AFL Comealongs

High-Strength Tools for ACSR, AAC, AAAC, ACAR, ACSS, and ACSS/TW Conductors

3000, 3100, and 3200 Series Comealongs

AFL's 3000, 3100, and 3200 Series Comealongs are engineered for pulling conductors up to initial sag tensions. These tools feature a rugged design with heat-treated bodies and high-strength steel eyebolts for increased durability. They come fully assembled and ready for use, with double lock nuts and cotter pins for secure body location. The angled bail provides clearance for accessory installation.

Each comealong is individually tested and rated for specific conductor types including ACSR, AAC, AAAC, and ACAR. Periodic maintenance, including cleaning and inspection for damage, is recommended. A pull test equal to the rated strength should be performed every six months and before each job.

HiTemp® Comealongs (400000HT and 410000HT Series)

The HiTemp® Comealongs are specifically designed for ACSS and ACSS/TW conductors. These tools offer enhanced strength and durability for demanding applications. Like the 3000 series, they feature a rugged, heat-treated design and high-strength eyebolts. They are fully assembled and undergo rigorous testing before shipment.

ACSS and ACSS/TW conductors may experience relaxation and creep, necessitating proper installation and adherence to tension limits. These comealongs are rated between 20% and 50% of the conductor's ASTM rated strength.

Important Safety Information: Comealongs are not designed for use as dead ends and should not be used to hold conductors at sag tension limits for extended periods (over 6 hours).

Installation Instructions

Unused Comealongs:

  1. Loosen bolts to open the comealong. Ensure the bore and conductor groove are clean.
  2. Position the comealong at least 10 feet from the dead end or joint.
  3. Place the conductor into the groove and finger tighten the bolts.
  4. Using a torque wrench, tighten bolts sequentially from the bail end to the nose end. This requires a minimum of 6 passes. Initial pass: 80% of target torque (e.g., 32 lb-ft for 1/2" bolt). Subsequent passes: full target torque (e.g., 40 lb-ft for 1/2" bolt), ensuring even clamping.

Used Comealongs:

  1. Perform periodic maintenance: clean thoroughly and inspect for nicks, cracks, or damage to eyebolts or bails. Keep eyebolts clean and oiled. Dispose of damaged units.
  2. Conduct a pull test equal to the rated strength stamped on the comealong.
  3. Follow the installation steps for unused comealongs.

Using Comealongs in Tandem:

If installation tension exceeds a single comealong's rated strength, use comealongs in tandem. Utilize a sling with shackles and a pulley block for load distribution. Protective sleeves should be placed over the conductor to prevent damage from shackles. The rated strength of a tandem configuration is 150% of the lowest-rated comealong in the set.
