Introduction
You have purchased the WATERPROOF AND SHOCKPROOF METER FD-103 by FORENSICS DETECTORSTM. This product tracks gas levels (either CO, O2, H2S – depending on your version) suitable for gas detection applications. The monitor operates from a lithium 9V battery that will last up to 2 years. For critical applications, calibration every 12 months is recommended. Always bump test before use. The meter is IP67 compliant and rugged. Gas concentrations exceeding preset alarm points trigger an audio/visual/haptic alarm.
Battery
The FD-103 monitor has a built-in 9V lithium battery. The battery icon appears on the top left LCD display during operation. To replace the battery, unscrew the 4 hex screws and insert a new lithium 9V battery.
Operation
ON/OFF
The ON/OFF power button is located on the front left of the detector. Press the POWER button to turn ON. Preset alarm levels are shown, followed by a 60-second countdown. After the countdown, the FD-103 monitor displays the instantaneous gas concentration detected. To turn OFF, hold the power button for 3 seconds.
Display Mode
Press the MENU (M) button on the right side to scroll through display options. After 6 seconds, the display returns to showing the normal instantaneous detected level.
Display Options:
- STEL: Short Term Exposure reading (15-minute time-weighted average).
- TWA: Time Weighted Average (8-hour time-weighted average reading).
Time Change
When in the time display, hold the MENU button for 2 seconds to change the time. The hour digit flashes; use the POWER button to change the hour. Press the MENU button to toggle to minutes and use the POWER button to change the minutes. Hold the MENU button for 2 seconds to save the time.
Menu Functions
Press the MENU button for 2 seconds to enter menu functions. The default password is 1234. The Power button toggles numbers, and the MENU button toggles digit selection. Hold the MENU button to enter the selected function. Use the MENU button to toggle between selections.
Menu Options:
- L: Low Alarm Point
- H: High Alarm Point
- Z: Zero Calibration
- C: Span Calibration
- Time: Digital Clock Display
Alarm Setpoint
To change alarm setpoints, enter the L (Low) or H (High) menu setting.
Calibration
Your detector is calibrated upon purchase. Regular calibration (EVERY 12 MONTHS) is crucial for accuracy due to sensor degradation and electronic drift. Calibration involves two parts: ZERO Calibration and SPAN Calibration. Always perform ZERO calibration first.
Zero Calibration
Ensures a true ZERO baseline for target gas exposure. For CO or H2S detectors, this is performed in fresh air. For O2 detectors, calibrate in fresh air to 20.9%.
Span Calibration
Ensures accurate gas concentration readings (ppm accuracy). This uses calibration gas, typically at the mid-point of the sensor's detection range. For example, for an H2S detector (0-100ppm range), use 50ppm H2S in air. Connect the calibration gas via the calibration cap at a flow rate of at least 0.5 LPM, directing gas to the sensor hole.

Bump Testing
Bump testing verifies the detector's operation and alarm triggers by exposing it to a small amount of target gas. This builds user confidence, especially in critical applications. It is recommended to bump test upon purchase, unpacking, and before each use.
