What Are Infrared Rays?

Infrared is the band of light we perceive as heat. It cannot be seen with the naked eye but can be felt as heat. The sun produces most of its energy in the infrared spectrum. Infrared rays heat your body directly without heating the air in between, a process called conversion. Infrared is divided into three segments by wavelengths:

  • Near Infrared: 0.76-1.5 microns
  • Middle Infrared: 1.5-5.6 microns
  • Far Infrared: 5.6-1000 microns

Far Infrared penetrates organic substances like the human body two to three inches, providing a uniform warming effect.

Diagram Description: A spectrum chart showing Gamma Rays, X Rays, Ultra Violet, Infrared, Microwaves, Radio Waves, with wavelengths indicated from 0.76 to 1000 microns, categorizing Near, Middle, and Far Infrared.

Are Infrared Rays Safe?

Infrared rays are part of sunlight, making them safe and beneficial to the body. Health professionals use infrared heat lamps for muscle and joint problems, and hospital incubators use infrared heating systems to keep newborns warm.

What Is An Electromagnetic Field (EMF)?

An Electromagnetic Field (EMF) is a physical field produced by electrically charged objects, a fundamental force of nature. It is a combination of an electric field (from stationary charges) and a magnetic field (from moving charges/currents). The magnetic field is measured in milligauss (mG). Maxxus sauna products are designed to have low EMF. Low EMF carbon heater panels range from 5mG-10mG at two inches, Ultra Low EMF panels range from 3mG-5mG, and Near Zero EMF/Full Spectrum models are less than 3mG. NIR heaters are approximately 5mG-7mG at two inches.

Studies on EMF exposure have not led to established permissible exposure limits (PEL) by bodies like OSHA. There is no consensus on the health hazard from EMF exposure. Scientific evidence suggests that low-power, low-frequency electromagnetic radiation from infrared saunas does not constitute a short- or long-term health hazard.

Disclaimer

The infrared rays emitted by your sauna are reported to offer therapeutic benefits based on research. These benefits are for reference only; this manual does not imply that infrared saunas cure or treat any disease. If you have a medical condition, are taking prescription drugs, or have acute joint injuries, consult your medical physician before using the sauna. Persons with surgical implants typically do not experience adverse effects but should also consult their medical physician or surgeon.

How It Works

Infrared Saunas use infrared radiant energy to penetrate body tissue and produce perspiration. Traditional saunas use steam to heat the air, requiring temperatures up to 190°F. Infrared saunas achieve the same effect at temperatures up to 120°F, making the environment more tolerable.

Diagram Description: Two figures illustrating heat transfer. One shows a traditional sauna where heat warms the air, then the body. The other shows an infrared sauna where infrared rays directly penetrate the body.

Health Benefits

Infrared rays provide deep heating to muscle tissues and internal organs through conversion, without overburdening the heart. The body's natural cooling process of perspiration removes toxins, waste residue, and heavy metals. This process opens skin pores, discharges waste, and leaves skin glowing and clean with improved tone, elasticity, texture, and color.

Health Benefits Include, But Are Not Limited To:

  • Pain relief from Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Increases blood circulation
  • Cardiovascular conditioning
  • Relaxes muscle spasms
  • Clears, rashes, acne
  • Reduces stress & fatigue
  • Reduces cellulite
  • Enhances skin tone
  • Removes toxins

Sauna Maintenance

Infrared saunas require minimal maintenance. Wipe down with a damp, soft, clean cloth. Do not use chemical-based cleaning agents, as they can be absorbed into the wood.

