2. Hookup

2.1 Front Panel Connections and Controls

Microphone/Instruments/Line Inputs: Equipped with PreSonus XMAX microphone preamplifiers, these inputs accommodate various microphone types. Each preamp features a Class A input buffer and a dual-servo gain stage for low noise and wide gain control.

The combo jacks accept XLR or 1/4-inch plugs. Channels 1 and 2 offer a 1/4-inch TRS input that can be switched between instrument-level and line-level signals. Other combo jacks provide line-level inputs only.

Input Source Button (Channels 1-2): Switches the 1/4-inch input between instrument and line levels. When illuminated, it accepts line-level signals; when not illuminated, it engages the instrument preamp.

Power User Tip: Active instruments with internal preamps or line-level outputs should use the line input. Using the instrument input for active instruments can cause damage and loud, distorted signals.

Note: Changing connections or phantom power can cause audio spikes. Lower the channel trim before making these changes.

Input Gain Control: Provides variable gain: -15 to +65 dB for mic/instrument inputs, and -20 to +20 dB for line inputs.

48 Volt Phantom Power: Supplies 48V phantom power to microphone inputs. The button illuminates blue when active. This is required for condenser microphones; consult your microphone's manual to avoid damaging dynamic or ribbon mics.

XLR Connector Wiring: Pin 1 = GND, Pin 2 = +48V, Pin 3 = +48V.

Input Meters: LED meters display input levels. The red Clip LED indicates a signal at -0.5 dBFS, signaling potential overload. Use gain controls to stay below this level.

Output Meters: Display signal levels for the Main Left/Right outputs (-50 dBFS to -0.5 dBFS).

Mute Button: Mutes the Main Output signal. Illuminates red when active.

Sync LED: Indicates sync status with the computer. Flashes red/blue when no sync is available. For Studio 1810c, it also indicates external S/PDIF sync. Flashes if sample rates don't match external clock sources.

Mono Button (Studio 1824c only): Sums the Main stereo output to mono, useful for checking mono compatibility and phase cancellation.

Cue A/B (Studio 1810c only): Switches the source for Headphone 1 output between playback streams 1-2 (default) and 3-4.

Headphone Level: Controls output level for two headphone outputs. Studio 1824c has both on the front; Studio 1810c has controls on the front and outputs on the rear. Headphone 1 shares streams with main outputs; Headphone 2 shares with outputs 3-4.

Main Knob: Controls the Main Left/Right output level (-80 dB to 0 dB attenuation).

Power Button and Sync Light (Studio 1824c only): The power button's light ring indicates word clock source: Blue (master or receiving sync), Flashing Red/Blue (detecting clock), Purple (no clock detected).

Power User Tip: Proper word clock sync prevents audio artifacts. The Studio 1824c can serve as the master clock.

2.2 Back Panel Connections

Mic / Line Inputs (Studio 1824c only): Combo jacks for microphones (XLR) and line-level devices (1/4-inch TRS up to +18 dBFS).

Line Inputs (Studio 1810c only): 1/4-inch TRS inputs for line-level devices, scaled to +18 dBFS. These are direct-to-ADC with no gain control.

Line Outputs: Balanced 1/4-inch TRS outputs for routing audio to external devices. Studio 1824c outputs 1-2 share streams with main outs and Headphone 1; outputs 3-4 share with Headphone 2. Other outputs have independent streams. Studio 1810c outputs 3-4 share with Headphone 2.

Power User Tip: Line outputs are DC coupled, usable for control voltage to external analog equipment.

Main Outputs: Controlled by the front panel Main Level knob. Playback streams 1-2 route here, along with Studio 1824c outputs 1-2 and Headphone 1.

S/PDIF Input and Output: Transmits/receives two channels of audio up to 24-bit/96 kHz. Also supports word clock transmission/reception.

Power User Tip: In UC Surface, set S/PDIF as Clock Source and match sample rate for external clocking.

