04 General Power Tool Safety Warnings
WARNING! Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations, and specifications provided with this power tool. Failure to follow all instructions may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious injury. Save all warnings and instructions for future reference. The term “power tool” refers to mains-operated (corded) or battery-operated (cordless) power tools.
Work area safety:
- Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
- Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres (e.g., presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust). Power tools create sparks that may ignite dust or fumes.
- Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause loss of control.
Electrical safety:
- Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug. Do not use adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools.
- Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces (pipes, radiators, appliances). There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
- Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool increases the risk of electric shock.
- Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling, or unplugging. Keep cords away from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
- When operating outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use.
- If operating in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply.
Personal safety:
- Stay alert, watch what you are doing, and use common sense. Do not use while tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication.
- Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment like dust masks, non-skid shoes, hard hats, or hearing protection reduces personal injuries.
- Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power or battery, picking up, or carrying the tool.
- Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on.
- Do not overreach. Maintain proper footing and balance at all times for better control.
- Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep hair and clothing away from moving parts.
- If dust extraction facilities are provided, ensure they are connected and used properly.
- Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use lead to complacency or ignoring safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury.
Power tool use and care:
- Do not force the power tool. Use the correct tool for your application.
- Do not use the power tool if the switch does not function correctly.
- Disconnect the plug or remove the battery pack before making adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the tool.
- Store idle power tools out of reach of children and do not allow untrained persons to operate them.
- Maintain power tools and accessories. Check for misalignment, binding, or breakage. If damaged, have the tool repaired before use.
- Use the power tool, accessories, and bits in accordance with instructions, considering working conditions.
- Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean, and free from oil and grease.
Battery tool use and care:
- Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer.
- Use power tools only with specifically designated battery packs.
- When the battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects to prevent short-circuiting.
- Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from the battery; avoid contact. If contact occurs, flush with water. If liquid contacts eyes, seek medical help.
- Do not use a damaged or modified battery pack or tool.
- Do not expose a battery pack or tool to fire or excessive temperature (above 130°C).
- Follow all charging instructions and do not charge outside the specified temperature range.
Service:
- Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts.
- Never service damaged battery packs. Service should only be performed by the manufacturer or authorized providers.
Safety instructions for all operations:
- Hold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces when performing operations where accessories may contact hidden wiring.
Safety instructions when using long drill bits:
- Never operate at higher speed than the maximum speed rating of the drill bit.
- Always start drilling at low speed with the bit tip in contact with the workpiece.
- Apply pressure only in direct line with the bit and do not apply excessive pressure.
Additional safety information:
- Secure the workpiece.
- Always wait until the power tool has come to a complete stop before placing it down.
- Switch the power tool off immediately if the application tool becomes blocked.
- Use suitable detectors to determine if there are hidden supply lines or contact the local utility company for assistance.
