Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use an impact socket for rims size #17. [Image: Hand using a socket wrench on a car wheel lug nut.]
Step 3
Lift the rear of the car and secure it on jack stands. [Image: Car rear lifted and supported by jack stands.]
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts. [Image: Hand unscrewing wheel bolts.]
❗ AUTODOC Recommendation: To avoid injuries, hold the wheel firmly while unscrewing the mounting bolts. VW Touran 1T3.
Step 5
Remove the wheel. [Image: Rear suspension of a VW Touran with the wheel removed.]
Step 6
Support the suspension arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack. [Image: Rear of a VW Touran lifted by a hydraulic transmission jack, supporting the suspension arm.]
Step 7
Unscrew the lower shock absorber fastener. Use ring-end spanner size 21. [Image: Hand using a combination wrench on the lower shock absorber bolt.]
✔️ AUTODOC Recommendation: VW Touran 1T3 – To avoid injuries, hold the shock absorber firmly when unscrewing the mounting bolts.
Step 8
Treat all joints of the sway bar link with WD-40 spray. [Image: Hand spraying WD-40 onto a suspension joint.]
Step 9

Step 10
Remove the bracket from under the rear arm. [Image: Hand removing a bracket from under the rear arm using a tool.]
✔️ AUTODOC Recommendation: Spring Replacement – VW Touran 1T3. Lower the transmission jack slowly and smoothly to avoid damaging components and fixtures.
Step 11
Attach the spring compressor to the coil spring. [Image: Spring compressor being attached to a coil spring on the car's suspension.]
✔️ AUTODOC Expert Recommendation: Use adapters and spring compressor jaws of the appropriate size. The coil spring coils must be securely fastened to the spring compressor. Use high-quality spring compressors.
Step 12
Compress the spring by turning the lead screw of the spring compressor. Use a ring-end spanner. [Image: Hand using a ring spanner to turn the lead screw of the spring compressor, compressing the spring.]
Step 13
Lower the control arm. Use a crowbar. [Image: Hand using a pry bar to lower the control arm.]
? AUTODOC Tip: The size of the wrench may differ depending on the spring compressor manufacturer. Compress the spring compressor only as much as necessary to create enough space to remove the spring. Do not compress this tool completely: the coils of the spring should not touch each other. ❗ Attention: If the coil spring breaks or slips while under tension, it can lead to injuries.
Step 14
Remove the coil spring along with the spring compressor. [Image: Compressed coil spring being removed from the suspension along with the spring compressor.]
✔️ AUTODOC Recommendation: Do not perform any work on the spring while it is compressed.
