Panasonic Video Intercom System Operating Instructions

1. Introduction

Thank you for purchasing a Panasonic product. Please read this document before using the product and save it for future reference. Carefully read the information found in the section titled "For your safety" in particular. This system is an auxiliary system; it is not designed to provide complete protection from property loss. Panasonic will not be held responsible in the event that property loss occurs while this system is in operation. Installation Guide is supplied separately.

1.1 Model Composition

The system is composed of a Main Monitor Station (VL-SV74, VL-MV74) and a Door Station (VL-V524). The VL-SV74 can be configured as an extension monitor. The VL-MV74 is the main monitor.

1.2 Accessory Information

Accessories for installing the main monitor and the doorphone are described in the supplied Installation Guide.

1.4 General Information

In the event of problems, contact your equipment supplier. After removing the product, store, dispose, or recycle packaging as necessary. Note that certain types of packaging may be a suffocation or choking hazard. Available products differ by region. In this document, model number suffixes are omitted unless necessary. Functions listed are for the supplied main monitor; functions for doorphone and lobby station may differ. Design and specifications are subject to change without notice. Illustrations may vary slightly from the actual product.

House Mode and Apartment Mode

The main monitor can be configured for two modes: House mode (stand-alone system) and Apartment mode (connected to a larger system like a VL-V901 lobby station). This document primarily describes House mode operations. Apartment mode operations are detailed in section 12, "VL-V901 Basic Operations", and supplemental information available at https://panasonic.net/cns/pcc/support/intercom/v900.

2. Important Information

2.1 For Your Safety

To prevent severe injury or loss of life or property, and to ensure proper and safe operation, read this section carefully. WARNING: Preventing fire and electric shock. Use only the specified power source. Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the product. Never touch the power plug with wet hands or during an electrical storm. Do not use the product in areas exposed to rain, moisture, steam, oily smoke, or excessive dust. Do not place objects on power cables or allow cables to be pulled or bent. Do not overload power outlets. Never put metal objects inside the product or spill liquid on it. If metal objects enter or the product becomes wet, unplug and contact a service center. Completely insert the power plug; do not use damaged plugs or outlets. Regularly remove dust from the power plug. Unplug if the product emits smoke, an abnormal smell, or unusual noise, or if dropped/damaged. Hold the main body of the power plug when unplugging.

CAUTION: Do not use in unstable areas prone to strong vibrations. Do not put your ear near the speaker, as loud sounds may cause hearing impairment.

2.2 Important Safety Instructions

Follow basic safety precautions to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or personal injury. 1. Do not use near water (e.g., bathtub, wash bowl, kitchen sink, wet basement). 2. Use only the provided power cable. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS.

2.3 For Best Performance

Environment: Keep away from electrical noise generating devices. Do not expose to direct sunlight or heat sources. Do not place in rooms with temperatures below 0 °C or above 40 °C. Avoid damp basements. Do not install in locations with sudden temperature changes to prevent condensation. High electrical fields may cause disturbances.

2.4 Other Important Information

The power plug is the main disconnect device; ensure the power outlet is accessible. Privacy and Rights of Portrait: Consider others' privacy rights when installing or using the doorphone. "Privacy" is the ability to control information disclosure. "Rights of portrait" is the right to prevent unauthorized use of one's image.

Observe legal regulations (data protection, video surveillance) in your country. The main monitor's internal memory records personal information (image recordings). Panasonic is not liable for damages arising from exposure of recorded information. Disclaimer: Recorded data may be altered or deleted due to incorrect operations, static electricity, accidents, or malfunction. Panasonic is not liable for damages resulting from loss or alteration of recorded images. Requesting Repairs: Initialize the monitor/extension monitor before sending for repair to delete all saved information [*1]. Even if not initialized, memory may be cleared during repair. If operations cannot be performed due to malfunction, consult the place of purchase. Note for Product Disposal, Transfer, or Return: This product stores private information. Erase recorded images from memory before disposal, transfer, or return to protect privacy. All recorded images can be erased by initializing the main monitor/extension monitor [*1]. [*1] Main monitor/extension monitor: perform "Factory Setting" in "Initialize settings" (page 22).

Information on Disposal in Other Countries outside the European Union: The symbol [*1] is valid only in the EU. For disposal, contact local authorities or a dealer. Others: The product cannot be used when power fails. Recorded images may be lost due to mishandling, electric shock, or power interruption during use. Panasonic may not be liable for damages due to external factors like power failures. If stopping use, remove the monitor and doorphone from walls to prevent falling.

