Mounting Location

Amplifiers are generally mounted in the hatch/trunk area of a car or SUV, and under or behind the seat of most pick-up trucks. Select a location that will provide adequate ventilation for the amplifier. Avoid mounting the amplifier with the fins down. The fins should be facing up either vertically or horizontally. Secure the amplifier with the screws provided.

Before securing the amplifier, inspect the mounting location carefully to ensure that you do not drill into or damage any electrical, hydraulic, fluid or fuel lines.

WARNING: Make sure you choose a suitable place to mount the unit. The position should be completely dry with a good circulation of air, and from a mechanical point of view very stable.

(Spanish: ADVERTENCIA: Asegúrese de elegir un lugar adecuado para montar la unidad. La posición debe estar completamente seca con una buena circulación de aire, y desde un punto de vista mecánico muy estable.)

Fuse and Circuit Breaker Recommendation

WARNING: We highly recommend that an in-line fuse or circuit breaker be installed within 18" of the battery. Although your amplifier has adequate internal protection, it is possible a damaged wire between the component and the battery may result in a fire. The in-line fuse or circuit breaker should be installed in a location that is easy to access, and all wiring should be routed safely, following the below suggestions:

Installation Instructions

  1. Before you start, disconnect the negative cable from the car battery. Tape up the end so it is isolated from the battery.
  2. Run an appropriate gauge wire from the battery to the amplifier. Plan this part of the installation carefully. This cable will carry very high current; if it should short to the body and it is not properly fused, it could catch fire.
  3. Connect the power wire to the battery using a fuse capable of the total current load of all amplifiers connected. Don't install the fuse yet. Wait until the end. Locate the fuse as close as possible to the battery. If the fuse is further than 18 inches (wire length) from the battery, you should reevaluate the wire and fuse placement.
  4. Find the closest clear metal area to the amp for a ground. Sand, grind or scrape all paint and undercoating from the body and screw the ground securely in place. It is advisable to test the ground with an ohm meter between the ground cable and the negative battery cable to ensure a good low resistance connection. Some panels used in modern cars do not offer the best ground. If you believe this is the case - first consult with the vehicle manufacturer.
  5. Run the speaker wire to the speakers. It is advised that you leave some extra wire at this point. You can fix it later.
  6. If you haven't done so already, mount the amp now.
  7. Connect the power and ground to the amplifier. ONLY AFTER THIS STEP - SHOULD YOU INSTALL THE FUSE AT THE BATTERY.
  8. Connect the remote wire from the head unit to the amplifier. Now is a good time to turn on the amp for the first time. Make sure it turns on properly and does not go into protection mode.
  9. Connect the speaker wires to the amp and speakers (make sure the amp is off first). Make sure the polarity (+) and (-) is correct.
  10. Connect the RCA's to the amp.
  11. Double check the amplifier controls at this time. Make sure everything is set correctly for your system.
  12. Now you're ready to play it for the first time. It is best to leave the gain all the way down at first. Start with the head unit volume low and work your way up.
  13. Now you can tune the amp. Take your time and make only one adjustment at a time. It may take some time to get the system fully adjusted. During this time the amp is drawing current from the battery. You should check the battery voltage from time to time and recharge it, if it gets low.

That's it. You're done. Now have fun.

Power Connections Diagram Description

The diagrams illustrate the amplifier's power connections. This includes connecting the main power wire (12V) from the battery (with an in-line fuse or circuit breaker located within 18 inches of the battery) to the amplifier's +12V terminal. The ground wire (GND) should be connected to a clean metal chassis point on the vehicle. The remote turn-on wire (REM) connects from the head unit's remote/antenna output to the amplifier's REM terminal. These diagrams show the terminal locations on the amplifier and the typical placement of the fuse near the battery.

