Basics
Introduction
Your SmartBand 2 is a companion product that connects wirelessly via Bluetooth® with Android™ devices. Worn on your dominant wrist, it can monitor your body movements and interact with your Android™ device to generate data about your daily life and habits. For example, the SmartBand 2 counts your steps and records data about your physical state while you sleep, walk or run.
Your SmartBand 2 is a device you can wear everyday and features a sensor that monitors your pulse and helps determine your heart rate. Together with the Lifelog application, you can set personal goals and then track your progress in a comprehensive and easily viewable format. When used with a compatible Android™ device, you can use the SmartBand 2 to receive notifications and manage your alarms and phone calls.
Before you can get started using your SmartBand 2, you must download the SmartBand 2 application and set up the accessory to work with your phone or tablet. Refer to the relevant setup information for more details. Also, remember that your Android™ device must run the Android™ software version 4.4 or higher and support the Bluetooth® version 4.0 profile.

Measuring Stress & Recovery
Stress is a natural part of life contributing to overall well-being. The SmartBand 2's Stress & Recovery values are based on your Heart Rate (HR) and Heart Rate Variability (HRV), analyzing how well your body manages stress throughout the day. It can measure HR and HRV even when disconnected from your Android™ device, storing data for up to 72 hours before syncing.
⚠️ This product is intended for tracking exercise and lifestyle; it is not a medical device. Data should not be used for medical decisions or to replace professional medical advice. Sony Mobile disclaims any warranty for medical use. Consult a physician before starting new training regimes, especially if you have a pacemaker or other medical devices.
Extensive use of pulse and stress measurement increases battery consumption.
Pulse Measurement
Pulse measurement is the recommended method for determining your heart rate (HR), indicating exercise intensity. Pulse rate is measured in beats per minute (BPM). While "pulse rate" and "heart rate" are distinct concepts, they are used interchangeably in this guide.
Stress and Recovery Levels
Stress & Recovery is determined by Heart Rate Variability (HRV), the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats. High HRV indicates a relaxed or recovering state, while low HRV indicates stress. Activities like reading can result in low stress or recovery, while busy moments might indicate high stress (which can also be excitement). Balancing high stress requires relaxation and good sleep. Medium stress levels may indicate productive work or social engagement.
Recovery primarily occurs during sleep. Factors like an active lifestyle, healthy nutrition, reduced alcohol intake, and stress management can improve long-term recovery. Avoiding strenuous physical activity and winding down before bed also positively impacts recovery.
⚠️ Stress & Recovery values are not a reliable source for overall fitness analysis. Low-intensity exercises might be misinterpreted as recovery.
⚠️ For Stress & Recovery measurement, wear your SmartBand 2 overnight.
How the SmartBand 2 Measures Pulse and Stress
The SmartBand 2 uses green lights and photodiodes to detect blood flow in your wrist. By flashing lights hundreds of times per second, it calculates heartbeats per minute to estimate your heart rate.
Factors Affecting Pulse and Stress Measurement
- Skin perfusion: Blood flow through the skin varies by individual and environment. Cold conditions can reduce skin perfusion, making readings difficult.
- Movement: Rhythmic movements (running, cycling) yield better results than irregular ones (tennis, boxing).
- Skin pigmentation variations: Tattoos or skin changes can interfere with sensor light, affecting reading accuracy.
Getting the Most from the SmartBand 2 Heart Rate Sensor
Even in ideal conditions, reliable heart rate readings are not guaranteed for all users. To improve readings:
- Wear your SmartBand 2 snugly and comfortably. Tighten if it slips.
- Clean the SmartBand 2, especially the heart rate sensor, after exercise or heavy sweating.
Measuring Pulse and Stress Automatically
The SmartBand 2 measures pulse, stress, and recovery levels automatically about six times per hour.
Measuring Pulse and Stress Manually
You can initiate a manual pulse reading from the device or your Android™ device. For best results during exercise, start the sensor a few minutes prior.
⚠️ Notifications (except incoming calls and alarms) are not displayed on your SmartBand 2 during manual measurements.
To Measure Pulse and Stress Manually from Your SmartBand 2
- Double-press the power key to start measurement. Notification lights will flash orange alternately, then together when complete. Results appear in the app.
- Double-press the power key again to end the measurement.
If the SmartBand 2 cannot detect your pulse, it vibrates three times, and notification lights flash orange alternately. Adjust the device's position or clean the sensor if readings fail.
To Measure Pulse and Stress Manually from Your Android™ Device
- From your Android™ device's main application screen, tap SmartBand 2. The device will attempt to read your pulse and display results in the Lifelog or SmartBand 2 application.
- Quit the SmartBand 2 application to end the measurement.
STAMINA Mode and Smart Wake Up Alarms

- Tap "STAMINA mode" and drag the slider to the ON/Off position.
Smart Wake Up Alarms
Set one or more Smart wake up alarms in the SmartBand 2 application. The alarm wakes you during your lightest sleep phase within a set time frame. It notifies you with continuous vibration. For example, an alarm set for 06:30-07:00 AM will wake you between those times when you enter light sleep. If no light sleep occurs, it wakes you at 07:00 AM.
