Setup: Using One of Three Methods

Prepare the transmitter using one of the following methods:

Proceed to Transmitter Operation to turn the unit on and apply tone to the cable. Refer to Receiver Operation to prepare the receiver and locate the cable. For passive power locating, go directly to Receiver Operation.

For detailed locating instructions and advanced techniques, consult the publication "Cable and Pipe Locating Techniques" available from your 3M sales representative.

Transmitter Set Up: Direct Connect Method

Description: This method involves directly connecting the transmitter to the cable.

Diagram Description: A diagram shows the transmitter connected via a red clip to the cable shield and a black clip to a ground rod inserted into the earth. The ground rod is positioned at a 90-degree angle to the suspected cable path. A note indicates not to connect ground to water pipes or other services to avoid misleading signals.

Caution: Check for stray voltages before attaching the transmitter. Voltages higher than 240 volts (AC/DC) can damage equipment. Follow standard procedures for reducing voltage.

  1. With the transmitter off, plug the direct connect cable into the transmitter's front panel jack.
  2. Connect the black clip to the ground rod.
  3. Place the ground rod in the earth, as far as the leads allow from the near end connection, at a 90-degree angle to the suspected cable path.
  4. Remove the near-end shield bond and connect the red clip to the shield.

Transmitter Set Up: Induction Method

Description: This method involves placing the transmitter over the target cable.

Diagram Description: A diagram shows the transmitter placed on the ground over the suspected cable path, with its lid hinge aligned with the cable. Connections for near end ground and tone are indicated.

  1. Place the transmitter on the ground over the target cable with the lid hinge in line with the cable path.

Transmitter Set Up: Dyna-Coupler Method

(Optional Accessories Required)

Description: This method uses a Dyna-Coupler accessory to apply the tone to the cable.

Diagram Description: A diagram illustrates the Dyna-Coupler clamped around a cable, which is connected to the transmitter. A note emphasizes that the coupler jaws must fully close for tone transmission.

  1. Plug the Dyna-Coupler into the cable (optional accessories). Plug the cable into the transmitter front panel jack.
  2. Clamp the Dyna-Coupler around the cable below any bonds, just before the cable enters the earth. Ensure the Dyna-Coupler jaws are fully closed.

Transmitter Operation

Transmitter Front Panel Controls:

  1. Battery Test: Hold down the [Off] button for Battery Test. A solid tone indicates good batteries; a beeping tone indicates low batteries; no tone indicates the need to replace batteries.
  2. Turn On and Continuity Test: Press the [On] button to turn the unit on and select Continuity Test. A solid tone indicates a good ground; a beeping tone indicates a usable ground; no tone indicates a poor ground or no far end ground. Both LEDs remain lit during the continuity test.
  3. Apply Tracing Tone: Press the [Freq] button to apply tracing tone and select the desired frequency (577 Hz for direct connect with far end ground; 33 KHz for direct connect with no far end ground, or for use with coupler or induction). The LED indicates the selected frequency. This button can also turn the unit on.
  4. Change Output Level: Press the [Output Level] button to change the output level. Use Normal output (flashing LED) for locating short to moderate distances with the direct connect method. Use High output (solid LED) for coupler, induction, or direct connect for long distances.
  5. Turn Off: When locating is complete, press the [Off] button to turn the unit off.

Receiver Operation

Receiver Front Panel Controls:

  1. Turn On and Battery Level Check: Press the [On] button to turn the receiver on and view the battery level. Hold down for a continuous Battery Test. If the bar graph is to the left of the battery level mark, replace the batteries. Note: The battery test indicator remains on when batteries are low.
  2. Frequency Matching: Press the [Freq] button to match the receiver's frequency to the transmitter's output or to select for passive power locating.
  3. Gain Adjustment: Press the [Gain Adjust] button to set the gain when the bar graph is not visible or is closed. For high volume, hold down the [Gain Adjust] button while turning the unit on. To return to normal volume, turn the unit off and then on again.
  4. Broad Sweeps: Make broad sweeps with the receiver handle aligned with the target cable path to achieve maximum bar graph closure. Press the [Freq] button. Maximum bar graph and numeric indication occur directly over the cable.
  5. Depth and Current Measurement: Place the receiver upright directly over the cable. With the handle parallel to the path, press the [Depth] button to display the estimated depth. Press again to display the numeric Current indication. The cable with the highest current indication is the target. Press the [Freq] button to return to trace mode. The unit automatically returns to trace mode after eight seconds.

Note: The depth measured by an Active Duct Probe (sonde) may differ from the cable depth due to the shape of its electromagnetic field. Conversion tables provided with the ADP can be used to obtain accurate depth estimates.

Battery Installation

The receiver uses 6 'C' cells. The transmitter uses 6 'AA' cells.

Diagram Description: Illustrations show the placement of 6 'C' cells and 6 'AA' cells within the respective devices.
