DCOTA

DCOTA is Apple's Platform for managing demo content on in-store devices over the air. It delivers great features like automatic updates and nightly refreshes. Here's all you need to get started with DCOTA.

  1. Check Network

    To get set up, we need you to do a test to make sure the store Wi-Fi or Available Demo SIMs will give a great experience on DCOTA.

  2. Prepare Demo Units

    To enrol in DCOTA, you need to reset the demo device to factory settings.

    Demo devices can be reset by a special method below.

    Reset demo units using the hidden screensaver gesture here (p.8).

  3. Enrol in DCOTA

    Now that your devices are ready, you can enrol in DCOTA. To do that you'll need the demo unit, and one other device (Any device: iPhone, PC, Tablet, Android).

DCOTA Checklist — What you'll need

To set up devices on DCOTA, here is a list of things you will need. Ensure you have these prepared for your enrolments. Also take note of the device legend below; it's important to know when to use a separate device to enrol, and when to use the demo devices.

Before unboxing new units, go to demounit.apple.com and enrol units. Guide below (Page 10).

Running a Network Check

Downloading the app on an iOS device

  1. Sign into site

    Navigate to demounit.apple.com using Safari.

    Sign in with an Apple ID and password (any will work). Don't have one? Make one here: https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT204316.

  2. Menu

    Tap the two-dash icon in the top left corner to reveal a drop-down list menu.

    Tap the support menu option.

  3. Network Check link

    Tap on the Network Check link.

    A dialog box will appear: demounit.apple.com would like to install "NetworkCheck".

  4. Tap install to begin download

Authenticating the app for use

  1. Untrusted Enterprise Developer

    When you first open the NetworkCheck app, an Untrusted Enterprise Developer message will pop up.

    Tap Cancel from the dialog box.

  2. Go to Settings

    From the Home screen, select Settings > General > Device Management.

    Tap Apple Inc-Demo Units.

  3. Apple Inc-Demo Units

    Tap Trust "Apple Inc-Demo Units".

  4. Trust App on this Device Message

    Tap Trust.

Running a Network Check

How to perform the test

  1. Connect to store network

    From the Home screen, tap Settings.

    Tap Wi-Fi and ensure it is turned on.

    Once Wi-Fi is on, connect to the in-store network.

    Ensure that this is the same network that will be used for store demo devices.

  2. NetworkCheck app start screen

    Launch the NetworkCheck app from the home screen.

    If you have successfully turned on Wi-Fi from the previous step, the start screen should display the Wi-Fi Network Name.

    Tap "Test Wifi" to begin NetworkCheck testing.

  3. Location Accuracy

    Once testing is complete (this will take several minutes), a dialog box will pop up notifying you: Allow "NetworkCheck" to access your location?

    Tap Allow While Using App to proceed.

  4. Review results

    Your in-store network assessment has been completed.

    Tap Submit to finalize and forward your results. After this, a prompt to select a store appears.

How to submit the results

  1. Confirm store

    Tap Select Store Location.

  2. Search for store

    If a store doesn't appear, search for it. Enter the company name.

    If you still can't find your store, scroll to the bottom of the list and tap Enter Store Details.

  3. Fill out manual entry form

    Complete the form by entering:

    • Country
    • Apple ID or Store #
    • Store Address
    • Select Done
  4. Submit Network Check

    Tap Submit.

If network check passes, you can proceed to enrol your demo devices.

If it fails, test again or try a different network. If unable to pass, call 1800 954 167 to raise a support ticket for network exception (provide screenshot).

Resetting a Factory Demo Device

Preparing an already merchandised device for DCOTA

  1. 3-Finger Gesture

    On the screensaver, place 3 fingers in the position above for ~10 seconds.

    Make sure the screensaver doesn't close before the gesture is complete; if you touch the screen incorrectly or move the device, it will close.

    A hidden menu appears with options if performed correctly.

  2. Resetting Device

    Once the menu appears, tap 'Reset' to have the phone restore to factory settings.

  3. Device Reset

    The device will take 2-5 minutes to complete the 'Reset' process.