2.5 For India Only

Declaration of Conformity: The product conforms to E-Waste (Management) Rules regarding reduction of hazardous substances. Hazardous substance content (exemptions listed in SCHEDULE II): Lead (Pb) – not over 0.1%; Cadmium (Cd) – not over 0.01%; Mercury (Hg) – not over 0.1%; Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) – not over 0.1%; Polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) – not over 0.1%; Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) – not over 0.1% by weight.

3. Preparation

3.1 Controls

3.1.1 Doorphone

Doorphone Image Quality: Image quality depends on installation environment, settings, lighting conditions, and time of day. See page 25 for more information.

3.2.1 Main Monitor - Display Information

3.3 Setting the Language, Date and Time

When using the main monitor for the first time, you will be prompted to set language, date, and time. The play lamp lights if settings are not configured.

  1. Press the [Turn On] button to turn on the display.
  2. Press the soft keys under the [▲] and [▼] soft key icons to select the desired language.
  3. Press [OK].
  4. Press [OK] again.
  5. Set the date and time: Press [▲] or [▼] to select an item (year, month, day, etc.). Press [◀] or [▶] to change the setting.
  6. When finished, press [OK]. A beep sounds and the display turns off.

Changing the Language, Date and Time: You can change these settings later by pressing the [Menu] button and navigating to "Initial settings" using the [▲], [▼], and [OK] soft keys.

Note: Date and time settings may be deleted during a power outage. The time may become out of sync by about 60 seconds per month.

3.4 Wide/Zoom Settings and Zoom Position Settings

These functions are not available for the supplied doorphone (VL-V524). They can be used with optional doorphones (page 4). You can configure how doorphone images are initially displayed: in wide mode (default, full camera image) or zoom mode (images zoomed 2 times larger). You can set different options for when visitors call and when monitoring.

Wide Mode (Default Setting): Images are not zoomed. The full camera image is displayed.

Zoom Mode: Images are zoomed, displayed 2 times larger than wide display. Note: Zoom feature uses digital zoom, which may reduce image quality. When images are recorded in zoom mode, only the zoomed area is recorded.

Selecting Wide or Zoom:

  1. Press [Menu] → select "Initial settings" → [OK].
  2. Select "Wide/Zoom settings" → [OK]. If multiple doorphones, select the doorphone to configure → [OK].
  3. Select the desired setting: "When visitors come" (for calls) or "When monitoring" (for monitoring) → [OK].
  4. Select the desired display mode → [OK]. A beep sounds, and settings are changed.
  5. When finished, press [OFF].

Note: If "Zoom" is selected, adjust zoom position so desired objects are centrally displayed. When images are recorded in zoom mode, only the zoomed area is recorded.

Selecting the Zoom Position (Pan/Tilt Position): You can select which area of the image is displayed when zoomed.

  1. Press [Menu] → select "Initial settings" → [OK].
  2. Select "Zoom position settings" → [OK]. If multiple doorphones, select the doorphone to configure → [OK]. A zoomed image is displayed.
  3. Select the desired zoom position → [OK]. A beep sounds, settings change, and the display turns off.
  4. When finished, press [OFF].

Note: If no operation is performed for 90 seconds, the setting is cancelled and the screen turns off.

4. Talking and Monitoring

4.1 Answering Doorphone Calls

When a call is received, the main monitor and extension monitor ring and display the doorphone image.

To Answer the Call: Press [TALK]. Speak within 50 cm of the microphone. Speak alternatively with the visitor; speaking simultaneously may prevent hearing each other. You can talk for up to 90 seconds. To End the Call: Press [OFF].

Note: Display turns off if no answer within 30 seconds. Displayed images are automatically recorded (page 15).

Features Available During Incoming Calls: Monitoring feature (page 13).

Features Available While Talking: Adjusting wide/zoom and pan/tilt settings [*1], turning operation guide on/off (page 19), adjusting sound/display settings (page 19), using "press-to-talk" (page 13), transferring calls (page 13).

[*1] These functions are not available for the supplied doorphone (VL-V524). They can be used with optional doorphones (page 4).

Press-to-Talk Mode: Useful for clearer conversations in noisy environments. While talking, press and hold [TALK] for about 2 seconds. A beep sounds and [Talk Icon] is displayed. To speak, press and hold [TALK]. [Talk Icon] displays yellow. To listen, release [TALK]. [Listen Icon] displays white. Press-to-talk mode cancels when the call ends.

4.2 Transferring Doorphone Calls

You can transfer a doorphone call between the main monitor and extension monitor.

