80V Low IQ Ideal Diode Controllers from Diodes Incorporated Simplify Reverse Battery Polarity and Overvoltage Protection in Modern Automotive Architectures
Diodes Incorporated
Plano, Texas – July 23, 2025
Diodes Incorporated (Nasdaq: DIOD) today introduces the AP74502Q and AP74502HQ automotive-compliant* 80V ideal diode controllers, providing robust and reliable protection against reverse connections and voltage transients. Typical applications include advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), body control modules, infotainment systems, exterior lighting, and USB charging ports.
The ideal diode controllers offer efficient and fast reverse polarity protection circuits. They also include a load disconnect function for overvoltage and undervoltage events. With 80V capability, they are suitable for 12V and 24V batteries, including hybrid and battery electric vehicles (EVs), and emerging 48V systems.
The shift to 48V systems enables EV innovations like electric turbocharging and improved regenerative braking. The higher voltage also supports advanced infotainment systems and electrified auxiliary components, potentially leading to zonal architectures for more efficient power distribution and reduced wiring. The ±80V rating is particularly relevant for the stricter overvoltage stress conditions in these 48V systems.
Unlike ideal diodes with reverse current blocking, these devices are suitable for applications where energy may return to the input supply. They can also function as surge stoppers to protect overvoltage supplies and downstream loads against unsuppressed load dump transients.
The AP74502Q and AP74502HQ controllers support input voltages as low as 3.2V, ensuring reliable operation during severe cold crank conditions that can significantly drop battery voltage. Both devices feature a peak gate turn-off sink current of 2.3A, enabling rapid turn-off of external N-channel MOSFETs during overvoltage or undervoltage events.
Performance Details
When the charge pump is enabled, the operating quiescent current (IQ) is 62µA, and 1µA in disabled mode. This minimizes overall system power consumption and reduces battery drain.
The AP74502Q provides a smooth start-up with inherent inrush current control, featuring a peak gate source current of typically 60µA. This is beneficial for applications requiring initial current surge limitation. In contrast, the AP74502HQ offers a higher 11mA peak gate source current, similar to previous Diodes' ideal diode controller offerings. This stronger gate drive allows for faster MOSFET turn-on, within 1µs (typ.).
The AP74502Q and AP74502HQ are available in the industry-standard SOT28 package, operating from -40°C to +125°C. Both devices are priced at $0.27 each for 1,000-piece quantities.