Tips for Using Your Sauna

  1. A hot/warm shower before use may increase perspiration and comfort.
  2. Drink water prior to, during, and after your sauna session to replenish body fluids.
  3. Regulate temperature using the movable roof vent or by leaving the door slightly open.
  4. Use 2 towels: one for the bench to absorb perspiration and add comfort, and a second to wipe perspiration for faster sweating and to prevent dripping. Never place towels over the floor heater. Use a third towel for legs if they become cold. Do not allow sweat puddles to develop onto the floor panel.
  5. This is a non-commercial sauna. For every three hours ON, it must be turned OFF for one hour to cool down.
  6. Increasing sauna sessions may be beneficial for boosting the immune system at the first sign of a cold or flu.
  7. Massage affected areas during the session to relieve sore and tense muscles.
  8. Elevate ankles and feet, moving them close to heat emitters for a deep heating effect.
  9. Apply oil and treatment to hair, wrap with a towel, and rinse thoroughly after the session.
  10. The peaceful and relaxed state may help you sleep easier and deeper.
  11. Conserve energy by unplugging the sauna when not in use, especially for extended periods.
  12. After the session, do not shower immediately. Allow the body to cool down with the door slightly opened. Once comfortable, exit and wait about fifteen minutes for complete cooling before showering.

Safeguards For Your Sauna

  1. Do not install the sauna near water, bathtubs, showers, wet basements, or swimming pools where water may splash onto the sauna.
  2. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners. Unplug the sauna before cleaning. Use plain water and a soft damp cloth.
  3. Route the power supply cord to avoid being walked on or pinched.
  4. When replacement parts are required, ensure they meet manufacturer specifications. Unauthorized substitutes may result in fire, electrical shock, or other hazards. After repairs, have a service technician perform a safety check.
  5. Do not use wall receptacle adapters, surge protectors, or extension cords between the sauna cord and wall outlet.

Troubleshooting Guide

1. No Heat Coming From Some Of The Heat Emitters

  • Solution: Check that all heat emitter cords are properly connected, including the cord to the heat emitter underneath the bench (if applicable). Verify connections to the roof and power supply.
  • Solution: If some emitters work but others do not, the non-working ones may be damaged. Contact the manufacturer for replacement parts.
  • Solution: If emitters are not working but the control panel displays time/temperature, the temperature sensor may be improperly plugged in or damaged. Turn off the control panel. Locate the red and black wires labeled "TEMP SENSOR" near the air vent towards the rear of the sauna. Disconnect them and connect the spare temperature sensor. Insert the spare sensor down the vent on the roof. Turn the control panel on and press the power button. If heat emitters now work, the "TEMP SENSOR" was the issue. Remove the original sensor and replace it with the spare one. Wait about five minutes to confirm heat generation.
  • Solution: Check wiring harnesses from the power supply on the roof. Ensure the "CTRL" harness is properly connected to the power supply and another "CTRL" harness. If not properly connected, the sauna may show signs of no power.

2. Control Panel Malfunctioning

  • Solution: If the control panel turns on but not off, and numbers flash, there may be a connection problem. Go to the roof, locate the "CTRL" wire harness, disconnect it, check pins for straightness, and reconnect firmly. Attempt to turn the sauna on again. Contact the manufacturer for further troubleshooting.
  • Solution: If the control panel will not turn off, power/work/heat lights do not come on, or temperature/timer buttons do not work, the control panel may be damaged and require replacement. Contact the manufacturer for additional troubleshooting.

3. Sauna Shows Signs Of No Power

  • Solution: Check if the power supply cord is plugged into the wall outlet. Verify the main circuit breaker has not tripped. Inspect the power supply on the roof for signs of malfunction (high temperature, burning odor, strange sounds) and check power cords for damage. If issues are found, unplug immediately and contact the manufacturer.
  • Solution: If the sauna is plugged in but there is no power at the control panel, the power supply may need to be reset. Locate the power supply on the roof and press the RESET button. Attempt to turn the sauna on at the control panel. Contact the manufacturer for further troubleshooting.
  • Solution: There could be damage to the temperature sensor. Turn the control panel off. Locate the red and black wires labeled "TEMP SENSOR" near the air vent towards the rear of the sauna. Disconnect them and connect the spare temperature sensor. Insert the spare sensor down the vent on the roof. Turn the control panel on and press the power button. If the heat emitters now generate heat, the temperature sensor was the cause. Remove the original sensor and replace it with the spare one.

Maintenance

Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners inside the sauna. Unplug the sauna before cleaning. Use plain water and a soft cloth. Clean the floor and floor heater regularly. Do not use benzene, alcohol, or strong cleaning chemicals. Any chemical that can damage or be absorbed into the wood will damage the sauna.