To Transfer a Call:

  1. While talking, press [Page].
  2. If multiple devices, select the device to transfer to → [OK]. To page all devices, select "Call all together" → [OK].
  3. Page the other party.
  4. When the paged party answers, ask them to receive the call from the doorphone → [OFF]. To cancel and talk again, press [TALK].

To Receive a Call: When an intercom call is received, press [TALK] to talk to the paging party. When the doorphone image is displayed, talk to the visitor. When finished, press [OFF].

Note: The visitor cannot hear voices during paging.

4.3 Monitoring the Outside with the Doorphone

You can monitor sounds and images from the doorphone using the main monitor and extension monitor.

  1. Press [Monitor]. If multiple doorphones, select the desired doorphone → [OK]. The doorphone images are displayed.
  2. Monitor sound and image. You can talk to the monitored party by pressing [TALK].
  3. When finished, press [OFF].

Note: Sound from your end is not heard at the doorphone. Monitoring is limited to about 3 minutes.

Features Available While Monitoring: Recording doorphone images (page 15), adjusting wide/zoom and pan/tilt settings [*1] (page 19), turning operation guide on/off (page 19), adjusting sound/display settings (page 19).

4.4 Talking with Other Devices

You can make intercom calls between the main monitor and extension monitor.

To Make a Call:

  1. Press [Menu].
  2. If multiple devices, select the device to page → [OK]. To page all devices, select "Call all together" → [OK].
  3. Page the other party.
  4. Talk with the paged party when they answer.
  5. When finished, press [OFF].

To Receive a Call: When an intercom call is received, press [TALK] to talk to the paging party. When finished, press [OFF].

Note: Paging ends after about 30 seconds; intercom calls end after about 90 seconds.

5. Recording and Playing

5.1 Recording Doorphone Images

The main monitor and extension monitor can record doorphone images (still images) from up to 50 calls or monitoring sessions. Images are saved in sets of up to 4 images.

5.1.1 Recording Automatically (Recording a Received Call)

When a visitor calls, the system automatically records 4 images (whether you answer or not). Recording starts about 2 seconds after the call is received. If you do not answer, images are saved as unplayed images, and the play lamp lights. If there are multiple doorphones, incoming calls during talking/monitoring are not displayed/recorded. You must end the current call or stop monitoring. If an incoming call occurs during another incoming call, the number of recorded images from the first caller (4 images) may be reduced. When memory is full, new images overwrite the oldest ones automatically, even if unplayed.

5.1.2 Recording Manually (Recording While Monitoring)

You can manually record images while monitoring. While monitoring, press [Record]. Up to 4 images will be recorded. [Recording Icon] is displayed on the screen.

5.2 Playing Recorded Images

When new (unplayed) images are recorded, the play lamp lights. Manually recorded images can only be played by the device that recorded them.

  1. Press [Play]. The "Recorded image list" screen is displayed.
  2. Select "Unplayed images" or "Played images" → [OK]. The most recent image set of the selected type is displayed.
  3. Browse image sets and images. Available operations include playing all images continuously, browsing older/newer sets, displaying options menu, and returning to the previous screen.
  4. When finished, press [OFF].

Note: The play lamp turns off when the unplayed image is displayed.

5.2.1 Image Playing Screen

5.2.2 Options Available When Playing Images

While playing images, press [Menu] to display options and change settings.

To Turn Off the Operation Guide: Press a soft key other than [Menu] → select "Guide off" → [OK]. Soft keys may not operate their features when the guide is off. Press any soft key to briefly display the guide.

To Turn On the Operation Guide: Press any soft key → select "Guide on" → [OK].

To Turn Protection On and Off: Select "Protect" (to turn on) or "Remove protection" (to turn off) → [OK]. Protected images cannot be deleted. Up to 20 image sets can be protected.

To Delete the Current Image: Select "Delete" → [OK] → [Yes]. Use "Delete all images" to delete all images in one operation (see page 22).

To Adjust the Screen Brightness: Select "Brightness" → adjust the brightness.

6. Using Electric Locks and Other Devices

6.1 Using Electric Locks

You can unlock a door or gate using the main monitor when a commercially available electric lock is connected. You can also select the duration for control signals. A maximum of 2 electric locks can be connected to the main monitor. Consult your dealer for information on connecting electric locks to doorphones. Refer to the electric lock's operating instructions and the product's Installation Guide for connection details.

6.1.1 Configuring Electric Locks

  1. Press [Menu].
  2. Select "Connected devices" → [OK].
  3. Select "Electric lock" → [OK].
  4. Select the doorphone ("Doorphone 1" or "Doorphone 2") to assign the electric lock to → [OK].
  5. Select the type of electric lock → [OK].
  6. Select the device the electric lock is connected to → [OK].
  7. Select the unlocking time → [OK].
  8. When finished, press [OFF].

