Display Example: Group Call (With Stored Contact)
The display shows "Group Call", "RUDY", and "IW2BSF" with "Professional FM Transceiver" below.
When contacts are stored in the 250 memories in the CPS, the display shows:
The main difference between the GD-77 and RD-5R is in STANDBY mode. With "Double Wait" set to "Off", the GD-77 shows the Zone on line A and the Channel on line B. This is more useful than the RD-5R, which shows channel A and channel B information on those lines.
It appears that the CCD and RD-5R firmware do not support the "Off" setting for Double Watch / Wait. This functionality should be corrected in the RD-5R firmware and software to work correctly, similar to the GD-77.
During DMR RX, it is necessary to see Talkgroup and ID information, not just the second line showing the channel/frequency not in use. This should be an easy fix as it already works in the GD-77 and partially in the RD-5R software.
A ZONE is a channel group where channels with the same attributes (e.g., call type, digital or analog mode) can be included. This radio supports 250 ZONES, each capable of containing 16 Channels.
Zones can be selected in two ways:
Press the VFO/MR key to switch to MR (Channel) mode, then use the Up/Down arrow keys (▲/▼) to select the desired channel, user alias, ID, or Call Group ID.
In standby mode, press the VFO/MR key to enter VFO (Frequency) mode. Here, you can directly input the frequency and then save it to a channel if desired. Alternatively, you can directly input the frequency using the numeric keypad.
VFO Mode is the basic mode for operating by frequency. In standby mode, press VFO/MR and use the Up/Down arrow keys (▲/▼) to navigate frequencies.
The radio can store both digital and analog frequencies, with a maximum capacity of 1024 CHANNELS (memories).
Pressing the A/B key switches between the upper (A) and lower (B) VFO. The cursor on the display indicates which VFO is active.
To modify Dual Standby settings: press MENU → SET → Radio Set → Double Wait (ON/OFF).
Note: The keypad lock does not affect the programmable buttons (SK1 and SK2) or the PTT button.
In digital mode, press the STAR (*) key to enter manual call mode, input a single call number, and then press the PTT to transmit.
You can also enter a single call number and press the MENU key for other selections.
Contacts can be selected from the MENU → CONTACTS.
The Contact List is used to store contact information. It can hold a maximum of 256 contacts. Access it by pressing MENU and selecting "Contacts".
You can MODIFY, VIEW, and DELETE each individual number and alias of a contact.
Note:
The radio can send and receive messages with a maximum length of 144 characters (or 64 characters, as indicated in some places).
You can also use the 32 pre-defined messages stored in the CODEPLUG.
The ✉️ icon on the display indicates the message status: closed (unread) or open (read).
To delete received messages: select SMS → Inbox → Delete All.
Inbox: Stores received messages (up to 20). A read message is indicated by an open envelope ?, an unread message by a closed envelope ✉️. If full, the ☒ icon will be displayed. New messages overwrite the oldest. You can reply, forward, view details, and delete messages. To delete all inbox messages, select "SMS -> Inbox -> Delete All".
Outbox: Stores sent messages (up to 16). Sent messages are always at the top. If full, no icon is displayed. New messages overwrite the oldest. You can resend, forward, edit, and delete messages. To delete all outbox messages, select "SMS -> Outbox -> Delete All".
To delete outgoing messages: select SMS → Outbox → Delete All.
The radio can store up to 10 recent CALLS, including answered and missed calls. When the log is full, it overwrites the oldest entry.
To access: press MENU and go to Call Log. From there, you can:
Scanning functions when DUAL WAITING is disabled.
To activate scanning, go to MENU and select SCAN, or press the STAR (*) key.
If "Auto Scan" is programmed, scanning activates automatically when you go to the designated channels.
When scanning is active, the LED flashes orange and the Z symbol appears on the display. Different versions of this symbol may appear depending on whether priority channels are active.
To listen to a conversation, press the MONI key.
To stop scanning, press the STAR (*) key again.
A SCAN LIST can be created for each CHANNEL via CPS. This radio supports up to 16 Scan Lists, and each scan list can contain up to 16 CHANNELS (both analog and digital).
To select scan lists, go to Scan → Scan List in the menu.
This is similar to Promiscuous Mode, where the radio monitors when the frequency, slot, and color code are set in the same configuration, regardless of the contact and RX Group.
It can be activated by setting the MONITOR button in the CPS.
Use the Monitor function to adjust the reception signal.
Press and hold the "Monitor" shortcut to activate this function. The ? icon will appear on the display. Release the key to exit.
You can designate whether the current channel (or any channel) is a priority channel. Each SCAN LIST can have up to 2 priority channels set.
