iRig Mic HD 2 Status LED
The multicolor LED on the iRig Mic HD 2 provides information about its operating status:
- LED is off: iRig Mic HD 2 is not connected to a power source.
- LED is bright blue: iRig Mic HD 2 is connected and active.
- LED is green: iRig Mic HD 2 is active and the input signal is low.
- LED is orange: iRig Mic HD 2 is active and the input signal is OK.
- LED is red: iRig Mic HD 2 is active and the input signal is too high.
Setting Optimal Gain
When using the iRig Mic HD 2, monitor the status LED to set the optimal input gain:
- If the LED alternates between BLUE and GREEN, or is always BLUE or GREEN, increase the input gain by rotating the level control clockwise.
- If the LED flashes RED, decrease the input level by rotating the gain control counterclockwise.
- For optimal level setting, the LED should alternate between GREEN and ORANGE while you speak or sing.
The gain control is slightly recessed to minimize accidental changes during use.
Signal Flow
The iRig Mic HD 2 uses quality electronic components. The diaphragm converts sound into electrical energy, which is amplified accurately with minimal coloration. This analog signal is then converted into digital data by the microphone's circuitry for use by computers or iOS devices. This makes the iRig Mic HD 2 ideal for recording vocals, podcasts, and acoustic instruments.
Cardioid Unidirectional Pickup Pattern
The iRig Mic HD 2 features a cardioid (unidirectional) pickup pattern, meaning it primarily captures sound from the front, minimizing sound from the sides and rear. This reduces the risk of feedback and makes it ideal for vocals, speech, instruments, and interviews.
Tip: While the built-in microphones of mobile devices are omnidirectional (capturing sound from all directions), the iRig Mic HD 2 offers increased clarity and isolation from unwanted sounds.
Proximity Effect
As a unidirectional microphone, the iRig Mic HD 2's response to low frequencies changes with distance from the sound source:
- For more warmth and bass (fuller voices), speak or sing very close to the microphone (a few inches or less).
- For a lighter and brighter sound, maintain a greater distance (over 10 inches / 25 centimeters).
This effect applies to both vocals and instruments.
Recording Applications
Vocals and Speech
The iRig Mic HD 2 is excellent for recording voice and speech, such as interviews. The proximity effect allows you to shape the sound: closer proximity yields more warmth and bass. For a "big" vocal sound with maximum presence, position the vocalist 1-3 inches from the capsule. The built-in windscreen helps prevent plosives at this close range. For a lighter sound, increase the distance.
The acoustic environment significantly impacts recording quality. Rooms with carpets and curtains absorb sound, resulting in a drier recording that is easier to mix. Rooms with glass, marble, wood floors, or tile produce natural reverb, which can be pleasing but difficult to remove during mixing.
Use the iRig Mic HD 2 for high-quality on-the-go speech and interview recordings.
Acoustic Instruments
With its high-quality components, the iRig Mic HD 2 can record acoustic instruments with studio-quality sound. For acoustic guitar, aim the microphone at the neck where it joins the body (around the 12th or 14th frets) for a balanced sound with clear highs. Placing it in front of the soundhole captures more low-end. For more high-end detail, position the microphone further away from the guitar, either at the neck position or above the instrument near the player's head. Experiment with different positions to achieve your desired sound.
An All-Around Microphone
The iRig Mic HD 2's wide gain range allows it to record a broad spectrum of instruments, including guitar amplifiers, drums, and wind instruments. It is a versatile, all-around microphone.
Troubleshooting
Sound is distorted.
Check that the input level on the iRig Mic HD 2 is set correctly. If the red LED lights up when you speak or sing, decrease the input level as described in this guide.
The iRig Mic HD 2 status LED is always dark blue and no sound is produced.
For the iRig Mic HD 2 to power on, a Core Audio-compatible audio app must be launched on your iOS device or Mac.
- iOS: Ensure you are using an app that supports digital audio input from the Lightning connector.
- Mac: Ensure "iRig Mic HD 2" is selected as the audio input device in your audio application's preferences.