Electric Lock Settings: Options include "Unlocking buzzer sound" (determines if a buzzer sounds when unlocked, see page 21) and "View extension after unlocking" (determines if the doorphone image display time is extended, see page 21).

6.1.2 Unlocking Electric Locks

  1. Press [Unlock] while talking or monitoring.
  2. If 2 electric locks are available, select the lock to be unlocked → [OK] → press [Unlock] to unlock another electric lock.

Note: Unlocking is only possible while talking or monitoring. When using multiple electric locks with different doorphones, operate locks only from the doorphone they are connected to.

6.2 Doorbells

A doorbell can be connected to your main monitor. The main monitor and extension monitor will ring when the doorbell button is pressed. Configure the main monitor by pressing [Menu] → "Connected devices" → "Doorphone connection" → "Doorphone 2" → "Use door bell" → [OK]. A beep sounds, and [OFF] is pressed. Connect a doorbell to the IN3 and IN4 terminals.

6.3 Panasonic PBX Integration

Connecting the main monitor to a PBX allows using PBX extensions to answer doorphone calls. Use only Panasonic PBXs (page 4). Refer to PBX operating instructions and the Installation Guide for connection details. If a doorphone call is answered via a PBX extension, the doorphone camera image is displayed on the main monitor, and [PBX Icon] indicates a PBX extension is on the call. While [PBX Icon] is displayed, the main monitor cannot be used to answer calls. The display turns off after the call ends or after 3 minutes. If the main monitor answers a doorphone call, the extension will continue ringing for 15-30 seconds. The extension user cannot answer or join the call after the main monitor answers. When using two doorphones (excluding VL-V591 lobby station), PBX extensions can only call the doorphone last contacted.

7. Incoming Call Operations

7.1 When Another Incoming Call is Received

When another incoming call is received while talking, monitoring, or receiving a call, the ringtone sounds and notifications are received on the main monitor and extension monitor.

Main Monitor Example (Incoming call during talking with Doorphone 1): When there is an incoming call from Doorphone 2 while talking with Doorphone 1, the display changes to the new incoming call, and the previous call terminates. The ringtone sounds, and the incoming call icon [Incoming Call Icon] is displayed.

To Answer the Incoming Call: Press [OFF]. The original call or monitoring terminates, and the image changes. Press [TALK] to talk with the visitor.

Main Monitor Example (Incoming call during an intercom call): When there is an incoming call from a doorphone during an intercom call, the ringtone sounds, and the incoming call icon [Incoming Call Icon] is displayed. To answer: Press [OFF]. Transferring terminates, the original call's image is displayed, and you can talk to the original caller. Press [OFF] again to display the new incoming call's image. Press [TALK] to talk with the visitor.

8. Additional Functions

8.1 Zooming In and Out (Wide/Zoom, Pan/Tilt)

These functions are not available for the supplied doorphone (VL-V524). They can be used with optional doorphones (page 4). When on a call or monitoring, you can display images in wide mode or zoom mode. During zoom mode, you can change the zoom position (pan/tilt).

To Switch from Wide Mode to Zoom Mode: Press [Zoom].

To Switch from Zoom Mode to Wide Mode: Press [Wide].

To Change the Zoom Position in Zoom Mode: Press [Pan/tilt] → [OK] → press [▲] or [▼].

Note: See page 11 for wide/zoom mode examples. The zoom feature uses digital zoom, potentially reducing image quality. Images recorded in zoom mode only capture the zoomed area. Adjusting these settings may cancel them the next time an image is displayed. To change initial display settings, see page 11.

8.2 Sound and Display Settings for Calls and Monitoring

While monitoring or on a call, press [Menu] to display the options menu and change sound and display settings.

To Adjust Incoming Call Volume [*1, *2]: Press [Sound] → [Receiver volume] → adjust volume.

To Adjust Volume Heard at Doorphone [*1]: Press [Sound] → [Owner's voice volume] → select setting.

To Use the Voice Changer [*1]: Press [Sound] → [Voice changer] → select setting. (Makes voice heard at doorphone sound deeper.)

To Turn Off the Operation Guide: Press [Menu] → "Guide off" → [OK]. While guide is off, soft keys may not operate features. Press any soft key other than [Menu] to briefly display the guide.

To Turn On the Operation Guide: Press any soft key → "Guide on" → [OK].

To Adjust Screen Brightness: Press [Menu] → "Display" → [OK] → "Brightness" → select setting.

