iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max

Product Environmental Report

Date introduced: September 9, 2025

The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max feature significant environmental considerations:

This report includes data current as of product launch. Product evaluations are based on U.S. configuration of iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Product carbon footprint calculations include in-box accessories as well as packaging.

Product Carbon and Material Footprint

Apple is focused on decarbonizing the three largest sources of emissions: materials, electricity, and transportation. The company is expanding its suppliers' sourcing of renewable energy, with 40 percent of manufacturing electricity for iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max sourced from renewable energy projects. Apple prioritizes the use of recycled, renewable, and low-carbon materials, while focusing on the energy efficiency of its software and hardware.

Apple prioritizes the responsible selection and sourcing of materials and components that contribute significantly to the product carbon footprint. The company works to recover its own scrap at high purity and uses recycled materials, which typically emit less carbon than newly mined materials over its lifetime. This includes sourcing from postindustrial and postconsumer waste streams.

iPhone 17 Pro (256GB) Carbon Footprint Breakdown:

Total Net GHG emissions (CO2e): 64 kg

iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max Recycled Content:

Product Insights

Water

Water is a local resource. Apple's water strategy is respectful of local conditions where it and its suppliers operate, involving data collection and site-level feedback to understand water impacts. The Supplier Clean Water program prioritizes high water users in high water stress locations, driving participants towards an average 50 percent water reuse rate by 2030.

Package and Ship

The packaging is 100 percent fiber-based and uses only recycled or responsibly sourced fibers. Smaller boxes were designed to transport multiple iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max units at once, reducing paper waste and carbon emissions by enabling 25 percent more units per trip.

Safer Cleaners

All final assembly supplier sites are required to use safer cleaners and degreasers in their manufacturing processes, as determined by methodologies like ChemFORWARD, US EPA Safer Choice, or GreenScreen®. Information on these requirements is available.

Energy Efficiency

iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max use at least 55 percent less energy than the energy efficiency standard.

Longevity

iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max feature Ceramic Shield 2, offering 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation. The battery attachment has been redesigned to enable faster, simpler repairs, and repair capabilities for the logic board and enclosure have been enhanced for more discrete and targeted repair options.

Smarter Chemistry

All materials used in Apple products, accessories, and packaging are covered by the Regulated Substances Specification, which restricts key substances of concern. Apple also implements other initiatives:

Further details can be found in Apple's protocols on prioritizing chemicals and integrating toxicological assessments.

Zero Waste to Landfill

No established final assembly supplier sites generate any waste sent to landfill.

People and Environment in Our Supply Chain

Apple requires its suppliers to provide safe and healthy workplaces and to reduce their environmental impact. This includes helping suppliers transition to clean electricity, providing educational opportunities for employees, and supporting waste reduction efforts.

Definitions

Carbon footprint: Estimated emissions calculated according to ISO 14040, ISO 14044, and ISO 14067. Calculations include life cycle phases: Production (extraction, processing, transport of raw materials, manufacture, assembly, packaging), Transport (ground, air, sea shipping), Use (based on assumed usage patterns and geographic grid mix), and End-of-life processing (transport to recycling centers, energy for shredding).

Low-carbon electricity: Refers to renewable electricity and other fossil-free projects considered "low-carbon" but not "renewable" (e.g., nuclear, large-impact hydroelectricity). Apple accounts for the carbon impact of these projects.

Low-carbon materials: Materials created using production techniques with reduced carbon impact, such as Elysis for aluminum smelting or aluminum smelted using hydroelectricity.

Paper: Defined according to ISO 4046, covering materials made from fiber suspension.

Recycled materials: Sourced from recovered rather than mined materials, verified by an independent third party to conform to ISO 14021 definitions.

Renewable materials: Bio-materials that can be regenerated within a human lifespan (e.g., wood fibers, sugarcane), managed responsibly to enable continuous production without depleting resources.

Supplier Clean Energy Program: Apple assists suppliers in decarbonizing their production by transitioning electricity use to 100 percent renewable sources.

Carbon Footprint

Greenhouse gas emissions were calculated using a life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology in accordance with ISO 14040, ISO 14044, and ISO 14067 standards. The LCA boundary includes the physical product, all components, packaging, and in-box accessories.

Product Carbon Footprint by Configuration:

ConfigurationiPhone 17 ProiPhone 17 Pro Max

512GB74 kg CO2e77 kg CO2e
1TB93 kg CO2e95 kg CO2e
2TB--134 kg CO2e

Apple models different configurations to show the potential range of carbon emissions, acknowledging inherent uncertainty due to data limitations. For top component contributors, Apple develops detailed process-based environmental models. For other elements, industry-average data and assumptions are used.
