Lutron Caséta Wireless Motion Sensor

Product Overview

The Lutron Caséta Wireless Motion Sensor is a battery-powered, passive infrared (PIR) sensor designed to automatically control lighting systems. It communicates wirelessly via RF to compatible Lutron Caséta dimming or switching devices. The sensor detects the heat emitted by people moving within an area to determine occupancy, then sends commands to turn lights on or off automatically. This offers convenience and energy savings with straightforward installation.

Specifications

Regulatory Approvals

  • cULus listed
  • FCC certified
  • IC certified
  • IFT certified
  • Meets CA (U.S.A.) Energy Commission Title 24 requirements

Power/Performance

  • Operating voltage: 3 V
  • Operating current: 14 μA nominal
  • Requires one CR 123 lithium battery
  • 10-year battery-life design
  • Non-volatile memory stores changes during power loss.

Environment

  • Operating temperature: 32 °F to 104 °F (0 °C to 40 °C)
  • For indoor use only
  • Relative humidity: less than 90% non-condensing

Note: In unconditioned environments where air temperature may approach occupant temperature, additional sensors may be needed for equivalent coverage. This applies to all sensors relying solely on passive infrared technology.

Warranty

1-Year Limited Warranty. For additional warranty information, please visit www.casetawireless.com/warranty.

RF Range

The distance between local load controls and the sensor should not exceed 60 ft (18 m) line-of-sight or 30 ft (9 m) through walls.

Sensor Coverage Test

  • Features a dedicated test button.
  • The lens illuminates orange when motion is detected during test mode.

Wireless Communication Test

  • Features a dedicated test button.
  • Allows associated loads to be turned on and off.

Timeout Options

  • 5 minutes
  • 15 minutes (default setting)
  • 30 minutes

Auto-On Options (Occupancy Versions Only)

  • Enabled: Sensor automatically turns lights ON and OFF (default setting).
  • Disabled*: Lights must be manually turned ON from the dimming or switching device. The sensor automatically turns lights OFF.
  • Pets: Pets emit heat and may activate the sensor. Disabling Auto-On is recommended.
  • Bedroom: If the sensor is placed in a bedroom, disabling Auto-On is recommended.
  • Off While Occupied: If the load control is manually turned OFF, the sensor will not automatically turn lights back ON while the room is occupied. Normal operation resumes after the timeout period expires once the room is vacated. (Example: Watching a movie.)

*There is a 15-second grace period after lights are automatically turned off, during which motion will turn them back on. This feature ensures lights don't turn off unexpectedly if the room is still occupied. After 15 seconds, the grace period ends, and manual activation is required.

Sensitivity Options

  • Low Activity: [default setting]
  • Medium Activity: [medium setting]
  • High Activity: [high setting]

Installation Overview

Sensor Setup

For detailed setup instructions, refer to the Caséta Motion Sensor Quick-Start Guide (P/N 0301931) available at www.lutron.com.

Sensor Placement

  • Recommended mounting height: between 6 ft and 8 ft (1.6 m to 2.4 m).
  • For smaller rooms, placing the sensor between 3 ft and 6 ft (0.91 m to 1.8 m) from the floor may improve detection.
  • The sensor requires a clear line-of-sight to all room occupants for motion detection. Avoid placing it behind or near tall cabinets, shelves, hanging fixtures, or any obstructions. The sensor cannot detect occupants through glass, such as patio or shower doors.
  • Hot objects and moving air currents can affect sensor performance. Mount the sensor at least 4 ft (1.2 m) away from light bulbs and HVAC vents for optimal operation.
  • Sensor performance is influenced by the temperature difference between the ambient room temperature and that of room occupants. Warmer rooms may reduce the sensor's ability to detect occupants.
  • Maintain the specified RF range: distance between load controls and sensor should not exceed 60 ft (18 m) line-of-sight or 30 ft (9 m) through walls.

Mounting

The sensor can be mounted using two methods:

  • Flat Wall-Mount: Mounts directly to a wall using the included mounting bracket. (See Figure A description.)
  • Corner-Mount: Mounts in a corner or on a wall offset from a corner using the included bracket. (See Figure B description.)

Temporary mounting is recommended to test sensor coverage and wireless communication before permanent installation. A 3M™ Command™ adhesive strip is provided for temporary mounting, designed for easy, damage-free removal and is not reusable. Permanent mounting utilizes the provided mounting bracket, screws, and anchors.

Figure A. Flat Wall-Mount: Depicts the mounting bracket and the sensor unit, showing how the bracket attaches to the wall and the sensor slides onto it. An arrow indicates the 'UP' direction for mounting.

Figure B. Corner-Mount: Illustrates the mounting bracket designed for corner installation, showing how it attaches to two surfaces. The sensor unit is shown positioned for mounting.

Dimensions

The sensor has the following dimensions:

  • Height: 4.35 inches (110 mm)
  • Width: 1.8 inches (46 mm)
  • Depth: 1.35 inches (34 mm)

The diagrams show the sensor's front view, side profile, and top/bottom views. The front view indicates the 'Test' button. Dimensions are clearly labeled.

Sensor Coverage

Tested Coverage Area

The sensor provides specific coverage areas based on motion type:

  • Major motion coverage: 20 ft x 2 ft x 45 ft = 1800 ft² (167.2 m²)
  • Minor motion coverage: 15 ft x 2 ft x 35 ft = 1050 ft² (97.5 m²)

A diagram illustrates the coverage area, showing a rectangular footprint. Dimensions are marked: 15 ft (4.6 m) and 20 ft (6.1 m) across the width, and 35 ft (10.7 m) and 45 ft (15.2 m) in depth, indicating the range for minor and major motion detection respectively.