ADAT – S/MUX Input/Output: For external digital devices. Provides 8 channels at 44.1/48 kHz, and 4 channels at 88.2/96 kHz. Does not function at 176.4 or 192 kHz.

BNC Output (Studio 1824c only): Transmits word clock to other digital devices, enabling the Studio 1824c to act as the master clock.

MIDI Input and Output: For connecting and communicating with external MIDI equipment, used for sequencing and control.

Power User Tip: MIDI triggers or controls audio sources; ensure correct data transmission.

USB-C Port: Connects to computer. Compatible with USB 2.0 and 3.0. USB 1.1 is not supported.

Power Connection: For the external power supply.

Power Switch (Studio 1810c): On/off switch.

3. Connecting to a Computer

3.1 Installation for Windows

Connect the Studio-series interface to a USB-C or USB-A (2.0/3.0) port. Launch the Universal Control installer, which guides through installing ASIO/WDM drivers and UC Surface. It is recommended to close all other applications before installation.

3.2 Installation for macOS

Studio-series interfaces are class-compliant Core Audio devices in macOS; no driver installation is needed. However, install Universal Control for UC Surface and firmware updates. Follow installer prompts carefully, and do not connect the interface until instructed.

Power User Tip: Universal Control can be found in the Applications folder and can be added to the Dock for easy access.

3.3 Firmware Updates

Universal Control checks for and prompts for firmware updates. Click "Update Firmware" to begin. WARNING: Do not power off or disconnect the interface during the update process. Reboot the device once the update is complete.

3.4 Using the Studio-series interfaces with Popular Audio Applications

These interfaces are compatible with any audio application supporting Core Audio or ASIO. Consult your DAW's documentation for specific driver selection. Basic setup instructions are provided for:

4. UC Surface Monitor Control Software

UC Surface is a powerful monitor control software included with Universal Control, enabling high-quality monitor mixes and more. It integrates with Studio One's mixer and offers similar functions for other DAWs, controlling channel and mix output levels, solo, and mute.

Note: Adjusting faders in UC Surface affects monitor mix levels, not recording levels. Recording levels must be set using the interface's preamp controls.

Playback Streams: DAW playback streams can be routed flexibly to any output via UC Surface.

4.1 UC Surface Launch Window

Universal Control manages PreSonus hardware. The Launch window provides access to driver settings.

Sample Rate: Set from 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz. Higher rates improve fidelity but increase system load.

Clock Source: Select Internal, External S/PDIF, or External ADAT (1824c only).

Block Size (Windows only): Adjusts buffer size (16-4096 samples) to balance latency and performance. Lowering reduces latency but increases CPU demand. If pops/clicks occur, increase buffer size.

Loopback (Windows only): Two virtual streams allow recording audio from one application to another. Useful for recording game audio, streams, or karaoke tracks.

Power User Tip: Loopback is not available in macOS due to Core Audio compliance; third-party apps are needed.

File Menu: Manages connected devices (Show/Close All Devices, Sign Out, Check for Updates, Transfers, About, Quit).

Settings Menu: Customizes the Universal Control experience (Always on Top, Run at Startup, Preferences, Rescan Network, Language).

4.1.1 Loopback Recording (Windows only)

Provides two virtual streams for recording application audio into another application. This is useful for capturing audio from games, web browsers, or media players for podcasts or livestreams, or for recording vocals over karaoke tracks.

When "Merge Loopback with 1/2" is selected, application audio is mixed with analog inputs 1 and 2. When "Dedicated Loopback Inputs" is selected, application audio is recorded on driver inputs 19/20.

Power User Tip: When using loopback, select Outputs 1 and 2 in the source application and Outputs 3 and 4 in the recording application to avoid feedback.

4.2 UC Surface Controls

UC Surface allows creation of multiple low-latency monitor mixes (three for 1810c, four for 1824c) from input channels and DAW returns.

4.2.1 Channel Controls
