1. Introduction
Welcome to the Engwe LE20! This manual will guide you through the setup, operation, and maintenance of your new electric bike.
1.1 Packing List
The package typically includes the following components:
- Front Axle Assembly
- Charger
- Allen Wrenches (M4, M5, M6)
- Screwdriver
- Saddle and Seat Post
- Folding Handlebar and Stem
- Fenders (Front and Rear)
- 2x Folding Pedals

1.2 Components
Familiarize yourself with the main parts of your Engwe LE20:
- Frame Body: The main structure of the bicycle.
- Front Fork with Suspension: Houses the front wheel and provides shock absorption.
- Front Wheel: Includes the tire, rim, and brake mechanism.
- Handlebar: For steering, equipped with controls and grips.
- Stem: Connects the handlebar to the fork, often adjustable or folding.
- Seat Post and Saddle: For rider support, adjustable for height.
- Rear Wheel: Includes tire, rim, chainring, derailleur, and rear brake.
- Motor: Integrated into the rear wheel hub (or other location depending on model).
- Battery: Detachable power source, typically located on the frame.
- Fenders: Protect from mud and water spray.
- Pedals: For manual propulsion.
- Brakes: Front and rear brakes for stopping.
- Lights: Front and rear lights for visibility.
- Display Panel: Shows speed, battery level, assist mode, and other information.
1.3 Functions
The display panel and controls offer various functions:
- Power On/Off: Press and hold the power button (usually marked with a power symbol or 'M' button) for 3 seconds to turn the bike on or off.
- Assist Level Adjustment: Use the '+' and '-' buttons to increase or decrease the electric assist level.
- Walk Assist Mode: Press and hold the '-' button for a few seconds to activate walk assist (approx. 6 km/h). The display will show a walk assist icon. Release the button to stop.
- Headlight Switch: Press and hold the headlight button (often the '+' button) for 3 seconds to turn the headlight on or off. A headlight icon will appear on the display when active.
- Riding Data Display: The default display shows real-time speed and trip distance. Short press the 'M' button to cycle through: Trip distance (TRIP), Odometer (ODO), Average Speed (AVG), Maximum Speed (MAX), Ride Time (TIME), and Power (PWR).
- Turn Signal Switch: Press the turn signal buttons (if equipped) briefly to activate/deactivate turn signals. The corresponding indicator will light up on the display.
- Battery Indicator: Shows the remaining battery level. If an auxiliary battery is installed, two bars will be displayed. Low battery levels may be indicated by orange or red colors.
2. Quick Start Guide
Warning: Before installation or disassembly, ensure the system is powered off and cannot be accidentally activated.

