Introduction
This document provides essential information for the correct installation, operation, and maintenance of the Westfalia detachable tow bar system for the Nissan X-Trail (2014-). It is crucial to follow these instructions carefully to ensure safety and proper functionality.
Safety First
Important Safety Precautions:
- Always ensure the detachable ball bar is correctly locked before driving.
- Never use the tow bar if any locking mechanism is not functioning correctly.
- Do not attempt to unlock the mechanism when a trailer or load carrier is attached.
- Only qualified personnel should perform repairs or dismantling of the detachable ball bar.
- Keep the ball bar and receiver tube clean at all times for proper operation.
- Regular maintenance of mechanical parts is essential. Use only graphite for the lock.
- Lubricate bearing points, sliding surfaces, and balls regularly with resin-free grease or oil.
- When cleaning the vehicle with a high-pressure washer or steam cleaner, the ball bar must be removed and the receiver tube plugged.
- Keep the key number (????) in a safe place for potential reordering.

Installation Procedure
General Notes:
- Ensure the vehicle's bumper is compatible with the cutting template provided (Page 23).
- National guidelines regarding installation approval must be observed.
- Any alteration or modification to the tow bar is prohibited and will void the type approval.
- Remove any insulating compound or underbody coating from the vehicle's contact surfaces for the tow bar.
Step 1: Preparing the Ball Bar
1. Remove the plug from the receiver tube. The ball bar is typically in an unlocked position when removed from the vehicle's boot. This is indicated by a visible gap of approximately 5 mm between the handwheel and the ball bar, and the red marking on the handwheel aligning with the green marking on the ball bar. Note: The ball bar can only be inserted in this unlocked state.
2. If the locking mechanism is engaged (locked position), it must be pre-tensioned. The locked position is identified by the green marking on the handwheel aligning with the green marking on the ball bar, with no gap between them. To pre-tension:
- With the key inserted and the lock open, pull the handwheel outwards (arrow 'a') and turn it to the stop (arrow 'b'). The release lever will engage, and the mechanism will remain pre-tensioned when the handwheel is released.
Step 2: Mounting the Ball Bar
1. Insert the ball bar from below into the receiver tube using the stop pin and push it upwards. The locking process will then occur automatically.
2. Keep hands away from the handwheel as it rotates during locking.
3. Close the lock and always remove the key. The key cannot be removed if the lock is open. Press the cover onto the lock.
Step 3: Removing the Ball Bar
1. Pull the cover off the lock and press it onto the key's handle.
2. Open the lock with the key.
3. Hold the ball bar, pull the handwheel outwards (arrow 'a'), and turn it to the stop (arrow 'b') to unlock it in the extracted position.
4. Remove the ball bar from the receiver tube. The handwheel can now be released; it will automatically engage in the unlocked position.
5. Stow the ball bar safely in the boot of the vehicle, protected from dirt.
6. Insert the plug into the receiver tube.
Operation and Checks
Before each journey, check the following for correct locking:
- The green marking on the handwheel aligns with the green marking on the ball bar.
- The handwheel rests against the ball bar with no gap.
- The lock is closed and the key is withdrawn; the handwheel cannot be pulled out.
- The ball bar is firmly seated in the receiver tube. Check by shaking it.
If any of these checks are not satisfactory, repeat the installation. If issues persist, do not use the tow bar and contact the manufacturer.
Usage Notes:
- The ball bar can be installed and removed easily with normal hand strength.
- Never use aids or tools, as this may damage the mechanism.
- Never unlock the mechanism when a trailer or load carrier is attached.
- When driving without a trailer or load carrier, remove the ball bar and always insert the plug into the receiver tube. This is especially important if the tow ball obstructs the view of the license plate or lights.

Bumper Cutting Template Description
A template is provided for modifying the vehicle's bumper to accommodate the tow bar. This template outlines the area to be cut away, with specific dimensions indicated. It includes measurements for the left and right outside edges, the bottom edge of the bumper, and overall dimensions (e.g., 20mm, 182mm, 50mm, 57mm, 70mm). The template is critical for ensuring a correct fit and must be verified against the specific car model and tow bar.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance of the mechanical parts is crucial. The lock should only be treated with graphite. Lubricate bearing points, sliding surfaces, and balls with resin-free grease or oil regularly. This lubrication also provides additional protection against corrosion.
