Grundfos SQ/SQE Data Book
A New Standard in Submersible Pumps
SQ/SQE Features and Benefits
The SQ/SQE submersible pumps are designed for both continuous and intermittent operation, suitable for a variety of applications including domestic water supply, small waterworks, irrigation, and tank applications.
Key features of SQ/SQE pumps include:
- Dry-Run protection
- High efficiency pump and motor
- Excellent wear resistance and sand handling capabilities
- Protection against up-thrust
- Soft-start
- Over-voltage and under-voltage protection
- Overload protection
- Over-temperature protection
- High starting torque
Additionally, SQE pumps offer:
- Constant pressure control
- Variable speed
- Electronic control and communication
The SQ and SQE pump models feature a new motor design utilizing permanent-magnet technology, delivering unmatched performance. Combined with Grundfos's micro frequency converter, these pumps offer advanced control capabilities like Constant Pressure Control and Soft-Start, along with integrated Dry-Run protection.
The SQ models operate at a constant speed, similar to conventional pumps, but benefit from an electronically controlled permanent-magnet motor. They are available for single-phase power and feature a simple 2-wire design for easy installation.
The SQE models utilize the Grundfos "Smart Motor", which allows for communication via the CU300 status box through the power leads. This enables features like Constant Pressure Control and the ability to adjust pump performance while the pump is installed. The "Smart Motor" can operate without the CU300, but some advanced functions will be unavailable.
The CU300 provides full control of SQE pumps. It indicates alarms with a front panel light and, when used with the R100 remote control, allows for system monitoring and troubleshooting, recalling the last five causes of failure.

Dry-Run Protection: The SQ and SQE pumps have integrated dry-run protection. If the water level falls below the pump inlet, the pump shuts off. After a period, it will automatically restart. For SQ pumps, the cut-off level is factory-set. For SQE pumps, the level is set using a CU300 and R100.
High Motor Efficiency: The permanent-magnet rotor design provides high efficiency across a wide load range. This allows for fewer motor sizes to cover a broad horsepower range.
High Pump Efficiency: Pumps are constructed from a 30% glass-filled engineered composite, designed for peak efficiency, reducing overall power consumption.
Excellent Wear Resistance: "Floating" impellers with tungsten carbide/ceramic bearings ensure high wear resistance, even in sandy conditions.
Protection against up-thrust: A top bearing is incorporated to protect the pump and motor from up-thrust during start-up.
Soft-Start: Integrated electronics provide a soft start, reducing starting current and ensuring smooth acceleration.
High Starting Torque: The permanent-magnet motor provides excellent starting capabilities, with locked rotor torque 1.5 times greater than conventional motors, maintaining high torque even at low voltages.
Overvoltage and Undervoltage Protection: Integrated protection prevents motor damage when voltage falls outside the permissible range. The 230V pump cuts out below 150V or above 280V and restarts automatically when voltage is within range.
Overload Protection: The motor automatically adjusts speed to maintain maximum amp level. If speed drops to 65%, the motor shuts off.
Overtemperature Protection: Permanent-magnet motors emit minimal heat due to high efficiency. An internal circulation system cools motor components. An electronic unit with a temperature sensor provides additional protection, shutting off the motor if it overheats and restarting when cooled.
Reliability: Designed to withstand tough applications with features like tungsten carbide/ceramic bearings and thrust bearings for up-thrust protection. Product lifetime is equal to or greater than conventional AC motors and 4" pumps.
Variable Speed: The SQE "Smart Motor" allows continuous variable speed control (65%-100%, 7000-10700 rpm). The pump can be set to any duty point within the pump's performance curve. This requires the CU300 and R100. A "SQE Speed Calculation" program is available for assistance.
Installation: SQ and SQE pumps can be installed vertically or horizontally. Note: the pump must not fall below the horizontal level relative to the motor. Features include a built-in spring-loaded check valve, light weight for easy installation, and suitability for 3" or larger wells. For horizontal installation, a flow sleeve is recommended for sufficient cooling and to prevent burial in sand or mud.
Service: Modular design allows for easy repair and service. The motor lead is also replaceable.
Applications
SQ with Pressure Switch and Diaphragm Tank
The SQ pump is ideal for domestic water supply, offering ease of sale, installation, and operation.
Replacement in Existing Installation: SQ and SQE pumps can replace existing 4" submersible pumps, providing an upgrade to a more advanced system, potentially including constant pressure control.

SQE with Constant Pressure Control
Function and Benefits: Constant pressure control provides "city-like" water pressure. A flow switch starts the pump when a tap is opened, and a preset pressure is maintained via a pressure sensor and the CU300. The pump stops when flow ceases. If consumption is below 0.8 gpm, the CU300 starts the pump when pressure drops 7 psi below the set-point and stops it when pressure is 7 psi above the set-point. For consumption above 0.8 gpm, the CU300 maintains pressure within 3 psi of the set-point.
Constant pressure control reduces pressure variations and allows for smaller tanks (as small as 2 gallons). Pump operation adjusts automatically as filters become plugged.

- Ability to start and stop the pump with a button press
Communication with the pump occurs via the power leads, eliminating the need for extra cables.
