Getting Started
Indications for Use
Mito Red Lights are general wellness devices and are not intended to cure or diagnose any medical conditions. Use of this device is designed to help promote overall health and wellness by supporting cellular function. Mito Red Lights should only be operated based on the user guidelines, as outlined in this user manual.
First Time Users
For first-time users, it is recommended to perform a light sensitivity test. If the test shows no reaction, begin with 2 to 4-minute sessions per area and gradually increase to 10 to 15-minute sessions over 2 to 3 weeks as your body acclimates.
Light Sensitivity Test:
- Power on the device.
- Apply the device to your skin for a 3-minute session.
- After the session, visually check the area. If you experience pain, discomfort, or redness lasting more than 2 hours, you may be light-sensitive. Consult a doctor for advice.
DO NOT use if currently using retinol, acids (like AHAs or BHAs), or any products that can increase skin photosensitivity. See CONTRAINDICATIONS page for more details.
Standard Use
Recommended sessions are 10 minutes at a distance of 12-18 inches from the device. Additional sessions for specific areas may be beneficial, but scientific evidence suggests diminishing returns beyond a certain point. More is not always better.
- Allow at least 6 hours between sessions on the same area.
- Recommend no more than 15 minutes in any one session.
- Use the device 4-6 times per week.
- Take at least one day off per week.
Eye Protection: Because the LEDs are very bright, eye protection should be worn when looking directly towards the light, particularly when NIR is active. [eye] [protection]
Contraindications
There are no industry-wide accepted contraindications for red light therapy designated or enforced by regulatory agencies. Contraindications are derived from existing research and clinical inferences.
Potential Hazards
- Heat: Red light therapy generates thermal energy, which may present a hazard in some conditions.
- Light: The electromagnetic radiation is low in energy but may affect light-sensitive tissues.
- Tissue Stimulation: Red light therapy is intended to stimulate tissues; this may be undesirable in some disease states.
Absolute Contraindications
- Recent Burns: May contain residual thermal energy that can be increased by heat from therapy.
- Malignant Cancers: Theoretical risk of increasing cell proliferation.
- Hyperthyroidism (Neck & Upper Chest): May increase thyroid activity.
- Pregnancy (Abdomen): Effects on developing fetus are not fully understood.
- Eye Disease (Eyes): Effects on various eye conditions are not fully understood; light-sensitive cells may respond unfavorably.
- Light Sensitivity: Individuals with rare conditions causing extreme sensitivity or previous adverse reactions should avoid use.
Relative Contraindications
- Fever or Infection: Theoretical risk of worsening existing hyperthermia.
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): Can cause skin sensitivity, increasing reaction risk.
- Severe Bleeding or Blood Loss: Some research suggests it may slow the body's ability to stop bleeding.
- Tattoos: May cause cosmetic defects, especially with red inks (fading). Ink may cause uneven absorption.
- Dark Skin Pigmentation: Still being studied; darker skin may absorb more light, leading to warmth. Deeper tissue penetration may be reduced.
- Use of Photosensitizing Medications: May increase risks of light sensitivity.
- Dark Hair: May absorb more light, increasing warmth and decreasing penetration. Effect is not likely to be large.
- Melasma / Hyperpigmentation: While studies show improvement, rare instances can cause opposite effects. Start slowly and use red light only if concerned. Refer to the article "Red Light Therapy & Hyperpigmentation" for details.
Anyone with a contraindication or any health condition should consult with their physician before using red light therapy.
FAQs
Is Red Light Therapy Safe? Are There Side Effects?
Mito Red Light uses clinically proven red and near-infrared wavelengths that are effective and safe. However, always consult with your healthcare provider for specific questions about your health conditions.
Do I Need Safety Glasses with This Light?
While research suggests modest amounts of red and NIR LED light may benefit certain eye conditions, Mito Red's plug-in lights are very bright. Eye protection is provided and should be worn when facing the lights, particularly when NIR is active. DO NOT stare directly into the light emitting diodes (LEDs). Consult a licensed healthcare professional if you have eye problems or other health conditions before using the device.
Are the NIR LEDs Not Working?