  4. Device Restored

    Once the Demo Device has been reset, it will appear with the above screen.

    From here, you are ready to enrol in DCOTA. Do not proceed further on the Demo Device; follow the DCOTA Enrolment Guide.

Using an Enrolment Device

Do not use demo device for these steps

  1. Go to demounit.apple.com on device other than Demo unit

    Can be PC, Mac, Android, iOS.

    Login with an Apple ID email address and password. Any Apple ID works; it could be a personal, work, or SEED account. Don't have one? Make one here: https://support.apple.com/en-au/

  2. Manage devices screen

    If this screen appears, click or tap the two-dash icon.

    NOTE: If this screen does not appear, move to step 3.

  3. Click or tap Add a new device

    Click or tap Add a new device from the menu.

  4. DCOTA device registration

    Enter the serial number of the Demo Device.

    Click or tap Continue to proceed.

To get serial number from restored Demo device, tap the "i" (info) on the bottom right.

1. Register a Demo Device to a Store

Using an Enrolment Device

  1. Choose a country

    Enter or select the Demo Device store country.

    Alternatively, if the Store Apple ID is known, enter the Store Apple ID to navigate directly to the correct store.

  2. Choose a Company

    Enter or select the Demo Device company name.

  3. Select a Store, then tap Enrol at this store location

    Enter or select the Demo Device store name.

    Click or tap Enrol at this store location to proceed.

  4. DCOTA device PIN generation

    DCOTA device PIN generation.

    • If prompted, select desired Demo Device language and bundle type, then click or tap Continue.
    • If not prompted for Demo Device language or bundle type, a unique registration PIN for device enrolment is generated.
    • Switch to the Demo Device.

2. Enrol a Demo Device to DCOTA

Using the Demo Device

Factory Demo

  1. Hello

    Swipe up or press home to set up the new Demo Device.

    REMINDER: A SIM card is necessary for activation. If using eSIM, set up phone normally, add eSIM, erase and keep, and go through the enrolment process again.

  2. Choose language

    Tap or select Demo Device language.

  3. Select Your Country or Region

    Tap or select Demo Device Country.

  4. Quick Start - Set Up Manually

    From the Quick Start menu, tap or select Set Up Manually.

    IMPORTANT: Be sure to tap or select Set Up Manually, or the Demo Device will need to be reset, and the enrolment steps will need to be repeated from step 1 of this guide.

2. Enrol a Demo Device to DCOTA

Using the Demo Device

  1. Choose a Wi-Fi Network

    Tap or select the store staff provided demo Wi-Fi network.

    Or, Enrol and activate Demo Device using Cellular.

  2. Activation

    Demo Device will start the activation process and initiate DCOTA Demo Device registration.

    IMPORTANT: If this step is performed without first prompting for a PIN on demounit.apple.com, the Demo Device will need to be reset, and the enrolment steps will need to be repeated from step 1 of this guide.

  3. Demo Registration - Enter PIN

    Switch back to the enrolment device that you have been using to get the 6-digit code.

    Enter the PIN previously generated into the Demo Device.

  4. Reference DCOTA device registration PIN

    Reference the DCOTA device registration PIN as previously described in step 7 of this guide from the Enrolment Device.

    Enter the unique PIN on the Demo Device as shown in figure 14.

2. Enrol a Demo Device to DCOTA

Using the Demo Device

  1. Demo update in progress

    The above blocking screen will appear when the Demo Device connects, to download the latest demo content.

    The device will be unusable while this UI is visible.

    The iOS device may restart several times while updates are in progress.

  2. DCOTA Device Enrolment Successful and Complete

    If successfully enrolled to DCOTA, the DemoLoop ScreenSaver app will appear when the device is locked.

  3. DCOTA Device Enrolment Failed

    If the Demo Setup dialog box appears, it is very likely that an incorrect configuration/network was chosen during the device enrolment process.

    Tap or select Ok to close connection to the Hub.

  4. Reset or Restore Device to Factory Settings, THEN go back to Step 1

    The Demo Device will need to be reset, and the enrolment steps will need to be repeated from step 1 of this guide.