In analog mode, press MENU → Set → Radio Set → CTCSS. Press the STAR (*) key to enable sub-tone CTCSS search.
Pressing the HASH (#) key switches between low power (1 Watt) and high power (5 Watt). TX power can be defined for each individual channel.
In case of poor repeater coverage, you can switch to "direct" mode by pressing MENU → Set → Radio Set → Talkaround → ON.
You can adjust the squelch level based on background noise. It is normally set to "NORMAL".
This function must be stored in the codeplug. In digital mode, you can directly initiate a call to contacts.
Press MENU → Contacts, use the Up/Down arrow keys (▲/▼) to select the contact, select "Call prompt", and press the MENU key to initiate the call. If successful, "Call prompt success full" will appear; otherwise, "failed".
After receiving a call prompt command, a call tone will be heard. Press EXIT to dismiss it.
To view radio model, serial number, CPS version, and hardware version:
To initialize the radio to its default conditions:
With the radio OFF, press and hold Side Button 1 and Numeric Key 1. Then power on the radio. "Memory Reset?" will appear. Press the MENU button to confirm initialization. The LCD will display "Memory Reset..." and initialization will complete after 10 seconds, with the radio turning on normally. Pressing other buttons will exit the initialization interface and boot normally.
ATTENTION! The power must not be cut off during the initialization process, or initialization will fail. As stated by Radioddity, this can cause audio problems. DO NOT DO IT!
Open the RD5-R program, also known as "Program Software" (identified by a black radio icon).
Software Icon: A black radio icon with "RD-5R" text below it.
Connect the radio to the PC, power it on, and click "NEW..." in the top left.
Go to General Setting and enter your callsign and ID number in "Radio User" and "Radio ID" fields.
ATTENTION! It is very important, especially if you are using a CODEPLUG not created by you but borrowed from another amateur radio operator, to do this immediately to avoid using their callsign!
CPS Screenshot: General Setting and Contacts View
The screenshot shows the CPS interface with a tree view on the left (including "Basic Information", "Menu", "Buttons", "Text Message", "Privacy", "Signaling System", "Contact", "Rx Group List", "Zone", "Channel", "Scan", "VFO").
The main panel displays "General Setting" with fields like "Radio Name", "Radio ID", "Tx Preamble Duration", "Rx Low Battery Interval", "Monitor Type", "Program Password", "Vox Sensitivity", "Battery Saver", "Lone Worker", "Talkaround".
Another tab shows the "Contact" list with columns for "Number", "Name", "Call ID", and "Type". Example entries include "WORLDWIDE", "EUROPE", "ITALIA", "Liguria", "Piemonte", "Val d'Aosta", "Lombardia", "Repeater", "D2-ALP", "Tigullio", and individual callsigns like "IK1F", "IK1H", "OK8E". These are categorized as "Group Call" or "Private Call".
Now, you need to enter the various TGs (Talkgroups), regional groups, TACs (Tactical Channels), and your friends' contacts (with callsign and ID number) in the "Contacts" section.
ATTENTION: Remember that for TGs, etc., you select "Group Call" on the right, and for friends, you select "Private Call"!
CPS Screenshot: Channel Settings View
The screenshot shows the "Channel" configuration interface. Key settings include:
This is the most tedious part: go to CHANNELS (memories) and enter your analog and DMR repeaters one by one.
First, select whether it's an analog or digital repeater (DMR) from the top-left dropdown. Then, input the RX and TX frequencies, and optionally select the TX power and TOT.
Repeat this process for all radio repeaters you wish to store. For each ANALOG repeater, also remember to store the CTCSS sub-tone to open it!
ATTENTION: For each DIGITAL repeater, you need to create as many entries as the TGs, Regional, or TAC channels you want to use on that repeater!
And for each one, you need to correctly set these parameters on the right side:
CPS Screenshot: Digital Channel Settings Detail
This shows a zoomed-in view of the digital channel settings, emphasizing:
Therefore, each time you must choose the CONTACT (TG, Regional, or TAC) and the SLOT (1 or 2). Except in rare cases, the Color Code is generally always 1.
Now we need to create the various Zones. Click on the "Zone" option in the tree view.
CPS Screenshot: Zone Management Interface
The screenshot shows the "Zone" management window. On the left is an "Available" list of channels/groups (e.g., "IR2UDS LIG", "IR1UIQ ITA", "HOTSPOT TIGULLI"). On the right is the "Member" list for the currently selected zone (e.g., "IR1UIQ"). There are "Add" and "Delete" buttons to move items between the lists.
