Turning On and Off
Insert the key into the ignition (below the dashboard) and turn right to activate. The power indicator will light up. Turn the key left and remove it to turn off.
Warning: The electrical system is live when the e-bike is on. Turn off and remove the key before accessing electrical components. The battery carries a significant charge.
Accelerating and Decelerating
The throttle is on the right handlebar grip. Rotate the grip counter-clockwise (away from you) to accelerate. Release the grip (turn towards you) to decelerate. Avoid over-rotating the throttle.
Warning: Do not activate the throttle until seated and ready to move. The e-bike could escape control, causing injury or damage.
Stopping
Brake levers are on both handlebars. Pull levers towards you to activate brakes. Using both brakes provides quicker stopping. Activating the brakes automatically cuts power to the motor.
Braking Safety Tips
- Wet weather reduces brake efficiency due to less friction. Slow down and allow more stopping distance.
- Have brakes and pads checked regularly, as pads wear down.
- Engage rear brakes before front brakes to avoid flipping.
Signalling
- Horn: Button on the left handlebar.
- Turn Signals: Activator on the left handlebar. Push left or right to indicate turns, push to the middle to cancel.
Lights
Headlight and tail light improve safety, especially at night. They consume electricity, potentially reducing range by about 5%.
Pedaling
The EM4 is motor-assisted. Pedaling alongside the motor increases travel distance and conserves battery power.
Riding in Wet Weather
The e-bike is designed for wet conditions, but the rear motor can cause slipping at high speeds. Reduce speed in wet conditions. Brakes may be less effective.
Motor and Water
The e-bike is not submersible. Ensure water level does not exceed the middle of the tire to prevent water ingress into the motor, which can cause short-circuits.
Riding in Cold Weather
The e-bike operates year-round. Battery performance is reduced below 10°C. Cold temperatures may also shorten battery lifespan.
Maximum Load
Do not exceed the maximum load capacity to maintain performance and prevent damage to components or motor burnout.
Disconnecting the Circuit Breaker
Disconnecting the circuit breaker blocks all battery power. This is useful for storage or servicing. Note: The alarm system requires the circuit breaker to be ON.
Long-Term Storage
For long-term storage, disconnect the circuit breaker to prevent accidental activation. Refer to the 'The Battery' section for battery maintenance during storage.
The Battery
Treat the e-bike's electrical systems with respect.
Battery Power
The dashboard displays battery charge. Recharge when the indicator drops significantly.
Distance and Power
The battery provides a range of 35+ km. Factors affecting range include rider weight, wind resistance, riding habits, terrain (hills), and tire pressure.
Saving Power
- Coasting: Utilize momentum downhill or on flat surfaces without using the motor.
- Stopping/Starting: Minimize frequent stops and starts, as the motor uses more power when accelerating from a standstill.
- Weight: Remove unnecessary weight from the bike.
- Air Pressure: Ensure tires are properly inflated to reduce drag and increase efficiency.
- Lights: Turn off lights when safe to conserve power (reduces range by ~5%).
- Pedaling: Assist acceleration by pedaling from a stop.
Charging Your E-Bike
You will need the supplied charger and a 110V household electrical outlet.
Charger Warning: Only use chargers with specifications identical to the original. Using incorrect chargers can irreparably damage the battery and electrical systems.
- Turn off the e-bike and remove the key.
- Plug the female end of the charger cable into the e-bike's charging port.
- Plug the male end of the charger power cable into a 110V wall socket or compatible generator.
- Allow the battery to charge for 6-12 hours.
- Disconnect the charger when the LED light turns green, indicating a full charge.
If the LED remains red after an extended period (e.g., 14+ hours) and the battery is hot, the battery or charger may need replacement. Stop charging and contact your Daymak dealer immediately.
Understanding Your Voltage
Voltage indicates the unit's power. A Low Voltage Threshold protects the battery by preventing the motor from drawing power below a certain point, extending battery life. If the motor cuts off, the battery may need charging. Voltage thresholds can often be checked via a Bluetooth app or manufacturer charts.
Charging the EM4 (Directly on Unit)
The EM4 has two lithium-ion battery packs that can be charged together or individually, either in or out of the bike. To charge directly:
- Locate the charge port under the seat, covered by a flap. Lift the flap and plug in the female end of the charger.
- The charger will glow red while charging and green when fully charged.
Warning: Do not leave the EM4 charging for extended periods after it is fully charged. Unplug the charger as soon as possible.
Accessing Your Circuit Breaker
A circuit breaker is installed to prevent surges. If the bike has no power, the breaker may have tripped. To access it:
- Unlock the glove compartment.
- Lift the holding container to reveal the battery compartment.
Charging the EM4 (Out of Unit)
You can remove the EM4 batteries to charge them separately. This allows you to charge one battery while using the other to power the bike.
- Locate the keyhole on the left side of the bike, just under the seat.
- Insert the key and turn it to unlock the glove compartment.
- Lift the glove compartment cover to reveal the batteries and circuit breaker.
Battery Compartment Details:
- 1. Circuit Breaker: Use this to stop all power to the unit.
- 2. Charge Port: Use this port to charge each battery individually.
- 3. Anderson Connector: Connects batteries to the bike; at least one must be plugged in for the bike to operate.
- 4. Handle: Lift the battery from here to remove or insert it.
With batteries removed, charge them using the ports on the battery itself. Purchasing an additional charger can halve the charging time.
Battery Care
Follow these suggestions for optimal battery performance and longevity:
- Charge Promptly: Charge your battery immediately after riding.
- Avoid Full Discharge: Do not let the battery run down completely before storage, as this significantly reduces lifespan.
- Maintain Charge: When stored, charge the battery occasionally (e.g., once every 21 days) to prevent power depletion.
- Storage Conditions: Store batteries on a flat, cool, dry surface. Avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures below 10°C.
- ❌ Warning: DO NOT place Lead-Acid batteries on concrete, as it drains their power and neutralizes the lead-acid.
Cold Weather and Your Battery
Battery performance is reduced below 10°C. Lithium-ion batteries perform better in temperature extremes than lead-acid, but both experience reduced performance in cold.
Replacement and Disposal
Lead-acid batteries typically last around 300 charges; lithium-ion batteries around 1000 charges. When performance degrades, contact your local Daymak dealer for replacement. Dispose of old batteries at a proper municipal battery recycling facility.
