Open the battery compartment cover (9) in the direction of the arrow, insert new batteries according to the symbol in the battery compartment. Equivalent rechargeable batteries can also be used.
LED Indicator:
- LED orange: Low battery level ? - insert new batteries.
Deliver used batteries to an appropriate collection point – they must not be disposed of in household waste. Remove batteries if the apparatus is not to be used for an extended period!
4.2 Slå på apparatet (Switching on the Apparatus)
Place the laser apparatus in the working position (vertical or horizontal). The laser is switched on and off using the ON/OFF button. The green LED indicates that the apparatus is in use. In the "self-leveling" operating function, the laser apparatus levels itself automatically. The laser beam blinks and does not rotate (yet). Once leveling is complete, the laser beam lights up continuously and begins to rotate. For the next 30 seconds, you can still make fine adjustments. These 30 seconds are indicated by the white "TILT" LED blinking slowly.
Diagram Description: Shows the laser device with the TILT and MAN buttons. An arrow indicates pressing the ON/OFF button once. A timer graphic shows "30 sec". A blinking laser line is shown, then a continuous rotating laser line. The TILT LED is shown blinking.
If the laser apparatus is tilted too much, the laser lines will blink. The laser apparatus is outside the self-leveling range and cannot level itself automatically.
Diagram Description: Shows the laser device tilted. A warning symbol appears. Text indicates "> ±5°" and "< ±5°". The laser lines are shown blinking when tilted.
5. Driftsmodus (Operating Modes)
5.1 Automatisk modus med tiltfunksjon (Automatic Mode with Tilt Function)
The tilt function alerts the user to disturbances, immediately detecting them. This operating mode is always set immediately after switching on. In the "automatic" operating function, the laser apparatus levels itself automatically.
Place the laser apparatus in the working position (vertical or horizontal). Press the ON/OFF button once. The LAR 160 / LAR 160 G is now set to "automatic mode with tilt function".
Diagram Description: Shows the laser device with the TILT and MAN buttons. An arrow indicates pressing the ON/OFF button once. A timer graphic shows "30 sec". The TILT LED is shown blinking slowly. After 30 seconds, the TILT LED is solid. A rotating laser line is shown.
Automatic leveling starts. When leveling is complete, the laser beam lights up continuously and begins to rotate. For the next 30 seconds, you can still make fine adjustments. These 30 seconds are indicated by the white "TILT" LED blinking slowly.
After 30 seconds, the white "TILT" LED lights up constantly, indicating the tilt function is active. If an error occurs that could disturb the precise adjustment and setting of the laser apparatus, the laser beam stops rotating. The "TILT" LED blinks red. If this happens, check if the laser apparatus needs to be re-leveled.
To activate the tilt function, confirm by pressing the "TILT" button. Only then can you proceed.
For working conditions with disturbances (e.g., vibrating surfaces), it is recommended to use the "automatic mode with re-leveling" setting.
5.2 Automatisk modus med etternivellering (Automatic Mode with Re-leveling)
In certain working conditions (e.g., tremors, vibrations in the surface), the tilt function can be a hindrance. With automatic re-leveling, displacements caused by disturbances are corrected automatically.
Place the laser apparatus in the working position (vertical or horizontal). Press the ON/OFF button once. Press the "TILT" button to deactivate the tilt function. The green LED indicates that the apparatus is in use, and the laser beam blinks. When leveling is complete, the laser beam lights up continuously and begins to rotate.
Diagram Description: Shows the laser device with TILT and MAN buttons. An arrow indicates pressing ON/OFF once. The TILT button is shown being pressed to deactivate tilt function. A blinking laser line is shown, then a continuous rotating laser line.
In case of high interference/displacements, the laser beam stops rotating. The laser beam blinks. The laser apparatus re-levels. After leveling is complete, the laser beam begins to rotate again.
Diagram Description: Shows the laser device with TILT and MAN buttons. The TILT LED is shown blinking red, indicating disturbance. The laser beam is shown blinking. Then the laser beam rotates continuously.
With inclinations of ≥ 5°, the laser apparatus is outside the self-leveling range and cannot level automatically. Possible deviations from the original adjustment / setting of the laser apparatus are not displayed (-> tilt function).
Pressing the "TILT" button again reactivates the tilt function.
5.3 Manuell drift (Manual Mode)
In manual mode, the tilt function and re-leveling are deactivated. The laser apparatus is adjusted manually only. No leveling will be performed!
Place the laser apparatus in the working position (vertical or horizontal). Press the ON/OFF button once. The green LED indicates that the apparatus is in use, and the laser beam blinks. The white "TILT" LED blinks. Press the "MAN" button to deactivate the tilt function and automatic leveling. The white "MAN" LED lights up continuously. The laser beam rotates.
Diagram Description: Shows the laser device with TILT and MAN buttons. An arrow indicates pressing ON/OFF once. The TILT LED blinks. Then the MAN button is pressed. The MAN LED lights up, and the laser beam rotates.