2.1 Installation Guide
Follow these steps to assemble your Engwe LE20:
2.1.1 Warning
Ensure all components are securely fastened before riding. Check that the battery is sufficiently charged and take appropriate protective measures for riding.
2.1.2 Unpacking
Carefully unpack all components from the box. Verify that all items listed in the packing list are present.
2.1.3 Control Area
Identify the display panel, buttons, and handlebar controls. Ensure they are clean and accessible.
2.1.4 Front Fender and Headlight Installation
Attach the front fender to the fork. Mount the headlight to the designated position on the fork or frame, securing it with screws (e.g., M5 screws).
2.1.5 Front Wheel Installation
Insert the front wheel into the fork dropouts. Ensure the wheel is centered. Secure the wheel using the quick-release lever or axle nuts. Check that the brake pads align correctly with the rim or rotor.
2.1.6 Saddle and Seat Post Installation and Adjustment
Insert the seat post into the frame's seat tube. Adjust the saddle height to a comfortable position for your leg length. Ensure the seat post quick-release lever is securely fastened. Do not exceed the maximum insertion line marked on the seat post.
2.1.7 Rear Light Installation
Mount the rear light to the rear fender or seat post as indicated. Connect its power cable if separate.
2.1.8 Pedal Installation
Screw the pedals into the crank arms. Remember that the left pedal (L) has a reverse thread and the right pedal (R) has a standard thread. Tighten them securely.
2.1.9 Installation Complete
Congratulations! Your Engwe LE20 is now assembled. Double-check all bolts and connections for tightness.
2.2 How to Remove the Battery
To remove the battery, ensure the bike is off. Use the provided key to unlock the battery mount. Once unlocked, gently slide the battery out of its compartment. Note: The front and rear battery codes must match the key codes to unlock.
2.3 How to Charge
There are two charging methods:
- Charge the battery directly on the frame: Connect the charger to the battery's charging port while it's installed on the bike.
- Remove the battery for charging: Follow the steps in section 2.2 to remove the battery, then connect the charger to the battery's charging port.
Charging Indicators:
- Red indicator light: Charging in progress.
- Green indicator light: Battery fully charged.
Charging Time: Approximately 6-8 hours.
Charger Specifications: 48V 3A.
Important Notes:
- The battery may have a small amount of charge when shipped. Please charge it fully before first use.
- Do not charge in direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.
- Avoid charging the battery when it is completely depleted. Recharge when the battery level is low.
- Do not use unauthorized chargers.
- Ensure the charging port is clean and dry before connecting the charger.
2.4 Quick Operation
- Preparation: After assembly, ensure the battery is sufficiently charged. Adjust the handlebar and saddle to a comfortable riding position. Ensure the quick-release levers for the seat post and handlebar are securely fastened.
- Power On and Lights: Press and hold the power button for 3 seconds to turn on the display. Press and hold the headlight button for 3 seconds to turn on the front headlight. Adjust headlights to illuminate approximately 10 meters ahead. Press the turn signal buttons to activate them if needed.
- Riding: Start pedaling. The electric assist will engage. Use the '+' and '-' buttons to adjust the assist level. For walk assist, press and hold the '-' button.
- Braking: The left lever controls the front brake, and the right lever controls the rear brake. For safe braking, apply the rear brake first, then the front brake. Avoid sudden braking with the front brake alone, as this can destabilize the bike.
- Parking: Ensure the bike is parked on a level surface.
2.5 Display Settings
Access the settings menu by pressing the 'M' button multiple times. Use the '+' and '-' buttons to navigate and adjust parameters. Press and hold 'M' for 3 seconds to save settings and exit.
- Backlight Brightness: Adjusts screen brightness (01=dimmest, 05=brightest).
- Units (Metric/Imperial): Switch between km/h and mph. Select "km / mile" and press 'M'.
- Auto Off: Set the time (00-90 minutes) after which the display will automatically turn off if inactive. '00' means no auto-off. Default is 5 minutes.
- Wheel Size: Adjust the wheel diameter setting (1-32 inches). Default is 23 inches. It is not recommended to change this setting unless necessary.
- Speed Limit: Sets the maximum assisted speed. Default is 25 km/h (EU version) or 28 mph (US version). The EU version cannot be changed. The US version can be adjusted, but speeds above 28 mph are invalid.
- Auto Light: When activated, the headlight turns on automatically in dark conditions.
- System Info: Displays software and hardware information. Not recommended for users to modify.
- Battery Info: Shows battery status and information.
- Power-on Password: Enable or disable a password required to turn on the bike. If enabled, you can set a new password by selecting digits and adjusting values with '+' and '-'.
2.6 How to Connect the Engwe App
1. Download the App: Search for "Engwe" in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and download it to your smartphone.
2. Bluetooth Pairing:
- Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your smartphone.
- Turn on your Engwe LE20 electric bike.
- Open the Engwe app and navigate to the Bluetooth connection page.
- Select your bike model (e.g., ENGWE-xxxx) from the list.
- Tap "Connect" to establish the connection.
- Once connected, the app will display riding data and allow access to features.
3. Using the App:
- Start Riding: Click the "Start" button to begin recording your ride. The app will track your route on a map.
- Pause/Resume/End: Use the "Pause", "Resume", and "End" buttons to manage your ride recording.
- Display Information: The app interface shows Headlights control, real-time Speed, Battery Level, GPS Signal strength, Bluetooth Connection status, Ride Duration, Distance, Altitude, and Pause/Continue buttons.
- Support: Access FAQs, manuals, and logistics policies. You can also contact Engwe customer service via the app for assistance.
- Feedback: Provide feedback on the app or the electric bike.
3. Maintenance Precautions
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safety of your electric bike.
3.1 Maintenance Precautions
- General Cleaning: Clean the bike with a damp cloth. Do not use high-pressure water jets or submerge the motor in water, as this can cause electrical damage.
- Motor: Keep the motor clean and free from foreign objects. Avoid corrosive gases. Do not strike the motor housing.
- Battery: The lithium battery has a long lifespan, but its life is related to usage. Charge regularly, avoid complete discharge, and do not charge for excessively long periods. If storing for an extended time, charge to about 70%.
- Tires: Check tire pressure regularly (not exceeding 20 psi for this model). Inspect for wear and tear.
- Brakes: Ensure brakes are functioning correctly. Adjust as needed.
- Chain: Keep the chain clean and lubricated.
- Screws and Bolts: Periodically check that all screws and bolts are tightened.
- Lights and Reflectors: Ensure lights are working and reflectors are clean and properly positioned.
- Frame and Fork: Inspect for any signs of damage or cracks.
Note: For complex maintenance or repairs, it is recommended to contact a professional or an authorized Engwe service center.
3.2 Maintenance and Self-Inspection
Perform regular self-inspections:
- Frame and Fork: Check for cracks or damage.
- Brakes: Verify brake lever feel and stopping power.
- Tires: Check pressure and tread wear.
- Chain: Inspect for rust, damage, or excessive slack. Lubricate if necessary.
- Screws and Bolts: Ensure all fasteners are tight.
- Lights: Test front and rear lights.
- Reflectors: Ensure they are clean and correctly positioned.
- Battery: Check for physical damage. Ensure it's securely mounted.
- Pedals and Crankset: Check for looseness.
- Handlebar and Stem: Ensure they are securely fastened and adjusted.
- Seat Post and Saddle: Ensure they are securely fastened and adjusted.

4. Service Guide
4.1 After-Sales Service and Warranty Coverage
Engwe provides a limited warranty for its electric bikes. Please refer to the warranty card for specific details.
Warranty Period:
- Chassis, Folding Parts, Handlebar, Stem, Seat Post: 12 months
- Tires: 6 months
- Core Parts (Brake calipers, brake discs, brake pads, brake levers, transmission, crankset, pedals, saddle, seat post clamp, headset, bottom bracket, chain, derailleur): 12 months
- Electrical Components (Motor, Controller, Battery, Charger, Display, Throttle, Brake sensors, Wiring harness, Lights): 12 months for Motor and Controller, 6 months for Battery and Charger, 3 months for Display, Throttle, Brake sensors, Wiring harness, Lights.
Warranty Description: The warranty covers manufacturing defects and quality issues under normal use. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, unauthorized modifications, normal wear and tear, or improper maintenance. For batteries, the warranty covers defects but not degradation over time. Replacement is subject to inspection by Engwe.
Note: The limited warranty applies only to the original purchaser.
4.2 Warranty Card and Maintenance Records
Keep your warranty card and maintenance records in a safe place. The warranty card contains details about your purchase and the bike's serial number. Maintenance records help track service history and can be useful for warranty claims.