From the list that appears in the LEFT window, click ADD to move the desired items to the RIGHT!
Example: By clicking on a DMR Repeater, we will move the TGs or regional/TAC channels we want to use for that single repeater from the left list to the right by pressing ADD.
And so on for all the others we have created, which are found in the far left list.
If desired, we can create our own RX Group List.
CPS Screenshot: RX Group List Management Interface
Similar to Zone management, this screenshot shows the "Rx Group List" window. An "Available" list on the left contains various groups (e.g., "Liguria", "Piemonte", "Repeater", "D2-ALP", "TAC1-10"). The "Member" list on the right shows groups added to the current RX Group List (e.g., "WORLDWIDE", "EUROPE", "ITALIA"). "Add" and "Delete" buttons are used for management.
Always use the same procedure: select from the left and press ADD to put them in the list!
And we create our SCAN list in the same way:
CPS Screenshot: Scan List Management Interface
This screenshot displays the "Scan" list management window. The "Available" list on the left contains channels and repeaters (e.g., "HOTSPOT CZ", "IR1UIQ LIG", "VHF Repeaters"). The "Member" list on the right shows the channels included in the current Scan List (e.g., "IR1UIQ ITA", "IZ1MLT ITA"). "Add" and "Delete" buttons facilitate moving items between lists.
To access advanced mode: press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + 5, then type the password: DMR5R.
Firmware Update Software Screenshots:
The screenshots illustrate the "Update" software interface. It shows fields for "File" (with a "Browse" button), "Port" (with a "Refresh" button), and buttons for "Download", "Clear", "Cancel", and "About". A progress bar indicates the update status (e.g., 0%, 24%). A final screenshot shows a "Update success" message.
ATTENTION:
After updating the firmware to version v2.0.9 (May 2018), and connecting the cable to the USB port and the radio, if you encounter an error:
First, download the update file. Then, press keys 1 and 3 on the side and power on the radio. If the green LED is solid, go to the UPDATE file, but if it gives an error:
In the update folder, click on the VCREDIST 86 file. A Chinese window will open; click "presumed yes". Then click UPDATE again and put the file name v20009. It should update in a few seconds.
This might be useful: the user had a PC with Windows 10.
Programming Cable Diagram:
A diagram of the Baofeng RD-5R programming cable shows a 4-pin connector (likely 2.5mm and 3.5mm audio jacks) connecting to a USB interface. The pins are labeled 1, 2, 3, 4. The USB interface has labels: "-Data", "+Data", "-5V (GND)". This indicates a direct cable connection, different from the Baofeng UV-5R cable.
ATTENTION! The cable is DIRECT and therefore different from the Baofeng UV-5R cable.

Radioddity states that all software downloaded from www.radioddity.com is well tested and clean.
Yes, you can input the frequency directly from the keypad and move up/down with the arrow keys. You can also save everything from the radio.
Yes, it has a VFO for both analog and digital modes, like the GD-77.
You can program memories as you wish; usually, a dedicated zone is created for analog ones.
It receives one VFO at a time. You can also set up dual watch, meaning it switches automatically depending on where it receives a signal, BUT IT IS NEVER SIMULTANEOUS DUAL LISTEN.
It is a dual-band radio but naturally does not have simultaneous reception.
Yes, but here it is called Digital Monitor Mode.
Some users complain that they cannot get it to work with their hotspots:
The RD-5R functions well; it can receive and transmit, but it does not activate the user's hotspot. The radio transmits, as it can be heard on another DMR radio, but it cannot register on any of the user's hotspots. The codeplug has been checked many times, and everything is verified.
Timeslot and Colorcode are programmed correctly, and the DMR ID is the same on both the hotspot and the radio. All other DMR radios work fine, but the RD-5R does not.
It should work. Hundreds of radios and 6 different types of hotspots have been programmed. The conclusion is that the firmware update and reset damaged the main program. There is obviously a bug in that firmware area.
If you haven't updated or reset your device, it should work fine on DMR. Have you reset or updated your device?
The user updated the firmware, but it performed a reset before doing so. This is something done with all radios during firmware updates. At that point, the user was unaware that a reset would be harmful.
Under the channel settings, you should deselect "Dual Capacity Mode". This has resolved similar issues for others.
After this, it works great with a Bluestack DVmega.
CPS Screenshot: Repeater Slot Setting
This screenshot highlights the "Repeater Slot" setting in the CPS, showing it set to "2". Other digital settings like Privacy, Privacy Group, Rx Group List, and Color Code are also visible.
The Baofeng RD-5R works with Jumbospot hotspots.
