5. Operation
5.1. Display Messages
Upon startup, the display screen and all LEDs illuminate for 0.5 seconds, after which the battery voltage is shown.
5.2. TEST-DISPLAY Button
The TEST-DISPLAY button allows viewing of battery status:
- Digital Display: Shows battery VOLTAGE when not in ENGINE START mode.
- BAT.V (Voltage LED): Indicates battery voltage.
- BATT.% (Battery % LED): Shows the percentage of battery charge connected to the charger's clamps.
- ALTERNATOR (Alternator % LED): Displays the estimated output percentage of the vehicle's charging system. Readings are from 0% to 100%. Readings below 0% (LO) or above 100% (HI) indicate a potential issue requiring a qualified technician's check.
5.3. Battery Type Button
The BAT.TYPE button allows selection of battery types, influencing charging voltages:
- NORMAL LED: Standard charging voltage (7.2V/14.4V/28.8V). Button press does not work during charging.
- GEL LED: GEL battery charging voltage (7.5V/14.5V/29V). Button press does not work during charging.
- AGM LED: AGM battery charging voltage (7.8V/14.8V/29.6V). Button press does not work during charging.
- LITHIUM LED: For charging 12V lithium-ion batteries only, including 4-cell LiFePO4.
5.4. Function Selection Button
The FUNCTION button selects the operating mode:
- CHARGE: Standard charging mode.
- SUPPLY: Provides a stable output to help equipment work normally and for checks/repairs.
- REPAIR: Provides a positive pulse voltage to charge batteries that have been idle or are dead.
5.5. Current Selection Button
The BAT.CURRENT button selects the charging rate:
- Slow: Low current charging gear.
- Middle: Average charging current gear.
- Fast: Fast charging current gear.
5.6. Engine Start Button
The START ENGINE button provides additional amps for cranking an engine with a weak or run-down battery. The engine starter time can be adjusted from 5 to 15 seconds using the INCREASE/DECREASE buttons.
WARNING: Always use in combination with a battery. Do NOT touch or disconnect clamps when ENGINE START mode is active, as this may cause serious injury to people or property.
5.7. Connecting to the Battery
- Identify battery posts: positive (+) and negative (-).
- DO NOT make connections to the carburetor, fuel lines, or thin metal parts.
- Identify vehicle grounding: check which battery post is connected to the chassis.
- For negative grounded vehicles (most common): connect the RED POSITIVE clamp first to the positive battery terminal, then connect the BLACK NEGATIVE clamp to the negative battery terminal or vehicle chassis.
- For positive grounded vehicles (uncommon): connect the BLACK NEGATIVE clamp first to the negative battery terminal, then connect the RED POSITIVE clamp to the positive battery terminal or vehicle chassis.
- When disconnecting, reverse the sequence, removing the negative clamp first (or positive first for positive ground systems).
- Marine (boat) batteries must be removed and charged on shore.
5.8. Operating Steps (Charging)
- Ensure battery connection (connect 6V/12V battery to the 6V/12V terminal, and 24V battery to the 24V terminal). Digital display shows connected battery voltage.
- Start the machine (ON/OFF).
- Check battery voltage type (6V, 12V, 24V).
- Check charge current (SLOW, MIDDLE, FAST).
- Check battery type (NORMAL, GEL, AGM, 12V-LITHIUM).
- Check function mode (CHARGE, SUPPLY, REPAIR).
- Stop or start operation.
The charging process involves several stages indicated by LEDs and the digital display, including Analyzing, Desulphation, Controlled Current Charge, Constant Output Charge, Recovery Cycle Charge, Absorption, and Maintenance.
5.9. Engine Start Function
This function can be used to jump-start a car with a low battery. Follow all safety instructions and precautions. Wear complete eye protection and protective clothing.
Procedure
- Ensure battery connection. Digital display shows connected battery voltage.
- Start machine (ON/OFF).
- Select the engine start button and set the start time using INCREASE/DECREASE buttons.
- Stop or start the operation.
Warning: Using the ENGINE START feature WITHOUT a battery installed in the vehicle will damage the vehicle's electrical system.
NOTE: During extremely cold weather, or if the battery is under 2 volts, charge the battery for 5 minutes before cranking. Crank the engine for up to 3 seconds. If the engine does not start, wait 3 minutes before cranking again to allow the charger and battery to cool down. If the engine fails to start, use the BOOST rate to charge for 5 minutes before attempting to crank again. After the engine starts, unplug the AC power cord before disconnecting the battery clamps.
If the engine turns over but never starts, there is a problem elsewhere with the vehicle. STOP cranking until the issue is diagnosed and corrected.
Starting Sequence States:
- Wait for cranking: Display shows START-READY. The charger waits for the engine to be cranked before delivering amps. Press the remote button before cranking, or the charger will detect it automatically.
- Cranking: Charger delivers maximum output for up to 5 times (15 seconds).
- Cool Down: Charger enters a mandatory 240-second cool-down state. No buttons work. Display shows countdown. After 4 minutes, it shows START-READY.
5.10. Voltage Tester and Charger
When first turned on, the unit operates as a tester. If the "TEST" function is used, stop the "FUNCTION" mode. Select the "TEST" button to detect and view the connected battery voltage and charge level. Note: The battery tester is designed only for batteries; testing devices with rapidly changing voltage may yield inaccurate results.
5.11. Alternator Check
- With the charger unplugged from the AC outlet, connect it to the battery as per previous instructions.
- Plug the charger AC power cord into the AC outlet.
- Start the vehicle and turn on the vehicle's headlights. Read the digital display. A reading of "0-100%" indicates a properly working alternator. "LO" or "HI" readings suggest the charging system needs checking by a qualified technician.
NOTE: When first turned on, the unit operates only as a tester, not as a charger. The charger must stop charging.
