Getting Started

Indications for Use

Mito Red Lights are general wellness devices and are not intended to cure or diagnose any medical conditions. Use of this device is designed to help promote overall health and wellness by supporting cellular function. Mito Red Lights should only be operated based on the user guidelines, as outlined in this user manual.

First Time Users

For first-time users, we recommend doing a light sensitivity test. If the test shows no reaction, start with 2 to 4-minute sessions per area, and slowly work up to a 10 to 15-minute session over 2 to 3 weeks as your body acclimates to the therapy.

To check if you are light-sensitive:

  • Power on the device.
  • Apply the device to your skin, ensuring the light shines onto it, for a 3-minute session.
  • After the session, visually check the area. If you experience pain, discomfort, or redness lasting more than 2 hours, you might be light-sensitive. Consult a doctor for advice.

Standard Use

Mito Red Original 2.0: We recommend 10-minute sessions at 6-12 inches from your device.

Additional 10-minute sessions for specific areas may be beneficial, but beyond a certain point, scientific evidence suggests diminishing returns. More is not always better.

We recommend allowing at least 6 hours between sessions on the same area. Limit sessions to no more than 15 minutes. Use the device 4-6 times per week, taking at least one day off per week.

Because the LEDs are very bright, wear eye protection when looking directly towards the light, particularly when NIR is active.

Maintenance

The Mito Red Light® requires minimal maintenance beyond basic care and regular cleaning. To clean, unplug the light and wipe the surface with a cloth or paper towel. Do not use harsh cleaning chemicals or bleach, as they may damage the light. Ensure the light is dry before using it again. For safety, the light is intended for indoor use only.

Contraindications

Contraindications for Red Light Therapy

There are no industry-wide accepted contraindications for red light therapy designated or enforced by regulatory agencies. Research is ongoing, and contraindications are derived from existing research and clinical inferences.

Potential Hazards

  • Heat: Red light therapy generates thermal energy as light is absorbed, which may present a hazard in some conditions.
  • Light: The electromagnetic radiation used is low in energy but may affect light-sensitive tissues.
  • Tissue Stimulation: Red light therapy is intended to stimulate tissues, which may be undesirable in some disease states.

Absolute Contraindications

  • Recent Burns: Recent burns may still contain residual thermal energy that could be increased by red light therapy.
  • Malignant Cancers: There is a theoretical risk that red light therapy may increase cell proliferation in malignant cancers.
  • Hyperthyroidism (Neck & Upper Chest): Red light therapy on the neck and upper chest may increase thyroid activity in individuals with hyperthyroidism.
  • Pregnancy (Abdomen): The effects of red light therapy on a developing fetus are not fully understood and may potentially have a negative effect.
  • Eye Disease (Eyes): The effects on various eye conditions are not fully understood, and light-sensitive cells in the eyes may respond unfavorably to intense red light.
  • Light Sensitivity: Individuals with rare conditions causing extreme sensitivity to light or who have previously reacted to red light therapy should avoid its use.

Relative Contraindications

  • Fever or Infection: Theoretical risk of worsening existing hyperthermia.
  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): SLE can cause skin sensitivity, increasing the risk of a reaction.
  • Severe Bleeding or Blood Loss: Some research suggests red light therapy may slow the body's ability to stop bleeding.
  • Photosensitizing Medications: Medications increasing light sensitivity may increase risks.
  • Tattoos: Red light therapy may cause cosmetic defects to body art, especially with red inks prone to fading. Tattoo ink may also cause uneven absorption.
  • Dark Skin Pigmentation: The effect is still being studied. Darker skin tones may absorb more light, leading to increased warmth. A smaller amount of red light may reach deeper tissues, but this effect is unlikely to be large.
  • Dark Hair: Darker hair may absorb more light, causing increased warmth and decreased penetration. This effect is unlikely to be large.
  • Melasma / Hyperpigmentation: Some studies show improvement, but rare instances may cause the opposite effect. Start slowly and use red light only if this is a concern.