Speaker Output Connection Diagram Description

Diagrams show speaker connections for Mono Block amplifiers (H-KO2, H-KO3, H-KO5, H-KO8, H-KO10) and 4-Channel amplifiers (H-KO340). For mono block amps, speaker connections are typically made to a single set of terminals. For 4-channel amps, connections are shown for Stereo Mode (using separate channels for front/rear or pairs of speakers) and Bridge Mode (combining channels for higher power output to a single speaker or subwoofer). Wiring configuration examples are provided for achieving specific impedance loads (e.g., 1 ohm, 2 ohm, 4 ohm) by connecting multiple speakers in series or parallel.

Controls and Adjustments

Amplifier Panel Controls

The amplifier panels feature various controls and indicators. These include:

Remote Level Control

The remote level control allows adjustment of the subwoofer volume from a remote location. It typically includes a knob and a CLIP indicator.

Setting the Gains

Setting the amplifier gain is crucial for optimal performance and to prevent distortion or damage. The gain control is not a volume knob; it matches the amplifier's input sensitivity to the source unit's output voltage. It should be set carefully to avoid clipping, which can cause overheating and speaker damage. The process involves setting the gain to match the source unit's voltage output (e.g., 0.25V, 4V, 6V) and then fine-tuning it to avoid the CLIP indicator lighting up during playback.

Bass Boost Control

The monoblock amplifiers feature a variable bass boost control centered at 45Hz. You can adjust the amount of boost from 0dB to 12dB. The frequency response graph illustrates how bass boost affects the audio output.

Speaker Outputs

Mono Block Speaker Connection

For mono block amplifiers (H-KO2, H-KO3, H-KO5, H-KO8, H-KO10), speaker connections are made to the designated speaker terminals. The minimum impedance for these amplifiers is typically 1 ohm.

4 Channels Speaker Connection (Stereo Mode)

For the H-KO340 4-channel amplifier in Stereo Mode, speaker outputs are connected to channels 1 & 2 and channels 3 & 4 separately. The impedance range is typically 2Ω-8Ω per channel.

4 Channels Speaker Connection (Bridge Mode)

In Bridge Mode for the H-KO340, channels 1 & 2 are bridged, and channels 3 & 4 are bridged, allowing for higher power output to individual speakers or subwoofers. The impedance range is typically 4Ω-8Ω for bridged connections.

Wiring Configuration Examples

The manual provides examples for wiring multiple speakers to achieve specific impedance loads. For instance, dual/doble configurations are shown for 1 ohm, 2 ohm, and 4 ohm loads, indicating how speakers should be wired in series or parallel.

Strap Mode Connection

This feature allows linking two amplifiers together for increased power output.

Input Connection

  1. Connect the master amplifier to the head-unit and set its output master / input slave switch to 'output master'.
  2. Set the slave amplifier's output master / input slave switch to 'slave input'.
  3. Connect an RCA cable from the master amplifier's RCA output to the slave amplifier's RCA input.

Speaker Connection

  1. Connect the positive (+) speaker cable from the master amplifier to the subwoofer's positive (+) terminal.
  2. Connect the positive (+) speaker cable from the slave amplifier to the subwoofer's negative (-) terminal.
  3. Connect the negative (-) speaker cable from the master amplifier to the negative (-) speaker cable of the slave amplifier.

Diagram Description: The diagram visually depicts the master and slave amplifier setup, showing the RCA link between them and the speaker connection to a subwoofer. It highlights the signal flow from the head unit to the master amp, then to the slave amp, and finally to the subwoofer.

Important: Minimum strappable working impedance is 2 ohms. Lower than 1 ohm can damage the amplifier. Working voltage: 9V to 16 Volts.

Troubleshooting

Amplifier Won't Power Up

High Hiss or Engine Noise (Alternator Whine) in Speakers

Disconnect all RCA inputs to the amplifier. If hiss noise disappears, then plug in the component driving the amplifier and unplug its inputs. If hiss noise disappears, go on until the faulty/noisy component is found. It is best to set the amplifier input level as insensitive as possible. The best subjective S/N ratio is obtainable this way. Try to drive as high a signal level from the head unit as possible.

Protection LED Comes On When the Amplifier is Powered Up

Amplifier Gets Very Hot

Distorted Sound

High Squeal Noise from Speakers

This is always caused by a poorly grounded RCA wire.
