General Information
1. On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) II
The On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) II system is a second generation of diagnostic regulations designed to monitor emission control systems and key engine components. It performs tests to detect problems, and when a problem is detected, it turns on a warning lamp (MIL) on the vehicle instrument panel, typically displaying "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon".
Using the Scan Tool
1. Auto Diagnostic Scanner Overview
The scan tool features an OBD II CONNECTOR (1) to connect to the vehicle's Data Link Connector (DLC). It has an ENTER BUTTON (2) to confirm selections, an EXIT BUTTON (3) to cancel or return to menus, UP SCROLL BUTTON (4) and DOWN SCROLL BUTTON (5) for menu navigation, and an "I/M" BUTTON (6) for quick emissions readiness checks.
2. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
OBD II Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are stored by the vehicle's onboard computer to identify specific problems. DTCs are typically five-digit alphanumeric codes. The first character indicates the control system (P for Powertrain, B for Body, C for Chassis, U for Network). The subsequent characters provide more detail about the code's origin and the conditions under which it was set.
Diagram Description: An example DTC structure is shown, illustrating the alphanumeric code (e.g., P0520) and the breakdown of its components.
3. Location of the Data Link Connector (DLC)
The DLC is a standardized 16-pin connector used for scan tool interface. It is typically located within 300mm from the center of the instrument panel (dash), often under or around the driver's side. A label may indicate its location. For some vehicles, it might be behind the ashtray. Refer to the vehicle's service manual if the DLC cannot be found.
Diagram Description: Typical DLC locations are illustrated, including near the center of the dash, behind the ashtray, and on the left corner of the dash.
I/M Readiness
The I/M Readiness function tests Misfire monitor, Fuel system monitor, and Comprehensive component monitor. Status indicators include N/A (not available), INC (incomplete or not ready), and OK (completed or monitor OK).

DTC Lookup
This function searches for definitions of codes stored in the built-in library. From the Main Menu, select "Code Lookup" and press ENTER. Input the DTC (e.g., P0000). Use the UP/DOWN buttons to move the cursor and ENTER to confirm. For manufacturer-specific codes, select the vehicle make. If a definition is not found, a message will appear, and you should refer to the vehicle's service manual. Press EXIT to return to the Main Menu.
Review
This function allows you to review recorded DTCs. Select "Review" from the Main Menu and press ENTER. The screen will display the recorded DTCs.
Tool Setup
The scan tool allows adjustments and settings for:
- Language selection.
- Unit of Measure (Imperial or Metric).
- Beep Set (ON/OFF).
- Record function (ON/OFF).
- Feedback.
Review & Print Diagnostic Reports
To review and print reports: Connect the device to a computer via USB. Download upgrade files from the Autophix website (www.autophix.com). Install the upgrade driver. Open the "update" application and click "Review & print" to save or print reports.
About
The "About" section displays tool information, including Software Version, Hardware Version, Serial Number, and supported protocols like OBD-II/EOBD, Data Stream, Freeze Frame, and O2 Sensor Test.
OBD II Diagnostics
CAUTION: Do not connect or disconnect test equipment with the ignition ON or engine running.
- Turn the ignition OFF.
- Locate the vehicle's 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC).
- Plug the scan tool cable connector into the vehicle's DLC.
- Turn the ignition ON (engine can be off or running).
- Press ENTER to enter the Main Menu. Use UP/DOWN buttons to select diagnostics.
- Press ENTER to confirm.
If a "LINKING ERROR!" message appears, verify ignition is ON, check DLC connection security, turn ignition OFF for 10 seconds, then ON again and repeat the procedure.
1. Read Codes
Select "Read Codes" from the Diagnostic Menu and press ENTER. The screen will display any detected codes. Use UP/DOWN to select items and ENTER to confirm. Press EXIT to return to the previous menu.
2. Erase Codes
Select "Erase Codes" and press ENTER. A confirmation prompt will appear: "Clear/Reset Emission-Related Diagnostic Information, Are you sure?". Press ENTER to proceed (requires ignition ON with engine OFF). After processing, a confirmation message will display. Note: Erasing a fault code does not correct the fault; consult a qualified automotive specialist.
I/M Readiness
This function tests Misfire monitor, Fuel system monitor, and Comprehensive component monitor. Status indicators are N/A (not available), INC (incomplete or not ready), and OK (completed or monitor OK).
Data Stream
Select "Data Stream" from the Main Menu and press ENTER. You can "View All Items", "Select Items", or "View Graphic Items". Use UP/DOWN buttons to navigate pages. Press ENTER to select items. Press ENTER and UP/DOWN to move between pages. Press EXIT to return to the Datastream display. You can view live data with a graph (max 3 lines). Press ENTER on an abbreviation to see its meaning.
View Freeze Frame
When an emission-related fault occurs, a snapshot of current vehicle parameters is recorded by the ECU. If DTCs were erased, Freeze Data may not be stored. Select "Freeze Frame" from the Main Menu to view the DTC that caused the storage and related parameters like Fuel system status, Calculated LOAD Value, and Engine Coolant Temperature.
02 Sensor Test
OBD II regulations require monitoring and testing of oxygen (O2) sensors. This function retrieves and displays O2 sensor monitor test results for the most recently performed tests. This function may not be supported by vehicles using a Controller Area Network (CAN). For CAN-equipped vehicles, refer to the "On-Board Monitor Test" section.
On-board Monitor Test
This function reads the results of on-board diagnostic monitoring and tests for specific components/systems. Select "On-board Monitoring" from the Diagnostic Menu and press ENTER. The screen displays test results, component IDs, limits, and status (Pass/Fail).
EVAP System Test
The EVAP test function initiates a leak test for the vehicle's EVAP system. The scanner signals the vehicle's computer to start the test. Refer to the vehicle's service repair manual for necessary procedures. If the car does not support this function, a message will display.
Vehicle Info
Select "Vehicle Info" to display information such as VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), CID (Calibration ID), and CVN (Calibration Verification Number). Press EXIT to return to the Diagnostic Menu.
