DS18 CANDY Series Amplifiers Owner's Manual
This manual provides instructions for the installation, functions, and controls of the DS18 CANDY Series digital monoblock and multi-channel amplifiers. The series includes models such as CANDY-X1B, CANDY-X2B, CANDY-X4B, CANDY-XXL4B, CANDY-X5B, and CANDY-XXL1B.
These amplifiers are designed using the latest electronic technology to provide high-quality stereo playback in mobile applications, offering low harmonic distortion, considerable reserve voltage, and high temperature stability.
Instructions for Functions and Controls
The amplifiers feature various controls and connection terminals. Key controls include:
- HIGH INPUT: High-level input terminals. Features Auto Turn-On/Off functionality, activating the amplifier when an audio signal is detected.
- LOW INPUT: Low-level input terminals for connecting to a source's pre-amplifier outputs.
- GAIN: Adjusts the volume level.
- BASS BOOST: Adjusts the bass boost level, typically ranging from 0dB to 18dB.
- BASS BOOST FREQUENCY: Sets the frequency for the bass boost.
- LPF (Low Pass Filter): Adjusts the low-pass filter frequency, typically ranging from 50Hz to 150Hz.
- HPF (High Pass Filter): Adjusts the high-pass filter frequency, typically ranging from 40Hz to 250Hz.
- X-OVER: Switches for selecting filter types (HPF, LPF, FULL).
- PHASE CONTROL: Adjusts the phase from 0° to 180°.
- REMOTE CONTROLLER OUTLET/BOX: Connects to a remote level controller for gain adjustment.
- INDICATOR LIGHT: A blue light indicates the amplifier is on and functioning; a red light indicates the protection mode is active.
- GND: Ground terminal, to be connected to the vehicle chassis.
- REM: Remote turn-on terminal, requires 10-15V DC.
- +12V: Power input terminal, to be connected to the vehicle battery anode.
- FUSE: Standard automatic fuse. Use the same type of fuse for replacement.
- SPEAKER: Speaker connection terminals.
System Wiring Diagrams
The manual includes detailed wiring diagrams for various configurations:
- 2 Speaker Configuration (CANDY-X1B / XXLIB)
- Single Speaker Configuration (CANDY-X1B / XXLIB)
- 2 Channels Stereo Configuration (CANDY-X2B)
- Bridged Mode Configuration (CANDY-X2B)
- 4 Channels Stereo Configuration (CANDY-X4B / CANDY-XXL4B)
- 3 Channels Bridged Mode Configuration (CANDY-X4B / CANDY-XXL4B)
- 2 Channels Bridged Mode Configuration (CANDY-X4B)
- 5 Channels Stereo Configuration (CANDY-X5B)
These diagrams illustrate connections from the source unit to the amplifier and from the amplifier to the speakers, including power and ground connections. They also specify speaker impedance requirements for different setups.
Troubleshooting
The manual provides troubleshooting guidance for common issues:
- Amplifier Will Not Power Up: Check ground connection, remote DC terminal voltage, battery power, fuses, and protection LED status.
- High Hiss or Engine Noise: Disconnect RCA inputs to isolate the noise source. Adjust amplifier input level for optimal signal-to-noise ratio.
- Protection LED Comes On: Check for speaker lead shorts, ensure the head unit volume is low, and reset the amplifier. The amplifier may also shut down if its temperature exceeds 85°C.
- Amplifier Gets Very Hot: Verify minimum speaker impedance, check for speaker shorts, and ensure adequate airflow. An external cooling fan might be necessary.
- Distorted Sound: Check level control settings, crossover frequencies, and speaker lead connections.
- High Squeal Noise: Typically caused by a poorly grounded RCA patch cord.
WARNINGS:
- Excessive volume can damage speakers.
- Exercise caution when working near gasoline tanks and electrical wires.
- Protect connecting wires and parts to prevent damage or short circuits.
- Ensure power is supplied from the battery anode via a fuse.
- Turn off the system before checking the amplifier.
- Always use the same type of fuse for replacement.
