Product Overview: Fellowes SB-87Cs Shredder

This document provides instructions for the Fellowes SB-87Cs shredder, model SB-87Cs.

Key Features:

• Shredder Head: Contains the cutting mechanism.
• Indicator Lights (Red): Signal specific conditions such as Paper Jam, Door Open, Overheated, or Bin Full.
• Safe Sense™ Technology: Stops shredding when hands are detected too close to the paper entry. The sensor light turns yellow when active.
• Door: Access to the bin and internal components. Ensure it is tightly closed.
• Sheet Capacity Gauge: Indicates the number of sheets being fed.
• Sheet Capacity Icon: Visual representation of sheet capacity.
• Paper Entry: Slot for feeding paper.
• Casters: Allow for easy mobility of the shredder.
• Card/CD Entry: Separate slot for shredding credit cards and CDs/DVDs.
• Safe Sense™ Override Switch: Used to bypass Safe Sense™ technology in case of a jam. When in override position, the Safe Sense™ light flashes, and the feature is disabled.
• Control Switch: Features Auto-On (1), Off (0), and Reverse (R) functions.
• Pocket for Manual and Oil: Storage for user manual and shredder oil.
• Bin: Collects shredded material.

Operation

The shredder is ready to use. Insert a waste bag for easy disposal.

• Continuous Operation: Maximum of 20 minutes. After 20 minutes of continuous use, the shredder will enter a 40-minute cool-down period.
• After Each Pass: The shredder runs briefly to clear the entry.

To Shred Paper:

1. Set the control switch to Off (0) and plug in the shredder.
2. Check the paper amount to ensure it does not exceed the sheet capacity.
3. Set the control switch to Auto-On (1).
4. Feed paper into the paper entry and release.

To Shred Cards/CDs:

1. Set the control switch to Off (0) and unplug the shredder.
2. Set the control switch to Auto-On (1).
3. Hold the card/CD at the edge and feed it into the card/CD entry.
4. Release the card/CD.

Safe Sense™ Technology

To Test Safe Sense™ Technology:

1. Press Auto-On (1).
2. Touch the test area. The sensor light should illuminate.
3. The sensor light will turn yellow when Safe Sense™ is active.

Breakthrough Safety Technology! Safe Sense™ stops shredding when hands are too close to the opening. Warning: When the override switch is in the override position, the Safe Sense™ light flashes, and the Safe Sense™ feature is rendered un-functional.

Capabilities

Will Shred: Paper, credit cards, CD/DVDs, staples, and small paper clips.

Will Not Shred: Continuous forms, adhesive labels, transparencies, newspaper, cardboard, large paper clips, laminates, or plastic other than noted above.

Paper Shred Size: Confetti-Cut: 5/32" x 1-1/2" (3.9 x 38mm)

Maximum Sheets per Pass (Confetti-Cut): 15 sheets*

Cards/CDs per Pass: 1 card/CD

Paper Width: 8.5" / 229mm

Continuous Operation: 20 minutes

*Based on 20lb, 8.5"x11" paper at 120v, 60Hz, SB-87Cs-5.0Amps. Heavier paper, humidity, or other than rated voltage may reduce capacity. Recommended daily usage rates: 50-100 paper passes; 50 cards; 10 CDs.

Troubleshooting

Paper Jam: Set to Off (0) and empty the bin. Replace the bin, close the door, and follow any or all of the below procedures:

• Set to Off (0) and unplug.
• Press and hold Reverse (R).
• Alternate slowly back and forth between Auto-On (1) and Reverse (R).
• Gently pull uncut paper from the paper entry.
• Plug in.
• Press and hold Reverse (R).

Note: If the Safe Sense™ light remains on, you must engage the override switch to perform the above steps.

Indicator Lights:

• Yellow: Safe Sense™ active.
• Yellow Flashing: Safe Sense™ not active.
• Red (Paper Jam): Clear the paper jam.
• Red (Door Open): Make sure the door is tightly closed.
• Red (Overheated): Wait 40 minutes for the motor to cool down.
• Red (Bin Full): Remove and empty the bin.

Maintenance

• Run regularly in reverse for one minute.
• Follow the oiling procedure below and repeat twice.

Oiling Procedure:

1. Set to Off (0) and unplug.
2. Apply oil across the paper entry.
3. Set to Auto-On (1).
4. Shred one sheet of paper.
5. Set to Off (0).
6. Press and hold Reverse (R) for 2-3 seconds.

CAUTION: Only use a non-aerosol vegetable oil in a long nozzle container, such as Fellowes 35250.

Important Safety Instructions — Read Before Using!

WARNING

• Keep away from children and pets. Always unplug when not in use.
• Keep foreign objects – gloves, jewelry, clothing, hair, etc. – away from shredder openings. If an object enters the top opening, switch to Reverse (R) to back out the object.
• Never use aerosol, petroleum-based, or other flammable products on or near the shredder. Do not use canned air on the shredder.
• Do not use if damaged or defective. Do not open the shredder head. Do not place near or over a heat or water source.
• Shred a maximum of 15 sheets per pass to avoid jams.
• The grounded socket-outlet shall be installed near the equipment and shall be easily accessible.

CAUTION

• Avoid touching exposed blades under the Confetti-Cut shredder head.
• Use only the designated entry for cards/CDs. Keep fingers away from the CD hole.
• The recommended outlet should be easily accessible.

Oil When: Bin is full, or immediately if capacity decreases, motor sounds different, or shredder stops running.

Warranty

LIMITED WARRANTY

Fellowes, Inc. ("Fellowes") warrants the cutting blades of the machine to be free from defects in material and workmanship for 7 years from the date of purchase by the original consumer. Fellowes warrants all other parts of the machine to be free of defects in material and workmanship for 1 year from the date of purchase by the original consumer. If any part is found to be defective during the warranty period, your sole and exclusive remedy will be repair or replacement, at Fellowes' option and expense, of the defective part.

This warranty does not apply in cases of abuse, mishandling, or unauthorized repair. ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY, INCLUDING THAT OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, IS HEREBY LIMITED IN DURATION TO THE APPROPRIATE WARRANTY PERIOD SET FORTH ABOVE. In no event shall Fellowes be liable for any consequential or incidental damages attributable to this product.

This warranty gives you specific legal rights. The duration, terms, and conditions of this warranty are valid worldwide, except where different limitations, restrictions, or conditions may be required by local law.
