Broan 40355, 40455, and VT9W Wall Controls: Installation and Owner Guide
Wall Control Compatibility
Refer to the wall control compatibility chart included with this wall control.
Wall Control Installation
WARNING: It is recommended to wear safety glasses and gloves while performing these instructions. Always disconnect the unit before making any connections. Failure to disconnect power could result in electric shock or damage to the wall control or electronic module inside the unit.
CAUTION: Failure to comply with the following can cause erratic operation of the unit and/or the wall control:
- Never install more than one X-TOUCH main wall control per unit.
- Make sure that the wires do not short-circuit between themselves or by touching any other components on the wall control. Avoid poor wiring connections.
- To reduce electrical interference (noise) potential, do not run wall control wiring next to control contactors or near light dimming circuits, electrical motors, dwelling/building power or lighting wiring, or power distribution panel.
- Unplug the ventilation unit from power source.
- Cut a 2 7/8" x 1 3/8" hole in a wall, at a convenient location for the wall control. Route the cable from the unit to this hole. (Note: Dimensions shown are for an installation without wall box.)
- Temporarily place the switch over the hole and mark both mounting screw hole positions. Remove the switch, drill both screw holes (3/16" Ø) in wall and insert wall anchors (included).
- Strip the end of the cable to access the 4 wires. Strip the end of each wire.
- Using a small blade screwdriver, connect each wire to its corresponding terminal on the back of the wall control: Yellow wire to "Y", Black wire to "B", Red wire to "R", and Green wire to "G".
- Mount the wall control to the wall.
- Plug the ventilation unit and test the wall control operation.
Wall Control Use
Backlight
If the backlight is not illuminated, pressing on MODE, % HUM or TURBO key will activate it. The backlight remains illuminated for 10 seconds after the last key is pressed (no matter the key).
Operating Modes
NOTE: If the backlight is not illuminated, press on any key to activate the wall control.
Press the MODE key to choose the operation mode of the ventilation unit (except TURBO MODE). The operating mode will then appear on the LCD screen (STANDBY, RECIRC, 20 min/h, CONT, SMART).
- STANDBY: Puts the unit on standby mode, so it will only respond to override wall controls (if present). On LCD screen, only the house is visible showing the control is powered on. This is the factory set default mode.
- RECIRC: Air is recirculated inside the house on high speed.
- 20 min/h: The ventilation unit exchanges air intermittently on a one hour cycle as follows: OFF for 40 min. (or recirculation for 40 min. on low or high speed) and then exchange air during 20 min. on low speed. Repeat cycle after the 20 min. of air exchange.
- CONT: Air is exchanged with the outdoors at the minimum blower speed.
- SMART: Air exchange is managed according to indoor humidity measured by the wall control and outdoor temperature. In SMART mode, the SMART icon appears as well as the current operating mode called by SMART.
SMART Mode Operation Examples:
- TURBO Mode called by SMART Mode: The unit operates on high speed.
- CONT Mode called by SMART Mode: The unit operates on low speed.
- 20 min/h Mode called by SMART Mode: The unit operates on intermittent cycles.
- ECO Mode called by SMART Mode: The unit is set to standby for 50 minutes (or in RECIRC mode for 50 minutes) and then exchanges air during 10 minutes on low speed. This mode is exclusively activated by SMART mode.
- STANDBY Mode called by SMART Mode: The unit is on standby.
The chart below shows the operating modes called by SMART mode, according to the indoor humidity percentage and the outdoor temperature.
Chart Description: A graph showing different operating modes (TURBO, CONT, 20min/h, STANDBY) based on Indoor Humidity Level (%) on the Y-axis and Outdoor Temperature (°C) on the X-axis. The graph is divided into zones indicating which mode is active for different combinations of humidity and temperature.
Functions
Turbo Function
- Press the TURBO function key to turn the unit on air exchange in high speed during 4 hours, then, the unit will get back to its previous operation mode. The TURBO icon is flashing during the 4-hour cycle. To exit this function before the end of its 4-hour cycle, press on TURBO or MODE key; the unit will get back to its previous operation mode.
- Press and hold the TURBO function key during 3 seconds to turn the unit on air exchange in high speed continuously. The TURBO icon appears and stays continuously. To exit this TURBO mode, press on TURBO or MODE key; the unit will get back to its previous operation mode.
Dehumidistat Function
The Dehumidistat function has been created to manage indoor relative humidity excess. When the actual home relative humidity percentage (RH%) detected is over the set value, "drops" appears on screen and the control overrides the current mode, turning on the unit on high speed exchange until the indoor relative humidity % set is reached. The unit then returns to its previous operation setting. Refer below to find out how to set the indoor relative humidity %.
How to Enable and Disable the Dehumidistat Function:
- In all modes except STANDBY and SMART, press the % HUM key to enable the Dehumidistat function. The actual home RH% level appears on screen (enabled).
- Press once more on the % HUM key to disable the Dehumidistat function. The actual home RH% level disappears from screen (disabled).
How to Set the Indoor Relative Humidity (RH %) Level:
- Press and hold the % HUM key for 3 seconds. The actual RH% level appears on screen. Default value: 44%. Lower value: 30%. Higher value: 56%.
- Press the % HUM key to change the value. The value changes by 2% increments.
- To exit this setting menu, press and hold the % HUM key for 3 seconds or wait 10 seconds.
Settings
