Phonak Serenity Choice Hearing Protection
A Sonova brand
A World Full of Noise and Loud Sounds
Approximately 1.1 billion people worldwide are at risk of noise-induced hearing loss.
In the USA alone, 22 million workers report hazardous noise in the workplace.
How Loud is Too Loud?
70% of people exposed to loud noise never or rarely wear hearing protection.
Excessive noise exposure above 85 dB can lead to hearing damage. Loud noises, whether prolonged or short-term, can cause fatigue of the sensory hair cells in the ear, potentially leading to temporary hearing loss or tinnitus. If the volume exceeds safe limits, it can cause permanent damage to the sensory cells, resulting in irreversible hearing loss.

How to Choose the Right Serenity Choice
Step 1: Determine the Area of Application
- Music: Concerts, open-air events, festivals, performances; musicians, music lovers, concert-goers.
- Work: DIY and gardening; industry, factories, agriculture; road construction, civil engineering.
- Shooting & Hunting: Sport shooting, hunting; impulse noises.
- Motorsport: Motorsport activities; racing events.
- Fly & Travel: Airplanes, public transport.
- Comfort: Open spaces, open-plan offices; schools, lecture halls.
- Sleep: Snoring; traffic, street noise, construction noise.
- Swim: Swimming, surfing, water sports.
Step 2: Universal or Custom-Fit
- Universal: Serenity Choice hearing protection is a great entry-level product for occasional use. Available for 8 areas of application.
- Custom-Fit: Serenity Choice Plus is ideal for those who need hearing protection constantly and for whom fit and comfort are paramount. Serenity Choice Plus also offers different filter options with varying levels of protection.
Step 3: Choose the Level of Protection
This applies only to custom-fit products from Serenity Choice Plus.
Consider the following factors when selecting the most suitable filter/damping level:
- Level of noise exposure
- Whether communication is also required
- Duration of noise exposure
Example: A sound technician is exposed to loud music for 3 to 4 hours a day. We know that the maximum noise exposure that can be safely endured for 4 hours is 88 dBA. To work in this environment for 4 hours, 12 dB of protection is required. Serenity Choice Plus with a KM15 filter would be sufficient. However, if the person stays in this environment longer, they will need more protection.

Motorsport
The Serenity Choice Motorsport hearing protection was specially developed for motorcyclists and reduces motor, wind, and helmet noise to a safe level. At speeds of 100 km/h, the noise level inside the helmet can reach 95 to 100 dB. This can be harmful to your hearing after just 15 minutes. The filters reduce harmful noise while still allowing clear speech intelligibility over the radio. They are comfortable and secure, making them perfect for all-day rides or motorsport events.

Shooting & Hunting
The Shooting & Hunting impulse filters allow for the differentiation of various noise levels and ensure that you can perceive essential environmental sounds such as rustling leaves or breaking twigs. When firing a shot, your ears are protected from harmful peak sound pressure, allowing you to remain alert and safe.
For impulse noises like gunshots, the Impulse Peak Input Loss (IPIL) provides a more accurate measurement than conventional SNR/NRR ratings. IPIL assesses how effectively hearing protection dampens high-level impulse noises in different decibel ranges.

¹ SNR (Single Number Rating): The term used in the European standard EN-352-2 to express the overall attenuation of a hearing protector in a single number. NRR (Noise Reduction Rating): The term used in the American standard ANSI S3.19:1974 to express the overall attenuation of a hearing protector in a single number. SNR and NRR differ slightly from each other because different formulas are used to derive them. For the graphs, we have used the average of CE and ANSI.
