Land Rover Terrain Response System
The Terrain Response system allows the driver to select specific vehicle settings tailored to different terrain types, optimizing performance and capability. This guide explains the system's functions and modes.
Before Driving Off-Road
Before venturing off-road, it is crucial for drivers to familiarize themselves with the vehicle's controls. This includes the manual gear selection mode, CommandShift™, Hill Descent Control (HDC), and the Terrain Response system.
Operating the Terrain Response System
The desired special program is selected using a rotary knob located in front of the gear selector. Information on the purpose of each Terrain Response program for specific surface types is displayed on the touch screen via the 4x4 Info soft button. Touch the Terrain Response icon, then the information icon. The displayed text relates to the current Terrain Response program.
System Notes:
- Selecting an inappropriate program can reduce the vehicle's response to surface changes and shorten the lifespan of the suspension and transmission.
- If the system becomes partially inoperable for any reason, it may be impossible to engage special programs.
- If a functioning vehicle system becomes temporarily inoperable, the general program is automatically engaged. When the system returns to normal operation, the previously engaged program will be re-engaged, unless the ignition has been turned off in the interim.
- If an inappropriate special program is selected (e.g., Rock Crawl in high range), the corresponding indicator will flash amber, and additional information will be displayed on the information screen. If no action is taken within 60 seconds, the warning will be cancelled, and the engaged program will be displayed on the information screen.
- If the system becomes completely inoperable, all program symbol backlighting will be extinguished, and a relevant message will be displayed on the information screen.
Terrain Response Programs
General Program (Special Programs Off)
This program is compatible with all road conditions and off-road driving. If it is not active, it can be engaged before driving on surfaces such as hard road surfaces, dry gravel, or wooden decking. The program should be engaged as soon as the need for a special program is no longer present. When a special program is disengaged, all vehicle systems revert to their normal settings, except for the HDC system. If HDC was manually selected, it remains active.
Grass / Gravel / Snow
This program should be used where a hard surface is covered by loose, soft, or slippery material. For driving on thick gravel, the 'Sand' program is recommended. If the vehicle is unable to traverse deep snow, disengaging the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) may help. Re-engage DSC once the difficult section has been cleared.
Mud-Ruts
This program is intended for driving through mud, ruts, soft, or uneven surfaces. A lower gear range is recommended for this program. If not selected, a prompt will appear on the information panel. If 'Mud-Ruts' is selected and the low gear range is engaged, the vehicle's suspension will automatically be raised.
Sand
This program is intended for use on surfaces covered by predominantly soft dry sand or thick gravel. If the vehicle is unable to traverse very soft surfaces with dry sand, disengaging the DSC may help. Re-engage DSC once the difficult section has been cleared. If the sand is wet and deep enough to cause the wheels to dig in, the 'Mud-Ruts' program should be used.
Rock Crawl
This program is necessary for driving on rocky terrain, including crossing streams with submerged rocks. This program provides good control at low speeds. The 'Rock Crawl' program can only be engaged in the low gear range. If engaged in the high gear range, a prompt will appear on the information panel to select the low gear range.
Dynamic
This program is associated more with driving style than surface type, optimizing the vehicle's traction and handling characteristics for on-road driving, enhancing feedback and sensitivity from all systems. Select this program to utilize the vehicle's full road potential. Note: When the low gear range is selected, the 'Dynamic' program is automatically disengaged.
Driver Selection of Modes
For some Terrain Response programs, Hill Descent Control (HDC) is automatically activated. If necessary, HDC can be disengaged or activated independently of the Terrain Response system. The information panel displays the status of HDC: whether it is engaged by the system or the driver. Although the dynamic stability control is automatically activated when a special program is engaged, it can be disengaged manually if desired.
