TIMEX® Model 262 Service Manual

Introduction

The Timex Model 262 is an 11-3/4 by 12-3/4 ligne high-frequency electric watch movement featuring day and date complications. It is similar to the Model 260 movement but includes additional parts and modifications for these features. The movement allows for setting the day and date without rotating the hands through a full 24-hour cycle. Parts for the day and date mechanism are not interchangeable with similar parts from other Timex electric day and date watches. The Timex code number, found on the edge of the dial, indicates the catalog number, movement number, and year of manufacture.

CAUTION: This watch contains permanent magnets; do not attempt to demagnetize it.

Exploded View and Parts List

The following diagram illustrates the components of the Timex Model 262 movement. The parts are listed with their corresponding numbers:

  • 0032: DIAL
  • 1011: HOUR WHEEL ASS'Y.
  • 1020: CENTER WHEEL ASS'Y.
  • 1041: HOUR WHEEL WASHER
  • 1100: DATE RING
  • 1171: HOUR HAND
  • 1172: MINUTE HAND
  • 1184: SWEEP SECOND HAND
  • 1186: DAY DETENT SPRING
  • 1429: DATE DETENT SPRING
  • 1544: DATE WHEEL
  • 1707: DAY DISC
  • 1717: DAY/DATE FRAME

The diagram shows the "BASIC MOVEMENT" with these components arranged around it.

Disassembly Procedures

Step 1: Removing the Caseback and Movement Cover

To begin disassembly, insert a blade into the opening notch on the bezel and pry the caseback off. The locating tab on the caseback is used for orientation during reassembly.

Remove the energy cell. An energy cell with a voltage less than 1.5 volts or one that has been in service for over a year should be replaced.

Lift off the movement cover. This cover is secured by two tabs that snap into recesses in the bezel.

Step 2: Removing the Stem and Crown Assembly

The stem is held in place by the stem bracket. Release the stem from the bracket using tweezers. (Details of stem removal are described on Page 260.4).

Once the crown and stem assembly is removed, the movement can be accessed and removed from the crystal side of the case.

Step 3: Removing the Crystal, Reflector Ring, and Dial

Use a crystal seating tool to remove the crystal. Then, lift the reflector ring and the movement assembly free of the case. Note the position of the movement locating tabs inside the bezel; these tabs must be aligned with the notches in the dial plate assembly during reassembly.

Step 4: Removing Hands and Dial

Remove all hands. Straighten the four dial tabs sufficiently to free the dial from the movement. Turn the assembly over and carefully lift the dial off the movement. Observe the position of the parts beneath the dial.

Step 5: Removing Internal Components

Remove the internal components in the following order (referencing Figure E):

  • Day Disc
  • Day/Date Frame
  • Date Ring
  • Day Detent Spring
  • Date Detent Spring
  • Date Wheel
  • Hour Wheel Washer
  • Hour Wheel Assembly
  • Center Wheel Assembly

After removing these parts, the basic movement can be replaced with a reconditioned Timex movement. The removed parts are then reassembled onto the reconditioned movement as described in the reassembly section.

The movement assembly can now be cleaned and relubricated according to procedures detailed on pages 260.4 through 260.9. Other metal parts can be cleaned similarly.

CAUTION: Exercise extreme care when cleaning Dials, Hands, Day Discs, and Date Rings, as solvent-type cleaners can often damage their finish.

Reassembly Procedures

After the basic movement has been cleaned and lubricated following the procedures for the Model 260, the Model 262 movement is reassembled in the following order:

Step 1: Assembling the Day/Date Frame and Date Wheel

Assemble the Day/Date Frame, ensuring the two bosses on its back engage the corresponding holes in the Dial Rest. Position the Date Wheel with its tabs aligned as shown in the illustration.

Note: Lubricate the bearing surface of both detent springs with a small amount of non-spreading watch oil (e.g., Moebius Synt-A-Lube).

Step 2: Installing the Day Disc and Date Ring

Place the Day Disc onto the Day Frame, aligning any day on the center line from the hour wheel to the set stem. Use tweezers to deflect the Day Detent Spring, allowing the Day Disc to engage properly.

Position the Date Ring onto the assembly. Using small tweezers or a pick, slightly deflect the Date Detent Spring to ensure the Date Ring engages correctly.

Step 3: Attaching the Dial

Carefully orient the dial onto the movement so that its tabs engage the notches in the dial plate assembly. Hold the dial firmly in place, turn the movement over, and bend the tabs to secure the assembly.

Step 4: Installing the Stem, Crown, and Hands

Insert the crown and stem assembly into the movement. Rotate the crown until the date advances with a snap. Assemble the hands at the 12 o'clock position.

Step 5: Testing Day and Date Functions

Check the proper function of the Day and Date features: Rotate the hands clockwise until the date changes (this should occur around midnight). Continue rotating clockwise until the day changes (this should occur between midnight and 4:30 AM).

Rotate the hands counterclockwise past midnight until the "day" snaps back into position, then rotate clockwise until the day advances again (before 4:30 AM).

Rotate hands counterclockwise past 12 midnight until they indicate 9 PM, then rotate clockwise until the date changes with a snap (this should occur between 11:45 PM and 12:15 AM).

Rotate hands clockwise through 29 hours; both the day and date should advance one position.

Step 6: Final Assembly and Checks

Remove the crown and stem assembly. Place the dial and movement assembly into the bezel, ensuring the movement locating tab aligns with the locating notch. Position the reflector ring on the dial and replace the crystal in the bezel.

Turn the watch over and insert the setting stem and crown through the bezel and into the stem bracket in the movement.

Examine the energy cell ground spring in the movement to confirm it is correctly positioned to prevent a short circuit and ensure proper grounding.

Position the movement cover in the bezel, insert the Timex energy cell Type "A", and snap in the caseback. Push the crown into the run position and verify the watch is running.

Pull the crown out and check the proper function of the day and date features.
