Lutron Maestro Sensor Switch with Companion Switch Installation

Application Note #435, Revision C, March 2020

Introduction

Lutron occupancy and vacancy motion sensors are passive infrared (PIR) sensors that automatically control lights. These sensors detect heat from occupants moving within an area to determine occupancy. The sensors then control lights, turning them off or on automatically, providing convenience and increased energy savings.

Safety Precautions

WARNING: Shock Hazard. May result in serious injury or death. Turn off power at circuit breaker before installing the unit.

Identifying Switch Types

Before installation, identify the type of existing switch:

Tag the wire connected to the COMMON terminal on the existing switch before removing it.

Wiring Instructions

Follow these steps to wire the Maestro sensor switch and companion switches:

  1. Remove the wallplate and switch mounting screws. Carefully remove the switch from the wall, leaving wires attached.
  2. Disconnect wires from the removed switches. If two wires are attached to the same screw, tape them together before disconnecting.
  3. Single Pole Installation: Replace the existing single-pole switch with the Maestro sensor switch. Follow specific wiring instructions based on whether the Maestro sensor switch model has a green-sleeved wire or only a neutral (white) wire. Connect the ground wire to the bare copper or green wire in the wallbox. Connect the white wire to neutral if available. Connect the remaining wires to the appropriate terminals on the Maestro sensor switch. The blue wire is not used in a single-pole circuit and should be capped.
  4. 3-way Installation: Wire the Maestro sensor switch and the companion switch according to the provided diagrams. Connect the ground wire of the companion switch to the wallbox ground. Connect the tagged wire from the switch to the black screw terminal on the companion switch. Connect the wire connected to the blue wire on the Maestro sensor switch to the blue screw terminal on the companion switch. Connect the remaining wire to the brass screw terminal on the companion switch.
  5. 4-way Installation: Wire the Maestro sensor switch and companion switches according to the provided diagrams. For the Maestro sensor switch, connect both tagged wires from the 4-way switch to the blue wire. Connect the remaining wires to the black wires on the Maestro sensor switch. For the companion switch, connect the green wire to the wallbox ground. Connect both tagged wires from the 4-way switch to the blue screw terminal on the companion switch. Connect one remaining wire to the black screw terminal and the other to the brass screw terminal. Repeat for each companion switch replacing a 4-way switch.

Refer to the detailed wiring diagrams provided in the document for specific connections based on different Maestro sensor switch models (e.g., OPS5M, VPS5M, OPS6M2-DV, VPS6M2-DV, OPS6M2N-DV, VPS6M2N-DV) and companion switch types (MA-AS, MSC-AS, MA-AS-277, MSC-AS-277).

Final Steps

  1. Carefully push wires into the wallbox and install the Maestro sensor switch and all companion switches. Leave the wall plate off if custom settings are desired.
  2. Turn power ON at the circuit breaker.

Note: After power is restored, the Maestro sensor switch can be manually turned on or off after 30 seconds. It will not automatically control the load for the first 2 minutes.