To Adjust Backlight Compensation: Press [Menu] → "Display" → [OK] → "Backlight compensation" → select setting.

To Turn LED Lights On or Off: Press [Menu] → "Display" → [OK] → "Illumination" → select setting. [LED Icon] is displayed when lights are on.

[*1] These settings cannot be changed during an incoming call.
[*2] Volume can also be adjusted by pressing [Volume] on the right side of the main monitor (see page 10).

8.3 Ringtone Settings

You can change the ringtone type and volume for incoming calls. For configuration information, see pages 10 and 21.

8.4 Main Monitor/Extension Monitor - Function Settings List

Change settings to match usage. Press [Menu] → Select item → [OK] → Select setting → [OK] → Press [OFF]. Settings are cancelled if no operation for 90 seconds or if an incoming call is received. Default settings are indicated by < >. "U" is displayed next to the selected item.

9. Expanding the System

9.1 Registering Extension Monitors

Extension monitors can be registered to the main monitor.

9.1.1 Registering Extension Monitors

Main Monitor: Press [Menu] → select "Register/Cancel" → [OK]. Select "Register" → [OK]. When prompted to register your main monitor, select "Main monitor" → [OK]. Select the registration number for the extension monitor → [OK].

Extension Monitor: Press [Menu] → select "Register/Cancel" → [OK]. Select "Register" → [OK]. When prompted to register your extension monitor, select "Extension monitor" → [OK] → [Yes]. Select the registration number for the extension monitor → [OK]. Ensure the registration number matches the main monitor's selection. Registration is complete when the extension monitor restarts.

Main Monitor: Press [OFF].

9.2 Cancelling Devices

  1. Press [Menu] → select "Register/Cancel" → [OK].
  2. Select "Cancel" → [OK].
  3. Select the device to cancel [*1] → [OK] → [Yes]. A beep sounds and "Cancel completed" is displayed.

[*1] Not displayed when using as an extension monitor.

Note: To change an extension monitor's registration number or re-register, first cancel the extension monitor itself, then re-register it. Extension monitors become main monitors when cancelled.

10. General Information

10.1 Cleaning

Wipe the product with a soft, dry cloth. For excessive dirt, use a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water. Important: Do not use cleaning products containing alcohol, polish powder, powder soap, benzine, thinner, wax, petroleum, or boiling water. Do not spray with insecticide, glass cleaner, hair spray, or wall paint, as this may change the product's color or quality.

12.2.1 Calling a Resident

Entering a Room Number: Enter room number, press [Call].

Searching by First Letter of Name: Press [*]. Enter first letter using keypad (press key repeatedly to scroll letters). Hints are displayed at bottom of screen. Press [▲] or [▼] to search for name. Press [Call].

Searching Through All Names: Press [▼]. Press [▲] or [▼] to search for desired name. Press [Call].

Switching Image Displayed on Main Monitor: While talking to main monitor, press [#] to switch image from lobby station to camera. Press [*] to return to lobby image.

12.2.2 Calling a Receptionist

  1. Press [Menu].
  2. Press [▲] or [▼] to search for receptionist.
  3. Press [Call].

12.2.3 Opening the Door by Entering an Unlock Code

  1. Press [#].
  2. Enter 4-digit unlock code.
  3. Press [Call].

12.3 Main Monitor Operations with the Lobby Station

12.3.2 Monitoring the Outside with the Lobby Station or Camera

  1. Press [Monitor]. If multiple devices, select desired device → [OK]. Images are displayed. If a camera is connected to the lobby station, alternate monitoring between lobby station and camera by pressing [Camera] or [Lobby].
  2. When finished, press [OFF].

Note: Monitoring availability may depend on system composition.

12.3.3 Opening Entrance Doors

You can open the entrance door while talking to a visitor or monitoring with a lobby station or camera. Press [Unlock] while talking or monitoring.

12.3.4 Calling Extension Telephones

  1. Press [TALK].
  2. Select desired extension telephone (up to 4 may be displayed).
  3. Press [OK] → [Yes].
  4. When finished, press [OFF].

12.3.5 Door Bells

A doorbell can be connected to your main monitor. The main monitor rings when the doorbell button is pressed.

12.4 System Conditions and Limitations

Only one call or monitoring session can be handled at a time. Subsequent calls may disconnect current calls (lower priority) or not connect (higher priority). Priority order: Low: Monitoring, Medium: General calls (lobby to main monitor, monitor to PBX extension), High: Emergency calls. All calls and monitoring sessions disconnect after a programmed "timeout". Optional devices and configuration are required for operations. Contact your building manager for more information.
