The screen displays "DESCALING IN PROGRESS, PLEASE WAIT": the descaling program starts, and the descaling solution flows from both the hot water dispenser and coffee dispenser, automatically performing a series of rinsing processes at intervals to remove scale residues from the machine.
After approximately 15 minutes, descaling stops.
- "RINSE AND FILL WITH WATER TO MAX LEVEL": the machine is now ready for a fresh water rinse cycle. Empty the container used for descaling solution, remove the water tank, empty it, rinse it with tap water, fill it to MAX level with fresh water, and reinsert it into the machine.
- "PLACE 2L CONTAINER, OK TO START RINSE": Place the empty container used for descaling solution under the coffee and hot water spouts and press "Ok ✓".
- Hot water flows first from the coffee dispenser and then from the hot water dispenser, and "RINSE IN PROGRESS, PLEASE WAIT" will appear.
- When the water in the tank runs out, empty the container used for rinse water.
- (If filter is installed) "INSERT FILTER IN PLACE": press "Next >" and remove the water tank, then reinsert it if previously removed, and insert the water softener filter.
- "RINSE AND FILL WITH WATER TO MAX LEVEL": fill the water tank with fresh water to the MAX level.
- "INSERT WATER TANK": reinsert the water tank.
- "PLACE 2L CONTAINER, OK TO START RINSE": Place the empty container used for descaling solution under the hot water dispenser and press "Ok ✓".
- Hot water flows from the hot water/steam nozzle, and "RINSE IN PROGRESS, PLEASE WAIT" will appear.
- "EMPTY DRIP TRAY": at the end of the second rinse, empty the container used for rinse water, remove, empty, and reinsert the drip tray (A15) and grounds container (A11): press "Next >".
- "DESCALING COMPLETE": press "Ok ✓".
- "FILL WATER TANK WITH FRESH WATER": remove and fill the water tank with fresh water to the MAX level and reinsert it into the machine.
The descaling operation is now complete.
Note: If the descaling cycle is not completed correctly (e.g., due to power interruption), the machine will request its completion upon next startup. It is normal for water to remain in the grounds container (A11) after descaling. The machine requires a third rinse if the water tank was not filled to the maximum level: this ensures no descaling solution remains in the internal circuits. Before starting the rinse cycle, remember to empty the drip tray.
14. Water Hardness Programming
Descaling will be requested after a preset operating period, which depends on water hardness. If desired, the machine can be programmed according to actual water hardness, thus performing descaling less frequently.
14.1 Measuring Water Hardness
- Remove the supplied "TOTAL HARDNESS TEST" strip (D1) from its packaging.
- Completely immerse the strip in a glass of water for approximately one second.
- Remove the strip from the water and shake it gently. After approximately one minute, 1, 2, 3, or 4 red squares will form, depending on water hardness, each square corresponding to 1 level.
14.2 Setting Water Hardness
- Access the menu, following instructions in "6.1 Accessing the menu".
- Press "WATER HARDNESS".
- Perform the procedure indicated in the previous paragraph and measure water hardness.
- "WATER HARDNESS, CURRENT UNDERLINED": Press the detected level from the previous point, as specified in the following table: (Level 1 = potable water; Level 4 = very hard water).
Reactive Strip | Water Hardness |
---|---|
1 square red | Level 1 = potable water |
2 squares red | Level 2 = slightly hard water |
3 squares red | Level 3 = hard water |
4 squares red | Level 4 = very hard water |
- Press "Esc" to return to the main page. The machine is now reprogrammed according to the new water hardness setting.
15. Water Softener Filter
Some models are equipped with a water softener filter (D4): if your model does not include this filter, we recommend purchasing it from authorized De'Longhi service centers. For correct filter use, follow the instructions below.
15.1 Filter Installation

- "ROTATE DATE INDICATOR TO NEXT 2 MONTHS": remove the new filter (D4) from its packaging and rotate the calendar disc to display the next 2 months of use. Press "Next >".
- "LET WATER FLOW FROM OPENING UNTIL IT EXITS THROUGH SLOTS": to activate the filter, let tap water flow through the central opening of the filter, as indicated in the figure, for at least one minute until water exits through the side openings. Press "Next >".
- Remove the water tank (A17) from the machine and fill it with water.
- "INSERT FILTER, LET AIR OUT": Insert the filter into the water tank and submerge it completely for approximately ten seconds, tilting and gently pressing it to allow air bubbles to escape. Press "Next >".
- "INSERT FILTER IN PLACE": Insert the filter (D4) into its corresponding housing and push it all the way in. Press "Next >".
- "INSERT WATER TANK": Close the water tank with its lid (A16), then reinsert the tank into the machine.
- "PLACE 0.5L CONTAINER TO ACTIVATE FILTER": Place a container under the hot water dispenser (D6) and press "Ok ✓": "HOT WATER. PLEASE WAIT" dispensing starts and stops automatically.
At this point, the filter is active, and the machine can be used.
Note: The filter lasts two months if the machine is used normally. If the machine remains unused with the filter installed, it lasts a maximum of 3 weeks.