The laser level can be adjusted by measuring or sighting. With the tilt wedge (optional accessory), setting the inclination can be simplified.
Diagram Description: Shows a person using the laser device. Another diagram shows the laser beam projected onto a surface. A third diagram shows the laser device with a tilt wedge accessory.
Pressing the "MAN" button again deactivates manual mode. The apparatus returns to mode 6.1 "Automatic mode with tilt function".
6. Funksjoner (Functions)
Rotasjonsfunksjon (Rotation Function)
The laser beam rotates 360° around its own axis.
- horizontal
- vertical
Diagram Description: Shows the laser device rotating horizontally and vertically, projecting a 360° beam.
Rett vinkel (90°) (Right Angle (90°))
In vertical mode, the point laser and the rotation level form a 90° angle. This allows for measuring right angles.
Diagram Description: Shows the laser device in vertical mode projecting a point laser downwards and a horizontal rotation beam, forming a 90° angle.
Loddefunksjon (Plumb Function)
Transfers a defined point from the floor to the ceiling. To transfer the plumb point from a floor marking to the ceiling, position the laser apparatus so that the four markers (10) are precisely aligned with the crosshair. The intersection point of the crosshair corresponds to the plumb laser beam. Correct results are only possible in automatic mode and on a level surface.
Diagram Description: Shows the laser device projecting a plumb beam upwards. A close-up shows the alignment markers (10) on the device being aligned with a crosshair on the floor, indicating the plumb point.
7. LED-indikasjoner (LED Indicators)

8. Kontroll av nøyaktighet (Accuracy Control)
8.1 Kontroll av nøyaktighet (Accuracy Control)
The STABILA LAR 160 / LAR 160 G rotary laser is intended for use on construction sites and is delivered in a perfectly adjusted state. The accuracy calibration, like all precision instruments, must be checked regularly. Always check the apparatus before use, especially if it has been subjected to strong vibrations.
- Horizontal Control
- Vertical Control
8.2 Horisontalkontroll (Horizontal Control)
Checking the line level of the horizontal laser line. Observe the specified positioning of the apparatus as accurately as possible.
- Place the LAR 160 / LAR 160 G on a horizontal surface at a distance of at least 10 m from a wall, or mount it on a tripod with the control panel facing the wall.
- Switch on the laser apparatus and wait for it to complete automatic leveling.
- Mark the visible midpoint of the laser line on the wall – measurement 1 (point 1). You can also do this with a receiver.
- Rotate the entire laser apparatus 90° without changing the height of the laser (i.e., do not change the tripod height). Let the apparatus complete automatic leveling again.
- Mark the visible midpoint of the laser line on the wall (point 2).
- Repeat steps 4 and 5 twice to find points 3 and 4.
- If the difference between the four control points is less than 2 mm over 10 m, the tolerance for the laser apparatus of ± 0.1 mm/m is met. Points 1 and 3 for the apparatus's X-axis correspond to points 2 and 4 for the apparatus's Y-axis.
Diagram Description: Shows a sequence of steps for checking horizontal accuracy. The laser device is placed 10m from a wall. Marks are made on the wall after rotating the device by 90° multiple times. A graphic shows the maximum allowed difference of 2mm over 10m.
8.3 Vertikalkontroll (Vertical Control)
Checking the vertical plumb laser. You need two parallel walls with a distance S of at least 10 m to perform the vertical control.
- To perform vertical leveling directly in front of wall A, place the rotary laser on its side support feet. The LAR 160 / LAR 160 G can also be mounted on a tripod.
- Switch on the laser apparatus.
- After automatic leveling, the laser point is marked on wall A. Marking 1.
- Then rotate the LAR 160 / LAR 160 G by 180° and point the plumb laser at wall B. The height adjustment must not be changed.
- After automatic leveling, the plumb laser point is marked on wall B. Marking 2.
- Now immediately move the laser apparatus in front of wall B. Set the LAR 160 / LAR 160 G with the plumb laser pointing at wall B.
- After automatic leveling, adjust the plumb laser point by rotating and adjusting the height so that it exactly covers mark 2.
- Then rotate the LAR 160 / LAR 160 G by 180° and point the plumb laser at wall A. The height adjustment must not be changed.
- Adjust the plumb laser point by rotating the apparatus so that it exactly covers the marking line for mark 1.
- After automatic leveling, the plumb laser point is marked on wall A. Marking 3.
- The vertical distance between mark 1 and 3 is measured.
If the distance between walls A and B is 10 m, the distance between points 1 and 3 must not exceed 2 mm.
Formula: 0.1 mm/m ≥ |P1 - P3| / 2s
Diagram Description: Shows a sequence of steps for checking vertical accuracy using two walls (A and B) 10m apart. Marks are made on the walls after rotating the device. A final measurement is taken between marks 1 and 3. A formula and tolerance are provided.