NIR is beyond the visible spectrum and invisible to the naked eye. You will see a pink dot or subtle pink glow from the LEDs when they are on. Significant light energy is emanating from these LEDs, and the device is working as designed. A helpful tip: take a picture of the panel with NIR on only; you will see the bulbs illuminating.
Note: The 'yellow' 590 nm light may appear green as eyes and brain adjust to bright light. This is normal for the 590nm LEDs.
Will Light Therapy Treatments Cause Detox Symptoms?
It is possible to experience detox-related symptoms as your body acclimates. If this occurs, stop use until symptoms subside. Then, start with 2-3 minute sessions per area and gradually increase to 10 minutes over 2-3 weeks. If symptoms persist or you have concerns, stop use and consult your healthcare provider. A full 60-day no-hassle trial and refund policy is available.
What If My Skin Is Burned or Damaged?
Red light therapy has been clinically proven to help damaged skin heal from cuts, burns, and other blemishes. Consult your healthcare provider if you have concerns. As Mito Red Light are not licensed healthcare practitioners, they cannot offer definitive clinical guidance. Consult your trusted healthcare provider with specific questions.
What If I Have a Pre-existing Health Condition or Take Medications?
Mito Red Lights are classified as general wellness devices. Out of an abundance of caution, consult your healthcare provider if you have pre-existing conditions or take photosensitizing drugs. Steroids suppress the immune system, while red light therapy may stimulate it. To the extent these therapies may work against each other, they are not recommended for use together.
Can Pregnant or Nursing Women Use the Lights?
As there has been no clinical research on pregnant or nursing subjects, do not use the device if pregnant or lactating before consulting with your healthcare provider.
Can Children Use Mito Red Light®?
Clinical studies show red and NIR light therapy to be safe. However, if considering use with children, consult a healthcare professional. All treatments with children should be done under adult supervision.
Maintenance
The Mito Red Light® requires basic care and regular cleaning. Unplug the light and wipe the surface with a cloth or paper towel. Do not use harsh cleaning chemicals or bleach, as they may damage the light. Ensure the light is dry before use. The light is intended for indoor use only.
Other Considerations: Botox, Breast Implants and Lasik
- Users with a history of facial fillers and/or Botox injections should consult their dermatologist prior to use.
- Users with breast implants should consult their plastic surgeon prior to use.

Light Therapy Overview
What is Red and Near Infrared Light Therapy?
Red and near-infrared light are parts of the electromagnetic spectrum emitted by the sun. These wavelengths are "bioactive" in humans.
When white light passes through a prism, it separates into different colors based on wavelengths (ROYGBIV). Only a small portion of this spectrum (roughly 400nm to 700nm) is visible to the human eye.
Red light is at the higher end of the visible spectrum, with wavelengths from just over 600nm to approximately 700nm. Near-infrared (NIR) is above the visible spectrum, from about 700nm to just over 1,100nm.
These specific red and near-infrared wavelengths have significant effects on the body. Most research demonstrating benefits uses wavelengths in the ranges of 620-680nm (red) and 800-880nm (NIR).
Thousands of studies in animals and humans have repeatedly shown positive effects of red and near-infrared light on cell function and aid in improving a wide range of conditions.
Penetration Depth
Most wavelengths of light (UV, blue, green, yellow, etc.) stay on the skin's surface and cannot penetrate the body. However, red and near-infrared light can penetrate deeper into the human body, reaching cells, tissues, blood, nerves, bones, and even the brain.
Red Light Boosts Cellular Energy Production
The most well-studied mechanism of action for red and near-infrared light therapy is increased mitochondrial energy production in cells. Mitochondria are the "power plants" of our cells. Red and near-infrared light therapy helps mitochondria create more energy.
The photons in red and near-infrared light interact with a photoreceptor called cytochrome c oxidase within our cells. This interaction stimulates mitochondria to use oxygen more efficiently, producing more ATP (adenosine triphosphate). ATP is the "molecular unit of currency" for intracellular energy transfer, driving processes like muscle contraction and nerve impulse propagation. When cells have more energy, they perform better, and the body follows suit.
