Recommended Procedure
AUTODOC experts recommend the following steps for replacing glow plugs on the VW Jetta Mk6 (162, 163, AV3, AV2):
- The replacement procedure is identical for all glow plugs.
- Wear gloves to protect your hands from hot surfaces.
CARRY OUT REPLACEMENT IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER:
- Open the bonnet.
- Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.
- Before starting work, start the engine and let it warm up to operating temperature.
- Shut off the engine.
- Unscrew the bracket for the engine pipes using a Torx T27 bit and a ratchet wrench.
- Detach the engine wiring harness using a flat screwdriver.
- Detach the engine wiring harness connectors using a flat screwdriver.
- Detach the glow plug wiring connectors using needle nose pliers.
- Clean dirt, dust, and debris from inside the spark plug wells.
- Treat the glow plugs with WD-40 spray.
- Unscrew the glow plugs using the spark plug socket #10 and a torque wrench.
- Clean dirt, dust, and debris from inside the spark plug wells again.
- Remove the glow plugs using the spark plug socket #10 and needle nose pliers.
- Treat the new glow plugs with high-temperature ceramic grease.
- Install new glow plugs into their mounting seats using needle nose pliers.
- Tighten the glow plugs using the spark plug socket #10 and a torque wrench. Tighten to 14 Nm torque.
- Attach the glow plug wiring connectors.
- Treat the engine wiring harness connectors using dielectric grease.
- Attach the engine wiring harness connectors.
- Attach the engine wiring harness.
- Screw in the bracket for the engine pipes using a Torx T27 bit and a torque wrench. Tighten to 7 Nm torque.
- Run the engine for a few minutes to ensure proper operation.
- Shut off the engine.
- Remove the fender protection cover.
- Close the hood.
