Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

SIM Cards

  • What size SIM card should I use? A Nano sized SIM card is required. Only the Nano SIM will fit the router.
  • Do I need a SIM card to operate the Wi-Fi? For cel tower internet connectivity, an activated SIM is required. If you are only sending information to a Wi-Fi device (like a printer), a SIM is not needed.
  • Can my DishyDock Router connect via a SIM card? No, the DishyDock Router works exclusively with the Starlink Antenna and Cable.

Internet Source

  • How do I know what is providing my internet? If your Starlink Antenna Cable is plugged in, Starlink is your source. If the cable is removed and you have cel tower access, the 4G/5G connection provides internet (for 4G/5G routers).
  • Router Restart: Always turn your router off and on again after making SIM card adjustments to ensure it re-reads the card.

SSIDs

  • What is an SSID? The SSID is the NAME of your router.
  • Why are there two SSIDs? Your RV Wi-Fi 5G unit broadcasts two SSIDs: 'RV WIFI 5G abc123' (2.4GHz) and 'RV WIFI abc123' (5.8GHz). The 5.8GHz frequency is newer and faster but has less range, while the 2.4GHz frequency has been around longer, is slightly slower, but offers better range. It is recommended to connect to the 5.8GHz network first if available.
  • Do I have to set up Wi-Fi passwords on both SSIDs? Yes, you will need to set a password for each SSID to ensure seamless connectivity for all your devices.

Troubleshooting and Resetting

  • Resetting: If experiencing issues, try turning the router off and on again. This can re-establish the connection and resolve problems. Allow 4-5 minutes for the router to reboot.
  • Factory Reset: Press and hold the reset button (located on the main control panel near the SIM card slot) for 10 seconds. Release the button and wait 3 minutes. Then, turn the router OFF, wait 3 minutes, and turn it ON. After rebooting, the SSID may change (e.g., to 'WIFIabc123'). Connect using the default password rvwifi1234.
  • Operational Issues (No Internet):
    • Check if the correct Nano SIM card size was inserted.
    • Ensure the SIM card has been activated. Test it in another device if unsure.
    • Verify the SIM card has sufficient data and has not expired. Contact your service provider.
    • If none of the above, there might be a fault with the modem.
  • Troubleshooting Connection:
    • Turn on the RV Wi-Fi router.
    • On your device, go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
    • Look for your RV Wi-Fi SSID (e.g., 'RV Wi-Fi123abc').
    • If your device has connected before, it should connect automatically. If it's the first connection, enter the default password rvwifi1234.
    • If you cannot connect, perform a reset and try again.
    • Open a new web page and navigate to http://10.0.1.1.
    • Log in with username 'root' and password 'admin'.
    • Navigate to 'Overview' and take a screenshot of the 'IPV4 Upstream' section. Send this to info@rvwifi.com.au with details of your issue.
  • Wi-Fi Not Connecting: This could be due to the Wi-Fi being accidentally deleted during setup (requiring reactivation) or entering a personal password instead of 'admin' for the router login.
  • Changing ROOT Username: The 'root' username cannot be changed. Security is maintained as the router interface (http://10.0.1.1) is only accessible with the Wi-Fi password.
  • Wi-Fi Password Not Accepted: Perform a factory reset. Ensure your password is at least 8 characters and is case-sensitive. Be mindful of devices that auto-capitalize the first letter.

External Antenna Information

  • Maximum Gain: The external antenna has a maximum gain of 6db in fringe reception areas. It contains four antennas: 2 for 3G/4G/5G and 2 for Wi-Fi.
  • Omni-directional Antenna: It provides coverage in a circular horizontal direction. The Wi-Fi antenna offers a range of up to 40 metres from the RV.
  • Adjustments: Antenna lengths can be adjusted with assistance from an auto electrician.
  • Compatibility: You can attach a different external antenna, provided the SMA connectors match.

General Information

  • Data Usage: High data usage can be caused by unauthorized access to your Wi-Fi, automatic software updates (disable auto-updates), VPN connections maintaining a 'heartbeat', or high-bandwidth activities like video conferencing (approx. 1GB/hour). Consider reviewing your data plan.
  • Coverage: Coverage depends on the data provider. Check your provider's website for coverage maps.
  • Software Updates: New features and improvements are made available on the RV Wi-Fi website. Follow their Facebook page for notifications.
  • Placement: Place the external antenna clear of high objects. Position the router and antenna at least 2 metres away from solar inverters.
  • Device Connections: The router supports up to 50 concurrent Wi-Fi device connections.
  • External Hard Drive: RV Wi-Fi has been tested with external hard drives up to 1TB.
  • RV Wi-Fi vs. Phone Hotspot: RV Wi-Fi is designed for RV living, offering a wired 12V supply (no chargers needed), superior coverage, and no impact on your phone's data plan or bill shock.
