Installation Guide
PLAN
Let's get started!
Follow these step-by-step instructions for a successful installation. Thermacell is available for assistance with any questions.
How It Works
The Thermacell LIV system utilizes a Smart Hub to power multiple on-demand repellers placed throughout your outdoor space. When activated, each repeller emits repellent to create a zone of protection against mosquitoes and other flying insects, precisely when and where it is needed. The LIV+ app allows for remote control, scheduling, and customization of your system.
Planning Your Layout
Identify the areas you use most frequently and wish to protect from mosquitoes. This could include the perimeter of a patio, seating areas, grill stations, or playgrounds. Position repellers near these zones, ideally within 10 feet of the areas requiring protection. For continuous coverage, space repellers up to 20 feet apart.
Diagram Description: A visual representation shows an outdoor space with designated zones for protection. It illustrates placing repellers around a patio and along a fence line, indicating the Smart Hub connected to an outdoor outlet.
INSTALL
Step 1: Map It Out
Use the provided grid to plan your system's layout. Consider the location of your outdoor outlet, where you will place each repeller, preferred mounting methods, and how cables will be routed. Repellers offer 360-degree protection; for optimal results, place them within 10 feet of frequently used areas. For continuous protection, maintain a distance of up to 20 feet between repellers.
Diagram Description: A grid is shown, intended for users to sketch their outdoor space and mark the placement of the Smart Hub and repellers, along with cable routes.
Step 2: Mount the Hub
Locate the Smart Hub near an outdoor outlet in an area with a strong Wi-Fi signal. Verify Wi-Fi strength with your smartphone before proceeding. Once signal strength is confirmed, mount the hub to a wall, post, or stake. Ensure it is no more than 6 feet from the power outlet and at least 30 inches off the ground to protect it from water and snow. Use the provided template to mark and drill holes for the two mounting screws, then hang the hub.
Note: If mounting on brick or masonry, use appropriate concrete anchors and drill bits.

Step 3: Lay It All Out
Position each repeller according to your installation plan from Step 1. Lay out the connecting cables between the repellers to ensure you have sufficient length to navigate around any obstacles.
Diagram Description: A visual shows repellers and cables laid out on the ground in a planned configuration.
Step 4: Mount the Repellers
Choose the appropriate mounting method based on your installation location and hardware:
- Using the Standard Mount: Install directly onto a firm surface. Hold the mount in place, mark hole locations, pre-drill at least two holes, and attach the mount using standard deck screws (not included). Pass the cable through the cutouts and attach the repeller by squeezing the quick-connect tabs.
- Using a Ground Stake: Ideal for soft ground like grass or mulch. Press the stake into the ground until it is flush or slightly above ground level. Twist the standard mount onto the stake. Pass the cable through the cutouts and attach the repeller by squeezing the quick-connect tabs.
- Using a Hardscape Base: Suitable for stone, paver, decking, or other hard surfaces where drilling is not desired. Thread the standard mount to the base until secure. Pass the repeller leads through the center of the base and attach the repeller by squeezing the quick-connect tabs. Route the pigtail connectors on the underside of the base into the cutouts.
Diagram Description: Three illustrations depict the three mounting methods: attaching a repeller to a surface with a standard mount and screws, inserting a repeller onto a ground stake, and attaching a repeller to a hardscape base.
Step 5: Connect the Cables
Connect a cable to the Smart Hub. Remove the protective cap from the cable leads on the first repeller and connect the corresponding end of the cable. Repeat this process for each subsequent repeller in the chain. Leave the cap plug on the remaining cable pigtail of the final repeller. Ensure connectors are threaded finger-tight; do not over-tighten. Avoid bending or stuffing excess cable into the repeller base.
Diagram Description: An illustration shows how to connect the cables between the Smart Hub and repellers, highlighting the connectors.
CONNECT
Step 6: Test Your System
Plug in the Smart Hub. Check the underside; the Status LED should blink blue if connected to power. Press the center power button; the ring around it should illuminate. Verify that each repeller's lights begin to flash in a chasing pattern. Within five minutes, the lights should turn solid blue. Turn off the system by pressing the power button. Proceed with the final cable installation.
Diagram Description: A sequence of illustrations shows plugging in the hub, checking the status LED and power button light, and observing the repeller lights changing from flashing to solid blue. It also shows pressing the power button to turn the system off.
Step 7: Secure the Cables
Complete your installation by routing and securing all cables. This prevents damage, avoids tripping hazards, and ensures a professional appearance. Common methods include:
- Burial: Use a shovel or edging tool to create a 1-2 inch deep trench. Lay the cable in the trench and cover it with dirt.
- Run Above Ground: Tuck cables along the edges of decking or pathways, or secure them with landscape staples or cable hooks.
- Cover with Mulch: Lay cables and cover them with at least 2 inches of mulch.
Diagram Description: Three illustrations show different methods for securing cables: burying them in a shallow trench, running them along the edge of a deck, and covering them with mulch.
Important Note: Before digging, locate any underground pipes, cables, irrigation systems, or gas lines. Call utility locating services (e.g., Dig Safe) before you dig.
Step 8: Insert the Repellent Cartridges
To insert repellent cartridges:
- Remove the repeller hood by twisting it 1/4 turn counter-clockwise.
- Open a repellent cartridge by twisting the blue top counter-clockwise. Avoid touching the wick.
- Align the tabs on the cartridge with the tabs on the repeller. Slide the cartridge up into place until it clicks.
- Replace the repeller hood.
Note: The repeller hood has a set screw at the bottom that can lock it in place to prevent unintended access to the cartridge. Use a 1.5mm Allen wrench to back out the screw just enough to lock the hood.
Diagram Description: Illustrations show removing the repeller hood, opening a repellent cartridge, and inserting the cartridge into the repeller.
Step 9: Download the App
Maximize your system's capabilities by downloading the LIV+ app. The app allows you to connect your system to your home's Wi-Fi network, enabling remote control, scheduling of automatic on/off times, customization of repeller lights, and integration with your smart home system for voice commands.
