt to weather and wind conditions.
- Use storm pegs in strong winds and do not pull pegs out using guylines. U-shaped pegs are recommended for stony or hard ground.
- Avoid spraying insecticides in or on the tent as they can damage the fabric and coating.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Proper care will extend the life of your Outwell tent.
General Care:
- Ensure the tent is completely dry before packing to prevent mildew or rotting.
- Lightly grease metal poles with a non-acidic oil after use.
- Remove dirt with a soft sponge and clean water. Never wash the tent in a washing machine or dry-clean it. Store the tent in a dry place.
Seam Care:
- Periodically use a seam sealer or waterproof spray on seams around zippers and toggles, as these are high-stress areas.
- If seam tape comes off after prolonged sun exposure, remove loose tape and re-seal with seam sealer and waterproof spray.
- Minor leaks can be resealed with seam sealer.
Waterproofing and UV Protection:
- Regularly apply Outwell Waterguard to the flysheet material to prolong its lifespan.
- Be aware that UV rays can damage the tent fabric with prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Outtex® fabric enhances tent longevity.
- Camping near the sea or lakes can increase the effect of UV radiation on the tent, poles, and metal parts.
Groundsheet and Inner Tent:
- If detachable, remove and clean the groundsheet with a sponge and water. Clean dirty floors similarly. Allow to dry before packing.
- If the inner tent is wet or dirty, remove and clean it. The tent can be packed with or without the inner tent.
Mud Valance:
- Do not use the mud valance to adjust the tent or pull out tent pegs, as it is a weaker point designed only to keep wind and water out of the living and storage areas.
Condensation Management:
Condensation can occur on the inside surfaces of the tent under certain weather conditions. To prevent this:
- Remove wet clothes from the tent.
- Ensure good ventilation.
- Pitch the tent on an Outwell® Footprint.
Condensation should not be confused with leakage.
Outwell Wind Stabilizer System (OWS System):
Testing and performance ratings for the OWS System are based on Outwell's knowledge and available techniques at the time of testing. Ratings are obtained by testing similar tents and are not a guarantee. Factors like ground conditions, pegs, weather, and setup can affect performance.
