Terrain Response

Using the Terrain Response System

The Terrain Response system is activated using the rotary selector. Around the selector are 5 icons, each representing a specific Terrain Response program. The Automatic mode automatically detects and applies the most suitable program for the prevailing conditions. If the rotary selector is in the extended position, push it in to engage Automatic mode.

Information on the suitability of each Terrain Response program for different surface types can be displayed on the touch screen via the 'Extra features' soft key. Touch the Terrain Response icon, then the information icon. The displayed text relates to the current Terrain Response program.

Normal Program (Special Programs Off)

This program is compatible with all road conditions and is suitable for off-road driving. If it has not been engaged previously, it should be engaged before driving on hard road surfaces. Dry gravel, stony ground, dry wooden decking, etc., all fall into this category.

The program should be engaged as soon as the need for a special program is no longer present. Upon exiting a special program, all vehicle systems, except HDC, will revert to normal settings. If HDC was manually selected, it will remain active.

Grass, Gravel, Snow

This program should be used where a hard surface is covered by loose, wet or slippery material.

Note: For driving on thick gravel, the 'Sand' program is recommended.

Note: If the vehicle is unable to negotiate deep snow, try disengaging the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system. Re-engage the DSC system immediately after clearing the difficult section.

Mud-Ruts

This program should be used for driving through mud, ruts, soft or uneven terrain. A lower gear range is recommended for this program. If it is not selected, a prompt will appear on the information display to engage it. If the 'Mud-Ruts' program and the lower gear range are selected, the vehicle's suspension will automatically raise.

Sand

This program should be used for areas predominantly covered by soft, dry sand or thick gravel.

Note: If the vehicle is unable to negotiate very soft sand, try disengaging the DSC system. Re-engage the DSC system immediately after clearing the difficult section.

If the sand to be negotiated is wet/damp and the wheels are sinking deeply, the 'Mud-Ruts' program should be used.

Rock Crawl

This program is necessary for driving on rocky terrain, including crossing fords with submerged rocks. It provides excellent control at low speeds.

The 'Rock Crawl' program can only be engaged in the lower gear range. If the program is engaged in the higher gear range, a prompt will appear on the information display to select the lower gear range.

Note: If the Off-Road 2 suspension height (see page 125, OFF-ROAD HEIGHT) is selected, and the water obstacle has a gentle entry angle, it may be possible to ford up to 900 mm (35.4 inches). Ensure that the exit from the water is also at a gentle angle. Gentle entry and exit angles will prevent any part of the vehicle from being submerged beyond the stated depth.

Driver Selectable Modes

For certain Terrain Response programs, the Hill Descent Control (HDC) system is automatically activated. If required, HDC can be manually disengaged or engaged independently of Terrain Response. See page 158, HDC CONTROLS.

The information display shows the HDC status: whether it is engaged or not, and whether it has been engaged by the system or the driver.

Although the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system is automatically engaged when a special program is selected, it can be manually disengaged if desired. See page 122, DSC DISENGAGEMENT.

System Operation Notes

⚠️ Engaging an inappropriate program will impair vehicle performance and reduce the lifespan of the suspension and transmission.

If, for any reason, the system becomes partially inoperative, engaging special programs may not be possible.

If an activated vehicle system becomes temporarily inoperative, the normal program will be automatically engaged. When operability is restored, the previously selected program will be re-engaged, provided the ignition has not been switched off in the interim.

If an inappropriate special program is selected (e.g., 'Rock Crawl' in the higher gear range), the relevant indicator will flash amber, and additional information will be displayed on the information display. If no action is taken within 60 seconds, the warning will disappear, and the information display will show the active program.

If the system becomes completely inoperative, the indicators for all special programs will be extinguished, and a relevant message will be displayed on the information display.
