Using the Terrain Response System

The Terrain Response system adapts the vehicle's powertrain, chassis, and traction systems to match the driving conditions. Incorrect use can lead to poor performance and potential damage to the vehicle's suspension and transmission.

Caution: Improper use of Terrain Response programs can degrade vehicle performance on specific road surfaces and may cause damage to the suspension and transmission.

The number of available Terrain Response programs varies depending on the vehicle's specification.

When a Terrain Response program is engaged, a corresponding icon illuminates. The selected program remains active for up to 6 hours after the ignition is switched off. Upon the next ignition cycle, the default program will automatically re-engage.

Notes

The "Grass/Gravel/Snow" program is engaged by default. It should be manually disengaged when no longer needed.

Information regarding the suitability of each Terrain Response program for different surfaces can be displayed on the touch-screen. Access this via the "Off-Road Information" menu within the "4x4i" function. See INFORMATION ON OFF-ROAD DRIVING.

Vehicles with Coil Suspension

To select a Terrain Response program, use the buttons on the center console. Press the "left" or "right" arrow buttons to cycle through the available programs. See DRIVER CONTROLS.

Vehicles with Air Suspension and Electronic Control

Terrain Response program selection is made via a rotary selector on the center console. See DRIVER CONTROLS.

Some vehicles feature an automatic driving program (AUTO). This program automatically assesses and selects the most suitable Terrain Response program for the current conditions.

If the Terrain Response rotary selector is in the raised position, push it down to engage the AUTO program. An indicator light will illuminate to confirm engagement. The rotary selector will remain in the lowered position.

If the Terrain Response rotary selector is in the lowered position, press and release it to disengage the AUTO program. The indicator light will extinguish, and the rotary selector will return to the raised position.

The rotary selector will maintain its last selected position (raised or lowered) upon the next ignition cycle.

General Program (Special Programs Off)

The general program is compatible with all road conditions and suitable for off-road driving.

Select the general program for driving on hard surfaces such as dry gravel, shingle, or dry wooden decking.

Engage the general program when specialized programs are not required. This returns all vehicle systems to their default settings, except for Hill Descent Control (HDC), which remains active if manually engaged. See OVERVIEW OF HILL DESCENT CONTROL (HDC).

Grass/Gravel/Snow

Select the "Grass/Gravel/Snow" program for driving on hard surfaces covered with loose or slippery material.

Notes:

Mud-Ruts

Use the "Mud-Ruts" program for driving through mud, ruts, soft, or uneven terrain.

For "Mud-Ruts" operation, it is recommended to shift the transfer case to the low range. If low range is not engaged, a message will appear on the information display.

When the "Mud-Ruts" program and low range are selected, the vehicle's suspension will automatically raise.

Sand

Select the "Sand" program for driving on predominantly soft surfaces, such as dry sand or deep gravel.

Notes:

Rock Crawl

Use the "Rock Crawl" program for predominantly rocky terrain, including crossing streams with rocky beds.

The "Rock Crawl" program provides excellent low-speed control of the vehicle.

The "Rock Crawl" program can only be engaged when the transfer case is in low range. If the program is engaged in high range, a prompt will appear on the information display to shift to low range. See SELECTING HIGH AND LOW RANGE.

Dynamic

Select the "Dynamic" program to utilize the vehicle's full potential.

The "Dynamic" program coordinates the vehicle's driving systems to enhance grip, handling, and maneuverability. Driver involvement is increased, optimizing the vehicle's systems for more spirited driving.

Notes:

Drive Mode Selection

For certain Terrain Response programs, Hill Descent Control (HDC) automatically engages. HDC can be manually switched off or on if needed. The information display will show the HDC status. See OVERVIEW OF HILL DESCENT CONTROL (HDC).

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) automatically engages for several Terrain Response programs. DSC can be manually switched off or on if needed. See DSC SYSTEM DEACTIVATION.

System Operation Difficulties

Caution: Improper use of Terrain Response programs can degrade vehicle performance on specific road surfaces and may cause damage to the vehicle's suspension and transmission.

If a temporary system malfunction is detected, the selected Terrain Response program may not activate. If the malfunction persists, consult a dealer or authorized workshop.

In the event of a persistent malfunction, the general program will automatically engage, and the indicator light will remain continuously illuminated. Selecting any other program will display warning messages on the information panel. In such cases, consult a dealer or authorized workshop.

If an activated vehicle system becomes temporarily inoperable, the general program will automatically engage. If system operation is restored within 60 seconds, the previously selected program will re-engage, provided the ignition was not switched off during that time. After 60 seconds, or if the ignition is switched off, the general program will automatically engage.

Selecting an inappropriate Terrain Response program will cause the indicator light for the selected program to flash amber. Additional information will be displayed on the information panel.

If no action is taken within 60 seconds, the warnings will disappear, and the information panel will display the selected driving program.