Anyone with a contraindication or health condition should consult their physician before using red light therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is Red Light Therapy Safe? Are There Side Effects?

Mito Red Light uses clinically proven red and near-infrared wavelengths, which are effective and safe. Always consult your healthcare provider for specific questions about concerns or health conditions.

Do I Need Safety Glasses With This Light?

While research suggests benefits for certain eye conditions, Mito Red's lights are very bright. Eye protection is provided and should be worn when facing the lights, especially when NIR is active. Do not stare directly into the light emitting diodes (LEDs). If you have eye problems or other health conditions, consult a licensed healthcare professional before using the device.

Will Light Therapy Sessions Cause Detox Symptoms?

It's possible to experience detox-related symptoms as your body acclimates. If this occurs, stop use until symptoms subside. Start with 2-3 minute sessions per area and gradually increase to 10 minutes over 2-3 weeks. If symptoms persist or you have concerns, consult your healthcare provider. A 60-day trial and refund policy is available.

Are the NIR LEDs Not Working?

NIR is beyond the visible spectrum and invisible to the naked eye. You may see a pink dot or subtle pink glow from the LEDs when they are on. Significant light energy is emitted, and the device is working as designed.

Images show phone camera views of the panel: "Panel off" and "NIR on only".

Light Therapy Overview

What is Red and Near Infrared Light Therapy?

Red and near-infrared light are part of the electromagnetic spectrum, specifically the part emitted by the sun. These wavelengths are "bioactive" in humans.

Below is a chart outlining the electromagnetic spectrum:

Diagram showing the electromagnetic spectrum with ranges for Gamma rays, X-rays, Infrared, Microwave, Radio, and their corresponding frequencies and wavelengths.

Remembering high school physics, white light passed through a prism separates into colors based on wavelengths (ROYGBIV). Only a small part of this spectrum (400nm to 700nm) is visible to the human eye.

Diagram of the visible light spectrum chart (HEV Blue Light to Red) showing wavelength in nanometers.

At the highest end of the visible spectrum is red light (approx. 600nm to 700nm). Above the visible spectrum is near-infrared (NIR) (approx. 700nm to 1,100nm).

These red and near-infrared wavelengths have significant effects on our bodies. Most research uses wavelengths in the ranges of 620-680nm (red) and 800-880nm (NIR).

Thousands of studies in animals and humans show that red and near-infrared light have repeatedly demonstrated positive effects on cell function and aid in improving a wide range of conditions.

It's all about PENETRATION.

Most light wavelengths (UV, blue, green, yellow, etc.) do not penetrate the body deeply, staying in the skin's outer layers. Red and near-infrared light, however, penetrate deeper, reaching cells, tissues, blood, nerves, bones, and even the brain.

Diagram showing light penetration depths into skin layers (Epidermis, Dermis, Hypodermis) with corresponding wavelengths and color ranges.

Benefits of Red Light

Red light (600-700nm) offers benefits for skin texture and tone, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, promoting collagen production, and rejuvenating skin and hair appearance.

Benefits of Near-Infrared Light

Near-infrared light (NIR) (700nm - 1100nm) penetrates deeper into tissues to assist with wound healing, muscle recovery, nerve injury, and joint pain.

Red Light Boosts Cellular Energy Production

The most well-studied mechanism is increased mitochondrial energy production in cells. Mitochondria are the energy power plants of cells. Red and near-infrared light therapy helps mitochondria create more energy.

Specific photons in red and near-infrared light interact with a photoreceptor called cytochrome c oxidase. This interaction stimulates mitochondria to use oxygen more efficiently, producing more ATP (adenosine triphosphate). ATP provides energy for cellular processes like muscle contraction and nerve impulse propagation. ATP is often called the "molecular unit of currency" for intracellular energy transfer. When cells have more energy, they perform better.
