Valve Clearance Adjustment
For the 2016 Ford Fiesta L4-1.6L, 303-01B Engine - 1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT (88kW/120PS) - Sigma
Materials Required
Name | Specification |
---|---|
Motorcraft® SAE 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend Motor Oil (XO-5W20-QSP) | WSS-M2C945-A |
Flange Sealant (CU7Z-19B508-A) | WSS-M2G348-A11 |
Pre-Adjustment Checks
WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure, refer to health and safety warnings in section 100-00 General Information. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
Refer to: Health and Safety Precautions (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).
Refer to: Valve Cover (303-01B Engine - 1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT (88kW/120PS) - Sigma, Removal and Installation).
NOTE: Turn the engine clockwise only and use the crankshaft bolt only.
NOTE: Measure the valve clearance at base circle, with the lobe pointed away from the tappet, before removing the camshafts. Failure to measure all clearances prior to removing the camshafts will necessitate repeated removal and installation and wasted labor time.
Measure each valve's clearance and record its location.
Diagram Description (E90509): The engine's valve cover area is shown highlighted in blue, with two pink markers indicating specific bolt locations.
Valve Clearance Specifications
Nominal Clearance:
- Intake: 0.007 in (0.185 mm)
- Exhaust: 0.012 in (0.325 mm)
Acceptable Clearance:
- Intake: 0.006–0.009 in (0.14–0.23 mm)
- Exhaust: 0.011–0.015 in (0.28–0.37 mm)
Replace the valve tappets as needed.
Diagram Description (E147317): An illustration shows a valve tappet within the engine head, with a blue tool positioned to measure or adjust it.
Diagram Description (E132225): The camshafts are shown installed in the cylinder head. The lobes are positioned away from the tappets, indicating the correct orientation for clearance measurement. A dimension of 1.5mm is noted.
Adjustment Procedure
Refer to: Camshafts (303-01B Engine - 1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT (88kW/120PS) - Sigma, Removal and Installation).
NOTE: The number on the valve tappet indicates its thickness in millimeters, representing the digits following the decimal. For example, a tappet marked 0.650 has a thickness of 3.650 mm.
NOTE: Select the closest tappet size to the ideal tappet thickness required. Mark the installation location for each tappet.
Use the following formula to determine the correct tappet thickness: tappet thickness = measured clearance + existing tappet thickness - nominal clearance.
Install the correct valve tappet(s).
Diagram Description (E165035): The camshafts are shown installed in the cylinder head with numbered bolts and bearing caps. Specific bolts (17, 18, 19, 20) are highlighted in pink for torque application.
Torque Specifications for Crankshaft Bearing Caps and VCT Bridge:
Stage | Application | Torque |
---|---|---|
Stage 1 | 1-16 | 62 lb.in (7 Nm) |
Stage 2 | 17-20 | 89 lb.in (10 Nm) |
Stage 3 | 1-16 | 45° |
Stage 4 | 17 and 19 | 70° |
Stage 5 | 18 and 20 | 53° |
Tighten the bolts evenly, half a turn at a time, until the crankshaft bearing caps and the VCT bridge are seated against the cylinder head.
Turn the crankshaft back by 45° (counterclockwise).
Turn the camshafts to measure the valve clearance.
Repeat the procedure as necessary until all valve clearances are within specifications.
Turn the crankshaft clockwise until it stops against the special tool.
Refer to: Camshaft Seal (303-01B Engine - 1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT (88kW/120PS) - Sigma, Removal and Installation).
Torque for Camshaft Seal: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)
Diagram Description (E98509): The engine valve cover is shown, with two pink markers indicating bolt locations for installation.
