Overview
The 8BitDo Retro Receiver for PS allows you to use modern wireless controllers with your original PlayStation (PS1) and PlayStation 2 (PS2) consoles. It supports a wide range of controllers, including those from Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and 8BitDo's own line of controllers.

Note: Firmware updates may be required for optimal compatibility with certain controllers.
Controller Mapping
The following sections detail how buttons on modern controllers map to the functions of the original PS1/PS2 controller.
PS4 / PS5 Controller Mapping
Controller Layout: The PS4/PS5 controller features a D-pad, two analog sticks (Left Stick, Right Stick), face buttons (△, ○, ×, □), shoulder buttons (L1, R1), triggers (L2, R2), a touchpad button, Options button, Share button, and PS button.
Mapping to PS1/PS2:
- D-pad: Maps to PS1/PS2 D-pad
- Left Stick: Maps to PS1/PS2 Left Analog Stick
- Right Stick: Maps to PS1/PS2 Right Analog Stick
- △ (Triangle): Maps to PS1/PS2 △

Xbox One / Xbox Series / Xbox Elite Controller Mapping
Controller Layout: Xbox controllers feature a D-pad, two analog sticks (Left Stick, Right Stick), face buttons (A, B, X, Y), shoulder buttons (LB, RB), triggers (LT, RT), View button, Menu button, and Xbox button.
Mapping to PS1/PS2:

Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Mapping
Controller Layout: The Switch Pro Controller features a D-pad, two analog sticks (Left Stick, Right Stick), face buttons (A, B, X, Y), shoulder buttons (L, R), triggers (ZL, ZR), +, -, Home, and Capture buttons.
Mapping to PS1/PS2:
- D-pad: Maps to PS1/PS2 D-pad

Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons Mapping
Controller Layout: Each Joy-Con has a D-pad (on the left) or face buttons (on the right), an analog stick, shoulder buttons (L/R), and triggers (ZL/ZR). The left Joy-Con has +, -, Home buttons. The right Joy-Con has A, B, X, Y buttons and SL/SR buttons.
Mapping to PS1/PS2 (using a single Joy-Con or both):
When used individually, mappings are similar to the Switch Pro Controller, with specific buttons assigned to PS1/PS2 functions. For example, the Left Joy-Con's D-pad and Left Stick map to PS1/PS2 D-pad and Left Analog Stick respectively. The face buttons on the Right Joy-Con (A, B, X, Y) map to PS1/PS2 (×, ○, □, △).
Note: For full functionality and analog input, it is recommended to use two Joy-Cons in a grip or a Switch Pro Controller.
8BitDo M30 Controller Mapping
Controller Layout: The M30 features a D-pad, two analog sticks (Left Stick, Right Stick), face buttons (A, B, X, Y), shoulder buttons (L, R), and a Mode button.
Mapping to PS1/PS2:
- D-pad: Maps to PS1/PS2 D-pad
- Left Stick: Maps to PS1/PS2 Left Analog Stick
- Right Stick: Maps to PS1/PS2 Right Analog Stick

Controller Layout: These controllers feature a D-pad, two analog sticks (Left Stick, Right Stick), face buttons (A, B, X, Y), shoulder buttons (L, R), triggers (ZL, ZR), Start, Select, and Home/Power buttons.
Mapping to PS1/PS2:

Firmware Update
To ensure compatibility with the latest controllers and features, it is recommended to update the firmware of your Retro Receiver. This is particularly important for controllers like the Xbox Elite Series 2, Xbox Series X|S, PS5 DualSense, and PS4 DualShock 4.
- Visit the official 8BitDo website to download the latest firmware and the firmware update tool.
- Connect the Retro Receiver to your computer using a USB cable.
- Launch the firmware update tool.
- Follow the on-screen instructions within the tool to complete the update process.
During the firmware update process, the status LED on the Retro Receiver will blink rapidly to indicate it is in update mode.
Connection and Pairing
- Connect the 8BitDo Retro Receiver to the controller port of your PS1 or PS2 console.
- Pairing:
- Turn on your wireless controller (e.g., press the Xbox button on an Xbox controller).
- Press and hold the pairing button on the controller for approximately 3 seconds to enter pairing mode. The controller's status indicator will typically blink rapidly.
- The Retro Receiver will automatically detect and pair with the controller.
- Once successfully paired, the status LED on the Retro Receiver will turn solid blue, indicating a stable connection.
